Tests of direct sowing of the durum wheat under pivot in the Saharan zone: Influence on yield components

Abstract
Our experiment is mainly based on the comparison of two methods of tillage leading of cereal cultivation under pivot in the arid zone, a case of El Meniâa (wilaya of Ghardaia). To achieve this, we have tested the technique of direct sowing in the Saharan zone by applying a random block experimental device with two treatments, T1 and T2, representing, respectively, a direct sowing and a sowing preceded by soil tillage by means of a double passage of the tine cultivator. The results show that the obtained yields reveal no significant difference between the two treatments, which means that the leading of cereal cultivation under pivot can do without a prior tillage.

Evaluation of eucalyptus essential oil against some plant pathogenic fungi

Abstract
Antifungal activity of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh.) essential oil was evaluated and suppressed the mycelial growth of postharvest pathogenic fungi, Penicillium digitatum, Aspergillus flavus, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and soilborne pathogenic fungi, Pythium ultimum, Rhizoctonia solani, Bipolaris sorokiniana pathogenic fungi. The experiment was carried out with Whatman paper disc method in 25, 50, 75 and 100% concentration of essential oil on PDA culture at 25°C and mycelial growth measured daily for 30 days. The antifungal activity was evaluated under a randomized completely factorial design with three replications. The result showed eucalyptus essential oil in all concentration had completely inhibition of mycelial growth only in P. ultimum and R. solani.

Host location and ovipositional preference of Elaeidobius kamerunicus on four host palm species

Abstract
The response of the oil palm pollinating weevil Elaeidobius kamerunicus Faust (Coleoptera: Cucurlionidae) to the inflorescence of different palm species was tested in a choice, non- choice and a four arm- olfactometer bioassay. Weevils preferred significantly the inflorescence of oil palm (E. guineensis Jacq) for oviposition. In both choice and non-choice tests using mated adult females, significantly more eggs were laid on oil palm than coconut, livingstona and royal palms. E. kamerunicus is able to locate its host plant by olfactory stimuli. These experiments support the hypothesis that pollen–seeking insects use pollen odour cues to locate its oviposition site.

Combining abilities of maize inbred lines for grey leaf spot (GLS), grain yield and selected agronomic traits in Kenya

Abstract
The genetics of resistance to grey leaf spot (GLS) disease, grain yield and selected agronomic traits was studied in 42 F1 progenies from a full diallel cross among seven maize inbred lines. These 42 F1 progenies and seven parents were evaluated at three locations; Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI), Kiboko, KARI Kakamega and University of Nairobi (Field station) during the period June 2006 to April 2008. The experiments were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Combining ability analyses were conducted on the across site data of grey leaf spot disease, grain yield and selected agronomic traits using Griffing’s method one, model one in the SAS program. Additive gene action played a greater role than non-additive gene action in the inheritance of resistance to grey leaf spot disease whereas the non additive effects were more important in the inheritance of grain yield. Reciprocal effects were not significant for GLS disease resistance and grain yield indicating absence of maternal effects for these traits. The inbred lines, CML 384 and CML 373 were the best combiners for grain yield with general combining ability (GCA) effects of 0.79 and 0.56 respectively while TZMI 711 and CML 373 were the best combiners for GLS resistance with highest negative values for GCA of -0.51 and -0.398, respectively. The local maize breeders could now incorporate the genes for GLS resistance in CML 373 and TZMI 711 and the grain yield genes in CML 384 into elite lines using recurrent and backcross methods, respectively in order to increase maize production and productivity in Kenya.
