Educational investments: A key to alleviating poverty and ensuring food security in Nigeria

Abstract

Education is key to a bright future for all global citizens. Many developing countries are severely challenged by a vicious cycle of food insecurity, poverty and under-education. The route out of this so-called poverty trap lies in multiple strategies for poverty reduction, whereby interconnected problems are tackled simultaneously. Promoting access to relevant, sound foundation education is a good place to start. This is because more than 70 percent of the world’s poor are found in rural areas where hunger, literacy and low school achievement are common. Education for a large number of people in rural areas is crucial for achieving sustainable food security, poverty reduction and rural development. Poverty education strategies that emphasize skills acquisition, especially, agricultural skills need be put in place for rural and urban dwellers targeting children, youths and adults alike. This paper thus argues that increased investment in education is critical for speeding up improvements in food security. Education in rural and urban areas, improves farmers^, ability to implement more advanced technologies and techniques for crop management. Education also improves rural residents’ ability to find more profitable off-farm employment, boosting household income. Sound foundation education, especially in Nigeria should be relevant to the local context, focus on learners, needs and use agricultural and environmental experiences. This form of education is crucial for meeting with our rapidly changing technologies and increasing globalization necessary for sustainable livelihoods and rural economy competitiveness.

Promoting cultural literacy in the EFL classroom

Abstract

"To teach a foreign language is to teach a foreign culture". In my opinion, it is really bewildering how teachers can teach what they do not know. Accordingly, this study comes to lay a solid foundation for sssthe EFL teachers through empowering them and introducing them to the basic principles of promoting cultural literacy in the EFL classroom. In addition, it will be an indispensable contribution to enrich the cultural literacy bibliography which is limited. In this study, the researcher familiarizes the EFL teachers with cultural literacy and, simultaneously, sets the American Access Microscholarship Program as a model of cultural literacy promoting program in the EFL classroom. What's more, pivotal terms like cultural literacy, Amideast, Access Microscholarship Program will be clarified in detail. The researcher concludes his paper recommending those in charge to adopt this new philosophy in teaching English Language as a foreign language and consider the basic prerequisites in advance.

Abstract

This article presents a prescriptive curriculum design for a new masters of Arts program in international studies with a concentration in international security and a specialization in international terrorism for an international studies MA program. Picking up from an earlier empirical study that conducted and analyzed an extensive needs assessment, this work offers detailed recommendations for curriculum, instruction, assessment, and program evaluation aspects of this graduate program. Likewise, this paper features course descriptions, recommended textbooks and other requirements for this course of study. Reflecting on this effort to establish a serious graduate program in international studies, this research asserts a significant program of study and provides a rich proposal for those seeking to inaugurate a similar effort.
