Lipid Profiles in Aquatic Plants of Wular Lake, a Protected Wetland in the Himalayas

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate total lipid content in 15 fresh water macrophytes belonging to four ecological groups and examining the possible variations between the studied periods. The samples were obtained from nine sites throughout the Wular lake, during March to December 2011, spelling four seasons with determinations of lipid content of the aquatic macrophytes. No gross differences in the lipid content, which in general ranged between 1 to 7.6% fresh weight, was observed in the various macrophytic species, however, with a clear pattern between seasons. Results of the investigation revealed that emergents and submergeds presented greater concentration of total lipids when compared with free floating and rooted floating macrophytes. There was a tendency to higher concentrations of total lipids in the tissues of submerged macrophytes (Ceratophyllum demersum and Potamogeton crispus) in the early autumn season (peak growth period) suggesting that this period presents better conditions to Ceratophyllum demersum and Potamogeton crispus development in the Wular lake.

Development and implementation of a fish smoking kiln system

Abstract

The design and construction of fish smoking kiln was undertaken with the aim of improving the existing fish smoking kiln. The kiln consists of metal frame made of angle iron on which the entire component was assembled. The handle controls the speed of the ventilation fan through chain and sprocket. The charcoal housing is made of perforated metal sheet to allow for proper ventilation. The kiln is operated manually by turning the handle which drives the fan to augment natural ventilation. The machine performance was evaluated using fish samples (African mud Fish) smoked to an average moisture content of 11.46% within an average time span of 5 h, and the average final weight of the dried fish was 0.9827 Kg. It was found that the fish can be kept for at least two months before showing the sign of spoilage.

Effects of copper sulfate and lead nitrate exposure on caspian sea kutum survival and behavior

Abstract

The aim of present study was to determine the LC50 value of in Caspian sea kutum. The results indicated that median lethal concentration (LC50) of Caspian sea kutum (RUTILUS FRISII KUTUM) for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h of exposure are 2.944, 2.756, 2.562 and 2.310 ppm, respectively and median lethal concentration (LC50) of lead to Caspian sea kutum (R. FRISII KUTUM) for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h of exposure as 315.841, 298.456, 281.419 and 268.065 ppm, respectively. LC50 increased with decrease in mean exposure times for both metals. Physiological responses like rapid opercular movement and frequent gulping of air was observed during the initial stages of exposure after which it became occasional. All these observations can be considered to monitor the quality of aquatic ecosystem and severity of pollution. Hence, concluded that copper is more toxic than lead for Caspian sea kutum (R. FRISII KUTUM).

Abstract

The population of people living in Nigeria has risen tremendously in recent years with its corresponding increase in demand for food. Thus, there is the need for a suitable agricultural system to meet this increasing demand and also maximize the utilization of the available limited resources without much wastage integrated fish farming offers hope in this direction. This system of farming was introduced into the country some years back, its uniqueness, lies in the fact, that it has capability of combining fish culture with live stock and crop production. Its economic benefits in the enhancement of food production and self sufficiency are thoroughly discussed. Its significance in making various types of food available all the year round as well as making farmers self reliant and occupied most time of the year sets it apart from all other systems of farming. Its ecological importance which are often overlooked by farmers i.e. manure loading, nutrient cycling and productive capacity of ponds, are critically analyzed. This ecological consideration is of paramount importance in integrated fish farming in that it allows recycling, and maximum utilization of resources without wastage. Suggestions, therefore, have been made on how integrated fish farming can be ecologically sustained.

Exploring the nutritional profile of microbial live feeds: A comprehensive overview for sustainable fish farming

Abstract

Microorganisms are good sources of nutrients in fish farming. They provide essential amino acids, protein and polysaccharides need by fish and other aquaculture species. They include bacteria, yeasts, fungi and algae. The quality of aquaculture water determines the productivity of the aquaculture and influence the microbial diversity of the aquatic system. The beneficial microbes can be feed directly as live feeds or supplemented with aquaculture feeds. In addition to rich sources protein and carbohydrates, they provide organic acids, fatty acids, growth promoting factors and some extracellular enzymes required for food digestion in the intestinal tract of fish and other aquaculture species. Environmental factors and the nutritional needs of the aquaculture determine the suitability of microbes as live feed. Viable micro-organisms are added directly to the feed or by inoculating the culture water or could be sprayed or top-dressed into basal diets. The ability of some microorganisms to mutate into pathogens, non acceptance of GMOs and over production of antimicrobial substances by some species are some of the associated problems. Despite these shortcomings, the use of beneficial microorganisms has facilitated the development of aquaculture worldwide.

Analysis of physicochemical parameters in fish ponds of Gwagwalada and Kuje Area Councils, Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria

Abstract

The levels of the physicochemical regime of two selected fish ponds in Gwagwalada and Kuje Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory were determined from July to September ( rainy season) by using standard methods and equipment. The values of physico-chemical parameters of both fish ponds in the rainy season in Gwagwalada and Kuje respectively was between 87.75 ± 7.26 to185 ± 7.43ppm, for total alkalinity, 0.78 ± 0.44mg/L to4.06 ± 0.43 mg/L for BOD, 58.75 ± 7.81µs/cm and 262.23 ± 53.90µs/cm for conductivity, 7.13 ± 1.10 mg/L to 8.50 ± 0.23 mg/L for DO, 7.74 ± 1.03 to 9.02 ± 1.06 for pH, 24.5 ± 1.41 to 28 ± 0.70oC for temperature and 2.15 ± 0.49 m to 4.45 ± 0.46m for turbidity. There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in the levels of physico-chemical parameters between the fish ponds in Gwagwalada and Kuje. Fish pond A Kuje had the highest fish mortality 480 (24.10%) and fish pond B Gwagwalada had the highest 1050 (52.60%).Strong positive correlation(r=0.7,0.9,1) existed between fluctuation in physicochemical parameters and fish mortality in all the ponds except fish pond B Gwagwalada. Most of the Physicochemical parameters were also strongly correlated with one another. The essence of monitoring water quality in fish ponds, clearing ponds of rotten leaves, unconsumed feed and faecal matters to reduce organic matter which can impact adversely on water quality is also highlighted.
