User Satisfaction and the Provision of Information Services in Agricultural Research Libraries in Nigeria

Abstract

The study examined the extent to which users are satisfied with reference and circulation services provision by agricultural research libraries in Nigeria. Descriptive survey method was used for the study. Through purposive sampling six agricultural research libraries: (three university of agricultural libraries and three agricultural research institute libraries) were selected from three out of six agricultural zones of Nigeria. A total of 701 respondent’s, 241 from agricultural research institute libraries and four hundred and sixty (460) users from university of agricultural libraries were obtained in this study. The study finds out that reference and circulation services were highly provided by the agricultural research libraries in Nigeria. Majority of the users were satisfied with both the reference and circulation services provision by the agricultural research libraries. However, referral service and shelf management of books were rated dissatisfied. Irregular internet services, expensive, internet services, outdated material and staff unresponsiveness were some of the constraints to user satisfaction. The study recommended that there is need for librarian to design system that can facilitate and enhance referral services between the library and users. Adequate shelf management system that would allow proper shelf arrangement of books should also be put in place.

Abstract

The present study attempts at analyzing the availability of Information Communication Technology infrastructure facilities in high court libraries in India. The court libraries need rapid Information Communication Technology infrastructure and in this context, there is a need for adequate development of electronic resources. This study traces out the nature of electronic resources, internet services, Xeroxing, printing facilities and so on with reference to the selected institutions of India.

Information access and learning strategies of non-traditional students at Kenyan Universities

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the information needs and study behaviour of non-traditional university students, university libraries’ role in information provision, how it impacts on the academic development of the students, challenges they face and make recommendations on how the university libraries can improve the situation. The non-traditional students face many challenges that include lack of adequate time to study, communication breakdowns, inadequate information resources, lack of support from their employers or sponsors, family commitments and shortage of trained library personnel. Meeting the needs of non-traditional students by the university libraries is essential to the social role of the library. These can only be achieved if university libraries adequately revamp and organize library and information services in recognition of their growing user needs, which include access of information in the comfort of their locations; whenever and wherever they are. Data was collected from the existing sources which included both print and electronic media as well as utilizing the author’s professional experience. The study recommended that proper planning for non-traditional students need to be done with the urgency it deserves in line with their growing demand for library and information services across universities. The planning should be done in a way that the traditional students should not have undue advantage over the non-traditional ones.
