Spatio-tempora variation in cassava (MANIHOT sp.) in forest savannah eco-climatic zone of Nigeria

Abstract
Multi-locational trials were conducted in four selected locations with the forest-savannah agro-ecological zone of Nigeria to investigate the spatial variability in the yield of cassava. In an attempt to compare the yield of cassava within the forest-savannah eco-climatic zone of Nigeria, four locations including Ibadan, Abeokuta, Akure and Oshogbo were selected for field trials. Four improved cassava cultivation (TMS 30572, TMS 91934, TMS 50395 and TMS 30555) were grown between 2009 and 2010 in these locations and harvested at 12 months after planting. Results obtained showed that there were significant differences in the yield of cassava in the four selected locations with Ibadan having the highest tuberous root per hectare among the four locations. TMS 30572 had the highest (52,964 t. ha-1) number of tuberous root per hectare among the four varieties of cassava planted. This study revealed that cassava yield decreased with increase in rainfall distribution in the forest-savannah agro-ecological zone of Nigeria.

Influence of plant spacing, seed rhizome size and cultivars on the incidence of rhizome rot and wilt disease complex of ginger

Abstract
Rhizome rot and wilt disease complex is the important production constraints of ginger cultivation in hill agro-ecological region of West Bengal. In the present study, attempt have been made to manage the problem by adjusting plant spacing, seed rhizome size and as well as by selection of suitable cultivars available in the region. Plant spacing of 25 × 30 cm was found to be optimum for better crop return and lower disease incidence. Considering both lower percentage disease incidence and higher yield, seed rhizome size of 50 to 75 g was found to be optimum for ginger planting. Mother rhizome extraction/removal that is, the common practice followed by ginger growers in the region had an additive effect on incidence of rhizome rot and wilt disease complex of ginger. None of the locally available germplasm tested was found to be tolerant against rhizome rot and wilt disease complex of ginger, however, cultivar “Majauley” may be considered as moderately susceptible and “Bhaisey” and “Gorubathaney” are considered as highly susceptible germplasm.

Participatory characterization and evaluation of some African leafy vegetables in Lari, Kiambu West District, Central Kenya

Abstract
Production and consumption of African leafy vegetables (ALVs) is generally low in Central Kenya, yet micronutrient and vitamin malnutrition in some parts is high particularly among young children and women in childbearing age. This work was conducted in Lari division, Kiambu West district and its objective was to participatorily characterize and evaluate selected ALVs with small-scale farmers. A total of 31 accessions of spiderplants (Cleome gynandra), amaranths (Amaranthus spp.) and African nightshades (Solanum spp.) were participatorily characterized by four farmer groups comprising over 80 members. The following traits were evaluated: Number of leaves per plant, leaf colour, branches/plant and organoleptic test. Most farmers preferred highly leafed and branched genotypes with dark green leaves. In organoleptic test, there was a wide variation among all accessions evaluated.

Characterization of Ethiopian mustard lines for vegetative agromorphological traits at Arusha, Tanzania

Abstract
This study was conducted at Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center, Regional Center for Africa ((AVRDC - RCA), Madiira Experimental Research Station in Arusha, Tanzania in 2005. The objective of the study was to document vegetative agromophological traits in the Ethiopian mustard lines held at AVRDC – RCA in order to identify lines with useful traits that can be used as genitors for active breeding; and to rationalize the conservation of this species. Forty-seven lines of Ethiopian mustard were characterized for vegetative agromophological traits. Significant differences (P 0.05) were observed in most quantitative traits with eighty eight percent of the accessions flowering after 84 days from sowing. Among the qualitative traits, great variation was seen in leaf number/plant, leaf bloom and leaf blade blistering. There was a strongly negative significant correlation between days to 50% flowering and plant height with tall plants flowering early. There was a positive non-significant correlation between days to 50% flowering and leaf dimensions. There was a significant negative correlation between days to 50% flowering and leaves per plant with plants with many leaves flowering early. There was a positive non-significant correlation between leaf dimensions and leaves per plant. Results from diversity dendrogram showed two main clusters with three sub-clusters showing intra-species diversity. These preliminary results indicate that there is a wide variation in Ethiopian mustard collection held at AVRDC-RCA based on vegetative agromorphological traits. Further work should consider agromorphological characterization at reproductive phase or molecular characterization in order to get a clearer picture of this diversity.

Effect of pre-harvest treatments on the cellulase activity and quality of ber fruit under cold storage conditions

Abstract
Studies were carried out to find out the effect of various pre-harvest treatments: CaCl2 (@ 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0%), Ca (NO3)2 (@0.5, 1.0 and 2.0%), GA3 (@ 20, 40 and 60 ppm) and Bavistin (@ 0.1%) on the cellulase activity and quality of 'Umran' ber fruits during cold storage. Marked trees were sprayed at colour break stage with the test chemicals. Fruits were packed in CFB boxes and placed in cold storage (3 - 5°C and 85 - 90% RH) for 30 days. The fruits were evaluated after 10, 20 and 30 days interval for various parameters such as cellulase activity, phenolic content, palatability rating and rotting percentage. Cellulase activity registered a gradual increase up-to 20 days of storage thereafter a decline was noted in all the treatments. The palatability rating increased up to 10 days of storage in all the treatments, except control but subsequently it decreased with longer in storage periods. Among the various pre-harvest treatments CaCl2 (2%) recorded minimum cellulase activity and rotting percentage and registered high palatability rating and phenolics content during cold storage conditions. Studies showed that pre-harvest application of CaCl2 (2%) maintained very good fruit quality and prolonged shelf-life for 20 days under cold storage conditions.

Effect of Agrobacterium culture and inoculation density on transformation efficiency of a citrange (Citrus reticulata x Poncirus trifoliata)

Abstract
This study focused on the effect of two factors, initial culture density and subsequent inoculation density on the transformation efficiency of citrus rootstock US-812 (Citrus reticulata x Poncirus trifoliata) epicotyl explants. In the first experiment, Agrobacterium EHA105 containing pBINGUSint was grown in YEP medium to an OD600 of 1 and glycerol stocks made and stored at -80°C. The three factors incubation time (18 to 24 hours), glycerol stock dilution (1/10, 1/100, 1/1000), and temperature (26 or 28°C) were simultaneously varied and a response surface for OD600 was generated for culture density in baffled and unbaffled flasks. The resulting polynomial models for both flask types were highly significant with R2 values of 0.98; this means that the polynomial model can be used to specify the stock dilution, temperature, and flask type to achieve a target density in a given amount of time (accurate from 18 to 24 h). In a second set of experiments, transformation efficiency of juvenile epicotyl explants was assessed from treatments in a 2x2 factorial arrangement of Agrobacterium culture OD 600 (0.1 or 1) and inoculation density OD600 (0.1 or 1) using the GUS reporter gene. The polynomial model developed in the first experiment was used to determine the conditions to achieve each factorial treatment combination. No significant differences in main or interactive effects were detected.
