Efficacy of Beauveria bassiana Against Eurygaster integriceps: A Time-Dependent Analysis

The virulence of Beauveria bassiana to overwintering Sunn pest adults was determined in the laboratory using micro-application techniques. Five microliter of 2 × 103, 2 × 104, 2 × 105, 2 × 106, 1 × 107, 2 × 107, 1 × 108 conidia/ml-1 were used in November, January and March. Applications were made to the mesosternum of adults. Mortality was recorded every 2 days for 16 days. Isolates were efficacious to Sunn pest at the higher concentrations. The cumulative corrected mortality after 12 days varied from 2.3% (SPT22) at 2×103 conidia/ml-1, when treatment was conducted in November, to 100% (SPSR2) at 1×108 conidia/ml-1 in March. The LC50 for SPSR2 decreased from 1.1×107 to 3.7×103 conidia/ ml-1 when treatment was conducted in November and March, respectively. The 50% lethal time (LT50) varied from 17.07 days for GHA (the commercial fungal isolate – in BotaniGard), to 9.31 days for SPSR2 in November. The most efficacious isolate was SPSR2.

Temporal Dynamics of Malaria Incidence and Vector Diversity in Northern Namibia

The prevalence of malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum and the abundance of malaria vector species were studied in selected areas of northern Namibia during the wet and the dry seasons. Female mosquitoes were collected using exit window traps. Blood smears were prepared and body temperatures recorded from suspected malaria patients in order to determine the prevalence of malaria parasites and confirm clinical malaria through microscopic examination. The study revealed that Anopheles (Cellia) arabiensis was the most common (84.4%) of the malaria vector species collected. Other vector species included Anopheles funestus (5.0%) and non-malaria vector species (10.6%). Anopheles (Cellia) arabiensis were more prevalent and significantly more abundant during the wet (85.1%) than the dry (14.9%) season. The opposite was true for A. funestus (35.1% in the wet and 64.9% in the dry season). There was no significant difference between the number of patients diagnosed with malaria and those with no malaria during the wet and the dry seasons (c2 = 0.55, df = 1, P>0.05). Furthermore, 72.1% of patients with fever tested negative for P. falciparum when clinical diagnosis was employed. Results reveal that diagnosis of malaria using fever is inaccurate compared to microscopic examination of blood smears. This leads to over-diagnosis of the prevalence of malaria and consequent wastage of malaria drugs on patients who do not have clinical malaria. The use of microscopic examination should therefore be promoted to improve diagnosis of malaria and hence facilitate treatment of patients with malaria.

Exploring Camptothlipsis Enderlein (Braconidae: Agathidinae) in Saudi Arabia: Description of a New Species and Distribution Records

This paper gives a detailed description of Camptothlipsis arabica sp. nov., (Hym., Braconidae, Agathidinae) is described in Saudi Arabia. The diagnostic morphological characters of the new species are outlined and they are compared with those of the related species. This paper is the first report given of the genus Camptothlipsis Enderlein in Saudi Arabia.

Impact of Soybean Trichome Traits on Egg-Laying Preferences of Etiella zinckenella in Indonesian Agriculture

Study of oviposition behavior of Etiella zinckenella Treitschke on several Indonesian local cultivars of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill was conducted with multiple choice and no choice tests. This study confirmed that sequence of eggs oviposition of E. zinckenella on tropical region does not differ with other results on non-tropical region. Total number of egg deposited and oviposition frequency of E. zinckenella do not correlate with trichome density, trichome length and pod surface when they do not have a choice of host plants. On the contrary, on the condition of many host plants to choose, E. zinckenella prefers to deposit eggs on the cultivar with many short trichomes. The preference test based on soybean phenology showed that the E. zinckenella prefers R4 stage (fully filled pod) for oviposition.

Evaluating the Impact of Benzimidazole Compounds on Microsporidial Infection in Bombyx mori L., Specifically Lamerin Breed

Six benzimidazole derivatives viz., Metronidazole, Albendazole, Tinidazole, Ornidazole, Mebendazole and Satinidazole at three concentrations (0.25, 0.50 and 1.00%) were screened against microsporidiosis of Lamerin breed of the silkworm, Bombyx mori in vitro and in vivo. All drugs were found significantly effective in minimizing the microsporidiosis. Further more, mebendazole were found more effective at all concentrations and emerged as the most efficient and promising drug for minimizing the microsporidiosis to the significant extent in Lamerin breed of the silkworm, B mori.

Evaluating the Prevalence of Intestinal Helminths in Guinea Worm-Controlled Regions of Ogun State, Nigeria

The public health concern for intestinal helminthes emphasizes the need for assessment to reduce the burden of diseases. The study which was conducted from July 2008 to February 2009 evaluates the impact of health education on the prevalence of intestinal helminthes. Stool samples from 93 males and 125 females (5 years of age and above) were collected aseptically from respondents in guinea worm-controlled communities of Abata, Ikija, Kooku, Ogboye and Agbugburu in Odeda Local Government area of Ogun State. Stools were examined using Kato-Katz technique, and structured questionnaires used to elicit knowledge and perception of the parasites. Results revealed that 34 (15.6%) of the 218 persons examined were infected with intestinal helminths. Ascaris lumbricoides was observed to be more prevalent with 21 out of 218 persons examined were infected (9.63%), followed by hookworm which was found in 9 out of 218 (4.13%) and Trichuris trichiura which was found in 4 out of 218 people examined (1.84%); though with no significant differences (p>0.05) in the prevalence of helminth parasites. Females (10.4%) were more infected than males (8.6%), but no significant difference in infection status with respect to sex (p>0.05). Infections were high in age group 5-19 years, but decreased with increasing age level with no significant differences in the prevalence at p>0.05. Evaluation of respondents’ knowledge revealed that most (90.4%) are aware of intestinal parasites. Results also showed that previous health education had significant effect on the prevalence level of helminthes observed. There is the need for more health measures that will be directed at the community level in terms of free health periodical/ drug administration against parasitic diseases.
