Genetic diversity evaluation of Paraschistura bampurensis (Nikolskii, 1900) in Shapour and Berim Rivers (Iran) using microsatellite markers

Abstract
Paraschistura bampurensis is one of the species of genus Paraschistura. It is distributed in Iran and Pakistan freshwater. This paper reports a study carried out on genetic diversity and population structure of P. bampurensis in Shapour and Berim river basins, Iran. 100 samples of 50 fish each were collected from each river and were used. Microsatellite markers have been increasingly used in population genetics studies. In this study, a total of six microsatellite loci and two sampling populations were used. The average number of observed alleles in Shapour and Berim population accounted for 13.5 and 12.5, respectively. The average number of allele’s level in the population accounted for 13, well above the reported values for freshwater fishes. The mean expected and observed heterozygosity mean were 0.562 and 0.861, respectively. Approximately all loci showed a deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The genetic similarity and distance between the two populations were 0.402 and 0.669, respectively. According to the analysis, it seems that P. bampurensis has a desirable genetic diversity in the investigated regions.

Polyculture of seabass with tilapia for the utilization of brown fields in the coastal areas of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh

Abstract
Disease outbreak in shrimp culture sector has abandoned the vast coastal areas of Bangladesh. These abandoned areas treated as ‘brown fields’ could be utilized for finfish culture using low cost inputs. This type of culture practice has the potential to be successful in the coastal waters due to having seasonally fluctuating salinity of 0 to 15 ppt. The present study was conducted to determine the growth and survival of seabass (LATES CALCARIFER) and tilapia (OREOCHROMIS NILOTICUS) using different stocking ratios without giving any supplementary feed to seabass. Tilapia was stocked at 1 individual/m2. Tilapia fry was expected to provide food for seabass in the selected culture ponds. The stocking ratio of tilapia and seabass were 4:1, 5:1 and 6:1 in ponds with three replicates for each treatment. During 3 months culture period, the highest harvest weight of seabass and tilapia was recorded as 74.3 and 49.1 g/m2, respectively and the highest survival rate of seabass and tilapia was recorded as 78.3 and 61.9%, respectively. The highest growth rate of seabass was recorded as 14.67 g/day and the highest biomass of seabass and tilapia (collectively) was found as 116.9 g/m2. The present study reveals that seabass-tilapia polyculture may be a good solution to utilize the coastal brown fields of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.

Training needs of the freshwater fish growers in Assam, India

Abstract
A study was conducted in five rural development blocks of India to investigate the training needs of freshwater fish growers. A total of fifty fish growers having training exposures were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Independent variables included thirteen socio-economic parameters and dependant variables included seven critical technical areas. Frequency and percentage, mean score, standard deviation (SD), co-efficient of variance (CV) and simple correlation were analyzed. The study revealed that majority of the respondents need trainings on water quality management (80%). Only 16 and 10% respondents expressed training need on fish seed handling and transportation, and fish nutrition and feeding, respectively. Negatively significant correlations were observed between interest and attitude towards fish farming age and education. Individual independent characteristic and training needs of the farmers had negative correlations with education (X2) (p<0.01) and attitude (X13) (p<0.05). Positively significant correlation between possession of pond (X5) and age (X1) (p<0.01), income (X4) and age (X1) (p<0.01), economic motivation (X7) and age (X1) (p<0.01), decision-making ability (X8) and age (X1) (p<0.05), attitude (X13) and education (X2) (p<0.05), income (X4) and main occupation (X3)(p<0.05). The study concluded that before assessing the training needs, the fish growers of the district should be made aware of the latest technologies in aquaculture.

Comparison of experimentally elaborated food from regionally available products with commercial foods of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) in the Mexican highlands

Abstract
Aquaculture increasingly contributes to human nutrition, but the expansion of semi-intensive systems is limited by the high cost of commercial food. This is the case of the semi-intensive production of carp (Cyprinus carpio) in artificial lakes and reservoirs in the state of Tlaxcala in the Mexican highlands. 24% cheaper alternative food from duckweed (Lemna sp.) (37%), soya (Glycine max) (36%), corn (Zea mays) (9%), wheat grain and bran (Triticum vulgare) (9% each) was elaborated on. The increased weight of carps fed with this cheap alternative food and the commercially available food was compared as well. The contents of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids were 35, 41, and 4% respectively for both kinds of food. Two hundred carps were evenly distributed over 4 concrete tanks of 100 m2. Two tanks were assigned for feeding, each tank with one kind of food during 84 days at a rate of 5% of carp weight per day. The alternative food performed better than the commercial food. We conclude that the cost of food for carp production in the Mexican highlands can significantly be reduced by switching to the alternative food.

An epizootic of Ichthyophthiriasis among fishes in Armand River, Iran

Abstract
Ichthyophthirius multifiliis is one of the most important ciliated protozoan parasites of freshwater fish and has been frequently reported from different fish species from Iran and other parts of the world. The parasite regularly is found in skin and gills with high lesions especially in gills and may result to death by disturbance of osmoregulation. The current study was done in spring and summer 2010 as a part of study of parasitic fauna of fish from Armand River. A total of 100 fish were caught from the river and were transported to the fishery laboratory, Islamic Azad University of Shahrekord, alive. Fishes were studied for parasitic infestation after anesthesia and 62 fish of totally 100 studied fish were infected to I. multifiliis. The highest infection rate was observed in Capoeta damascina (33%) and the lowest was in Glyptothorax silviae (1%). High infection of I. multifiliis in native fishes will be accompanied with high lesions in fish.

Study on temporal variation of internal fish parasites in Lake Zwai, Ethiopia

Abstract
Lake Zwai is located in the rift valley of Ethiopia. Samples of Oreochromis niloticus were collected monthly between July (2010) to June (2011) using gill nets of various mesh sizes. The results indicated that the major internal parasites recorded belong to genus Clinistomum and Contracaecum including Cestodes larval. The prevalence of the parasite differs from season to season. Hence, the infestation was high during the month July to October (2010) for Contracaecum and Clinostomum where as the frequency of Cestodes larva was high in July to August (2010) and in between May and June (2011). On the average, the prevalence was high during July to October (2010) and in June (2011). In conclusion the parasite could bring zoonotic effect on humans even though there is a specific species. Therefore, further studies should be made for identification of these parasite and other common parasites which might cause production loss in the fishery sector.
