Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the attitudes of primary students that study at gifted students’ school (BĐLSEM). A total of 156 primary school students participated in the research in Ankara BĐLSEM schools in 2010-2011 academic year. As data gathering tool “Environment Attitude Scale” developed by Atasoy (2005) was used in the study in the form of survey model. In data analysis phase, frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean, t test and one way variance analysis (ANOVA) were used. According to the results of the study, gifted students have positive attitudes towards environment. Another result indicated that gifted students’ attitudes towards environment showed significant differences according to “gender” and “class level” variants.

Key words: Environment, environment education, environment attitudes, gifted students.

Abstract

In this study, economic factors which are effective upon the import demand of fishery products in Turkey were studied. Import demand of fishery products in Turkey is affected by the world prices, agriculture programs and policies of the governments. Turkey’s import demand of fishery products was approached as a function of domestic prices, per capita income, lagged amount of import (t-1), exchange rate of the US dollar (USD)-Turkish lira (foreign exchange rate) and the factor of trend. Parameters were estimated with regression analysis. The study is a time series analysis and the data include the period between 1996 and 2008 and they are annual. Consequently, while the gross national product, domestic real prices, exchange rate of dollar and lagged import variable were found statistically significant among the factors that affect the analysis of Turkey’s import demand of fishery products, trend factor was not found statistically significant.

Key words: Fishery products, econometrics, import, demand, Turkey.

Abstract

Application of agrochemicals by farmers has become one of the most effective measures to pest infestation and as weed control mechanism, aimed at productivity improvement and increased farm level profits. In Ghana, though scanty, empirical evidence points to overuse of agrochemicals in vegetable production.  This paper sought to analyze the extent and factors that influence misuse of pesticides in tomato production in Akomadan. Random sample of 120 tomato farmers was used for the study. The study revealed a wide variation in the levels of pesticides usage among farmers. More than half (62%) of the farmers overused pesticides. Again 76% of the farmers did not follow dosage recommendation on labels. Using logistic regression model, the study revealed that factors such as the use of non-hybrid variety of tomato, age, education, farm size, farming experience, source of seed, farming system practiced and other economic activities of the farmer explained farmers’ pesticides over application patterns. We recommend that environmental protection agency and its allied institutions responsible for agrochemical regulation should intensify education on and monitoring of pesticides application among farmers to avoid possible table food poisoning, protect public health and environment and to avoid insect pests resistance to pesticides.

Keywords: Ghana, misuse, pesticides, tomatoes, logit analysis.

Abstract

The study focuses on the analysis of socio-economic factors that influence the adoption of improved maize varieties among farmers. The specific objectives are to identify the available new maize varieties in the study area, sources of information on new maize varieties, determine the extent to which the farmers are aware of the improved maize varieties, the influence of socio-economic characteristics of the farmers on adoption of improved maize varieties and to identify the problems confronting farmers’ adoption of new maize varieties. Data was obtained from fifty (50) maize farmers through the use of structured questionnaires. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. It was found that more than half of the respondents (sixty percent) were aware of the improved maize varieties and have been using them, while fifty four percent of the respondents got their information from extension agents. All the respondents (100%) were aware of the improved maize varieties. The results of the regression analysis showed that household size, level of education, contact with extension agents, and access to credit and yield of the improved maize varieties were the factors that influence the adoption of improved maize varieties. The major constraints identified were high cost of fertilizer and cost of labour, lack of capital, lack of contact with extension agents and lack of market for produce. It is recommended that cost of fertilizer should be subsidized, efforts should be made to make credit accessible to farmers, and there should be increased number of extension agents who would help introduce new maize varieties to farmers and an effective input supply system that would sustain the expansion of maize output by farmers in the study area should be put in place.

Key words: Improved maize varieties, regression analysis, socio-economic factors, Nigeria.

Abstract

In order to measure the effects of the monetary union on the intra zone trade, the study call on, a structural VAR, to which is associated the method of space state model assessment with the aim of distinguishing the impact of an economic policy shock in a group of country in open economy. The sample is constituted in this particular case of the 12 countries of the zone franc; seven countries of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) zone and five countries of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) zone. The results of the investigations show a sensitive reduction of the effects borders, an improvement of the institutional effects as well as the effects bound to the distance on the flux of the intra zone trade. On the other hand, the study by structural VAR and Kalman filter shows a relative symmetry of shocks observed in the real shocks of demand while the shocks of price and supply rather present an asymmetric character.

Key words: Structural VAR model, optimal currency area, shocks symmetry, Kalman filter.

Abstract

Most sub-Saharan African leaders seem to misunderstand the development concepts or ideas by embracing the African socialist system as a path of economic development. The leaders focused on strong nationalist sentiments and economy of affection and neglected the rural development, a sine qua none condition of economic growth and development in Africa. This study defines the development concepts and different economic systems, analyzes the relationship between governance, leadership and development, describes the common characteristics of African economies, and puts forward a view on the developmental policies that might address the development challenges of the region. African policy makers should recognize the failed policies of the past and be attentive to agricultural and rural development ideas in their economic development process.

Key words: Development, economic growth, governance, leadership, agriculture, pro-poor policies.
