Abstract

This paper examines the problems associated with the application of management theories and philosophies in Nigeria. Historical and descriptive research methods were used, using secondary sources of information. The study found that challenges impeding the application of management theories and philosophies in Nigeria include: Lack of funds and research facilities, poor attitude and interest in research work, scanty statistics and documentation problem, intra cultural differences, the relatively few faculties and newness of management as a discipline in our academic institutions, poor linkage and collaboration between researchers and private sector among others. Based on the findings, the study recommends that on a regular basis, conferences, seminars and workshop should be organized to train stakeholders on how to weigh, and align theories of management being transferred from western nations in order to select only those that are consistent and relevant to African culture and development.

Keywords: Management theories, Management philosophies, Culture, System approach, Colonialism, Ubuntu.

Abstract

The classical dispensationalist claims the Holy Spirit activity ceased with the apostolic age. This was the major perception of the church before the end of the 4th century, during the time of Augustine and Chrysostom. A major spokesman of this view was Hyppoclytus, a contemporary of Tertullian. Proponents for the Holy Spirit such as Michael Green, boldly declared, ‘‘It is simply not the case that healing, prophecy, exorcism and speaking in tongues died out with the last apostle’.The fact that the Holy Spirit remains active in contemporary dispensation is the truth which is firmly embedded in Scriptures and unmistakable teaching of Jesus Christ. Pentecostals contend that, subsequent to conversion, but can on some occasion simultaneously, there is endowment with power with the evidence of speaking in tongues as the Holy Spirit gives utterance. This paper seeks to contribute to the interpretation of the role and function of the Holy Spirit in individuals’ Christian experience and in the corporate church. This is to help rethink the subordinate and neglected place of the Holy Spirit. Face – to-face in-depth interviews and focus group discussion were deployed for data collection. A total of 15 interviewees, 13 males (4 senior pastors) and two females (both senior pastors) were all interviewed. Thematic and interpretative analyses were used in data analysis. Findings includes the Holy Spirit baptizes believers, energizes believers for service, initiates holy living in believers, empowers believers for the great commission task and there are prerequisite for Holy Spirit baptism. It is recommended that the Holy Spirit must be given proper attention and recognition and believers must look up to Him for all things. Future studies must incorporate the historic mission churches and the Neo prophetic ministries.

Keywords: Holy Spirit, Pentecostals, Baptism.

Abstract

The paper is a critical survey of John Kekes’ perspective on the recent trends and future prospects of epistemology. The three fundamental issues in contemporary epistemology that engaged the attention of Kekes are intimately connected to justification: foundationalism, skepticism and rationality. The paper argues that Kekes’ epistemic survey of these issues is on the one hand commendable as his analysis clearly reveals a sound awareness, understanding and apprehension of the recent trends and future prospects in epistemology. On the other hand, the paper critically exposes the conceptual flaws and problems that fraught Kekes’ epistemic survey in the final analysis.

Key words: Justification, foundationalism, fallibilism, skepticism, rationality

Ricoeur’s narrative theory applied to science

Accepted 25 May, 2022

Abstract

Ricoeur’s narrative theory can be applied to scientific theories. Scientific theories as well as narrative plots represent a “synthesis of heterogeneous” based on productive imagination. On the other hand, narrative plots can be perceived as an answer to the “why?” questions as well as scientific explanations. In this paper it will be argued that an analogy between narrative and scientific paradigms can be made. In the 18th and 19th centuries, both narrative and scientific paradigms aspired to represent a mimesis of reality. However, in the 20th century, those realist aspirations were rejected or supplemented with an idea of fragmented and mind-dependent reality. This point of view opened the question of the role of non-existent (and non-referential concepts) in science. In literature, novels without traditional plots arose.

Key words: Emplotment, explanation, narrative, science, realism.

Accepted 27 April 2022

Abstract

Learning organization is a concept that is becoming an increasingly widespread philosophy in our contemporary society. It has a strong humanistic orientation, being a place where people continually expand their capacity to produce results they truly desire, where new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured and where people are continually learning how to learn together. In order to implement learning organization techniques, universities tackle some disciplines which are essential to a learning organization. Such techniques are team learning, shared vision and systematic thinking. As a result, the paper is confined to how universities are committed to creating continuous learning opportunities, encouraging collaboration and team learning, establishing systems to capture and share learning, and connecting the university organization to its environment. It also proposed the need for a radical rethinking of the core functions of the university.

Key words: Learning organizations, university, aims, techniques.

This is imperative in order to ensure the successful management of employees and also to improve productivity and achievements of an organization. One hundred and fifty-six Malaysian executives voluntarily participated in this study. The results have indicated that several dimensions of transactional and transformational leadership have positive relationship with organizational commitment but the impacts are stronger for transactional leadership style.
