The effect of nitrogen levels on forage yield and some attributes in some hybrid corn (Zea mays indentata Sturt.) cultivars sown as second crop for silage corn

Abstract 

This study was carried out to determine the effect of four nitrogen levels on forage yield and some attributes three corn cultivars under irrigated conditions in Mustafakemalpasa, Bursa, Turkey in 2005 and 2006. The field experiments were set up according to randomized complete block experimental design with three replications. Three varieties were used (LG 2687, PR34N43 and H 2547) and four rates of nitrogen (0, 150, 300 and 450 kg ha-1) were applied. The plant height, first ear height, stem diameter, the number of leaf and ear per plant, ear percentage in green herbage, forage yield and dry matter yield were determined. The effects of different nitrogen levels were not significant on all attributes, except forage and dry matter yield. It was determined that 300 kg N ha-1 was suitable for high forage and dry matter yield. The forage yields of cultivar were obtained between 81457 and 92913 kg ha-1.

Constraints to the delivery of clean seed yams in the lowland sub-humid tropics of Nigeria: The supply chain approach

Abstract

An investigation into the seed yam supply chain was carried out to identify the components of commercial seed yam supply systems, which affect the supply of clean seed yams by smallholder farmers in Nigeria. Up to 108 respondents were used to generate data for the analysis. Data were analyzed using simple descriptive statistics. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to capture the mean ratings across the supply chain, while the Z – statistic was used to test for factors that influence seed yam traders’ marketing strategies and extent of performance of marketing functions in the delivery of clean seed yams to farmers. The results of the analysis identified seed yam producers, collector agents (sometimes called yam traders or yam dealers), wholesalers and retailers as the main actors in seed yam supply within and outside the lowland belt of River Niger in Nigeria. The collector agents act as cartel and occupy a central position in the entire supply chain process. They act as intermediaries between farmers and wholesalers especially where farmer groups do not exist and provide a major distribution network or market linkage for the marketing of the seed yams. The study identified pests attack and disease infestation (24.0%), physical injury on the seed yams (65.1%), poor knowledge of seed multiplication techniques (39.4%) short shelf life of the tubers (33.2%), activities of cartels, deplorable road and poor proximity to market (45.5%) as the factors that affect consumer preference and efficient delivery network in the seed yam supply chain. The research also identified poor business practices including sharp practices, lack of trust and confidence amongst major actors (wholesalers and retailers), insufficient working capital (76.3%), amongst others as the factors militating against efficient seed yam supply chain.

Spatial rooting patterns of gliricidia, pigeon pea and maize intercrops and effect on profile soil N and P distribution in southern Malawi

Abstract 

The concept of competition or complementarity between tree and crop roots for below ground resources have been a major debate in simultaneous systems. Root studies were conducted in three cropping systems, namely: sole maize, pigeon pea/maize intercropping and Gliricidia sepium (Gliricidia)/maize intercropping, with the objective of understanding the potential for competition or otherwise. Pigeon pea and maize root development was monitored at 21, 42 and 63 days after planting (DAP) . Also soil mineral N and Olsen P were assessed along the soil profile up to 200 cm depth. Maize roots developed faster than those of pigeon pea during the first 42 days after planting and there was little overlapping of maize and pigeon pea roots. However, the roots of both pigeon pea and maize had its peaks at 63 DAP, suggesting potential competition during reproductive growth stage of maize. In Gliricidia/maize intercropping, maize had the highest root density averaging 1.02 cm cm-3 in the top 0 -4 0 cm soil layer, whereas gliricidia had lower root length density (0.38 cm cm-3) in the top 0 - 40 cm soil layer compared to 0.65 cm cm-3 in the subsoil (40 - 100 cm) . In Gliricidia/maize intercropping, mineral N was increased by 34 - 44 kg ha-1 in the 0 - 100 cm soil layer, whereas Olsen P decreased by 32 kg ha-1 in the entire 0-200 cm soil profile compared to the sole maize plot. Pigeon pea may be the “loser” in an association that involved both maize and Gliricidia. Because maize had more roots growing within 0 - 40 cm soil layer than Gliricidia it is able to take advantage of the nutrients from the applied Gliricidia prunings in the ridges. The study confirmed root compatibility between Gliricidia and maize and nutrient pumping from deep soil layers.

Yields and qualities of some red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) genotypes in crop improvement systems as livestock feed

Abstract

The objective of this study was to compare twenty-five genotypes of red clover ( Trifolium pratense L.) in terms of yield (in 2000 - 2004) and quality performance (in 2000 - 2001) for animal feeding. The genotypes were evaluated for dry matter yield (DMY), crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), digestible dry matter (DDM), dry matter intake (DMI), relative feed value (RFV), total digestible nutrients (TDN), net energy-lactation (NEl), net energy-maintenance (NEm) and net energy-gain (NEg) content. There were significant differences in DMY (P < 0.01), CP, ADF, NDF, DDM, DMI, RFV (P < 0.05), TDN, NEl, NEm and NEg (P < 0.01) amongst the genotypes. The Rajah cultivar had the highest DMY (13629 kg ha-1) amongst the genotypes according to five year results. While the highest CP (15.94%), NDF (50.59%), DDM (68.68%), TDN (66.50%), NEl (0.70 Mcal/1b), NEm (0.76 Mcal/1b) and NEg (0.44 Mcal/1b) were determined in the L-818 line, the lowest ADF (25.96%) was also found in the L-818 line. The highest DMI (3.16%) was observed in the Hamua cultivar. The highest RFV was determined in the Tohum Islah ecotype (156), the Hamua (155), the Orbit (154) cultivars and the L-812 (154) line. Our results showed that there were large variations in terms of yield and quality performances amongst the red clover genotypes for animal feeding. The Rajah, L- 832 (selected from wild forms) and Pawera had the highest yields amongst the genotypes. The L -818, L-812 lines (selected from wild forms), Tohum Islah ecotype, Lucrun and Redwent cultivars were superior in terms of forage quality properties (low in ADF and NDF and high CP, DDM, DMI, RFV, TDN, NEl, NEm, NEg) than the other red clover genotypes.

Effects of low input tillage and amaranth intercropping system on growth and yield of maize (Zea mays)

Abstract

Field experiments were conducted to find out the effects of tillage practices and intercropping on the growth and yield of maize at the teaching and research farm, university of Ado Ekiti, southwest Nigeria during the 2006 early and late growing seasons. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replication with tillage practices (CT, MT, NT) assigned to main plots and cropping systems to subplots. At 8 WAP, the tallest plants of 134 cm were got with CT and sole cropping while the shortest plant, about 84 cm, was obtained from NT and intercropping. Application of CT and solecropping also had the widest leaf of 451cm 2 per plant while a leaf about 231 cm 2 was obtained from NT and intercropping. The same trend was obtained for the number of leaves per plant with CT and solecropping having the highest 11 leaves per plant. Land equivalent ratio was greater than unity in all treatments during both seasons. Aggressivity was negative for CT and MT and positive for NT while relative crowding coefficient was positive for all treatments. Maize grain yield was significantly highest, about 3 tonsha-1, under CT and solecropping while the least yield, 2.12 tonsha-1, was obtained from NT and intercropping. The results indicated that maize growth, intercropping efficiency and yield were well supported with CT.

Comparison of biogas productivity of cassava peels mixed in selected ratios with major livestock waste types

Abstract

Biogas productivity of cassava peels, mixed with poultry, piggery and cattle waste types in ratios 1:1, 2:1, 3:1 and 4:1 by mass, was investigated using 12 Nos. 220l batch type anaerobic digesters in a 3 x 4 factorial experiment using a retention period of 30 days and within the mesophilic temperature range. Biogas yield was significantly (P 0.05) influenced by the different mixing ratios of livestock waste with cassava peels. The cumulative average biogas yield from digested cassava peels was 0.6 l/kg- TS. The average cumulative biogas yield increased to 13.7, 12.3, 10.4 and 9.0 l/kg- TS respectively for 1:1, 2:1, 3:1 and 4:1 mixing ratios when cassava peel was mixed with poultry waste. On mixing with piggery waste, the average cumulative biogas yield increased to 35.0, 26.5, 17.1 and 9.3 l/kg-TS respectively for 1:1, 2:1, 3:1 and 4:1 mixing ratios. In the case of mixing with cattle waste, the average cumulative biogas yield increased to 21.3, 19.5, 15.8 and 11.2 l/kg-TS respectively for 1:1, 2:1, 3:1 and 4:1 mixing ratios. Results show that for all livestock waste types, mixing with peels in the ratio 1:1 by mass produced the highest biogas volumes, and highest in piggery waste.
