Historical Perspectives on Missionary Activity in Bakunduland, Cameroon (1873-1960)

Abstract

This paper is a historical analysis of Missionary activities in Bakunduland in the southwest region of Cameroon in the 18th and 19th Centuries. These activities such as Christian proselytization, Western education, health care took place in a context of opposition from the Bakundu local population. This opposition can be explained as a from of resistance to what was perceived by Western colonists and missionary officials as a civilizing mission, and by the same token considered traditional culture of the Bakundu inferior. As a result of these missionary activities, the Bakundu society was transformed. But this transformation was never complete for as the paper highlights, there is a blend of Western and African cultures expressed in syncretism, a situation that still prevails among the Bakundu.

Abstract

This article discusses the place of the intellectual in the modern world, and makes reflections about the situation of the impoverishment of intellectual venues, in the information society, as a sign of the decadence of this critical potentiall, discussing with the conception and main conncepts of the Critical Theory, the ways to social emancipation.

Abstract

In the darkest hours of the history the nature endowed the sub-Continent with a man who lit his life for the illumination of each and every corner of the continent and rendered meritorious services for the amelioration of his fellow men irrespective of social, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds. The light and glitter of his archetype humanitarianism was not limited to the frontiers of sub-Continent rather it reached to the farthest horizons of the world to equally facilitate his brothers and sisters who were groaning hard under the discriminatory legislation of the South African authorities. The main objective of his life was to undo the injustices committed by the unbridled powers of the imperialists and put in order the indigenous society by weeding out all the invidious evils which had made life hellish for some segments of the society. That is what he did for turning the lot of the Untouchables of the hard-core Hindu society.
