Effect of dietary supplementation of fermented fish silage on egg production in Japanese quail (Coturnix coromandelica)

Abstract

The effect of dietary supplementation of fermented fish silage on egg production in Japanese quail was investigated. Body weight gain, egg production and egg quality parameters (shape index, albumen index, yolk index, shell thickness and Hauge unit) were determined. There was no significant difference observed in the body weight gain in fermented fish silage supplemented birds as compared to that of dried fish waste and unsalted dried fish supplemented groups of birds. The total egg production and egg Internal Quality Unit (Haugh unit) of fermented fish silage fed birds was significantly higher compared to the other groups of birds. The results of the study indicate that incorporation of fermented fish waste silage in the poultry feed formulation can increase the egg production in Japanese quails.

Comparative assessment of the profit margin of catfish reared in concrete tank and earthen pond

Abstract

This study was conducted using the same feeding strategies and stocking density to determine the effect of using two different rearing facilities (earthen and concrete) of the same size (10 x 10 x 1.5 m) each on profitability of fish reared to market size in eight months. Results indicated that final mean weight (Initial mean weight 15g/fish of Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) fed a monthly adjusted ration based on fish growth was greater in earthen pond (1.1 kg) than in concrete tank (0.9 kg). Despite higher survivability (70%) recorded in concrete tank as against the 60% in earthen pond, results further revealed that the size of fish harvested affected the biomass, which negatively affected the profitability. The earthen pond produced a profit of N 73,000 as against the N 52,000 from concrete tank. Profit margin of N 21,000 realized between the two structures demonstrated that, final mean weight of fish reared to market size was greatly influenced by culture media.

Assessment of population parameters of edible clam from two estuaries in Southern India

Abstract

The population parameters of the edible clam Meretrix casta (Chemnitz) from two estuaries along the coast of north Kerala, Southern India were estimated. M. casta has been cited as vulnerable as per al. (2006a). Growth of M. casta from the east coast has been reported by Abraham (1963), Durve (1970: 73) and Sreenivasan (1983). Jayawickrema and Wijeyratne (2009) have described the population dynamics of M. (IUCN) population status. The asymptotic length (L∞) for M. casta from Chaliyar estuary was 24.24 The growth coefficient (K) was 1.8-1. The growth performance index (ф') was found to be 1.92 and t0 was calculated at -0.04283547 years. The length weight relationship is given by Log Y = -1.259635861 + 3.090977418Log X, r = 0.903010085. The total mortality (Z) estimate for M. casta from Chaliyar estuary was 3.92 year-1; fishing mortality (F) 2.12 year-1. Exploitation level (E) was 0.54. The asymptotic length (L∞) for M. casta from Kavvai estuary was 26.5 mm. The growth coefficient (K) was 2.0-1. The growth performance index (ф') was found to be 2.03 and t0 was calculated at -0.03441665 years. The length weight relationship is given by Log Y = -0.98701877 + 3.054878207 Log X, r = 0.613724895. The total mortality (Z) estimate for M. casta from Kavvai estuary was 2.98 year-1; fishing mortality (F) 0.98 year-1. Exploitation level (E) was 0.33. The M. casta is under exploited from both the estuaries. There is potential for increased exploitation of the edible clam from both estuaries since the present exploitation levels are far below the maximum sustainable yield (MSY).

Comparisons between two production–scale methods for the intensive culture of juveniles spotted babylon, Babylonia areolata, to marketable sizes

Abstract

This study is the first attempt to compare the aquaculture potential on growth, production and economic analysis for growth of spotted babylon juveniles (Babylonia areolata) to marketable sizes using the large-scale operation of flow-through canvas ponds and earthen ponds. This study shows that the average growth rates in body weight were 0.91-1.07 g/month and 0.82 – 0.98 g/month for the canvass pond and earthen pond trials, respectively. At the end of the experiment, final body weights of snails ranged from 5.6 - 6.6 and 5.2 – 6.2 g for the canvas pond and earthen pond trials, respectively. Total yields per production cycle were 1,930 and 1,760 kg for the canvas pond and earthen pond trials, respectively. For economic analysis, investment requirements of the canvas pond trial ($US18,629.6) was higher than that of earthen pond trial ($US8,832.3) and total cost per production cycle were estimated to be $US13,143.3 and 10,162.4 for the canvas pond and earthen pond trials, respectively. Net return per production cycle of the canvas pond ($US5,075.9) was lower than that of earthen pond trial ($US6,452.0) and payback period were estimated to be 1.8 and 0.7 production cycle for the canvas pond and earthen pond trials, respectively. This study indicated that grow out of juvenile B. areolata in earthen ponds was highly profitable than those in flow-through canvas ponds.

Economic viability for the use of microfinance bank loan on aquaculture development in Ogun State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined the economic viability of the use of microfinance bank loan on aquaculture development in Ogun state, Nigeria. The simple random sampling technique was used in selecting eighty aquaculturists that provided the primary data used in this study. The primary data were collected with the aid of well-structured, validated and pre-tested sets of interview schedules, administered through personal interviews and observations, so as to elicit the required information from the targeted loan users and were analyzed using descriptive, budgetary analyses and profitability ratios. Results showed a mean age of 47 and 43 years for beneficiaries of microfinance bank loan and non-beneficiaries respectively, while 57.5 and 42.5% had secondary education and an average household size of 5 persons, their vast experience in fish farming (13 and 12 years) has been a facilitating factor in productivity improvement in the localities. Gross margin of N27,461.48 and N59,030.31; benefit cost ratio of 1.58:1 and 6.9:1 shows that, aquaculture was profitable and viable. Findings concluded that, aquaculture is a profitable business with a high return on investment; therefore adequate policies should be made to ensure that the interest rate is subsidized for increase in the supply of animal protein source.

Monosex production of African catfish, Heterobranchus longifilis, through gynogenesis and androgenesis

Abstract

Chromosome engineering is a biotechnology tool currently used for fish improvement. Heterobranchus longifilis gynogens were produced by fertilizing eggs with irradiated sperm of the same species and subjecting the zygote to cold shock at 5°C, 40 min after fertilization for 15 min. To induce androgens, irradiated eggs were fertilized with normal spermatocytes and allowed to incubate for 40 min, then cold-shocked at 5°C for 15 min in a thermoregulated chamber to restore diploidy. Induction of gynogenesis and androgenesis was possible as 50.7 and 6.7% hatchability were obtained, respectively. After six days of rearing, the percentage survival of gynogens (97.8%) was better than that of the androgens (6.25%).
