Growth and Development of Shoots from Gongronema latifolia Benth Stem Cuttings in Various Rooting Media

Abstract
Vegetative propagation of Gongronema latifolia Benth commonly used as a forest leafy vegetable and spice, was studied in three rooting media (sawdust, ricehull and soil) under two seasons in Nsukka. The study showed that G. latifolia could be effectively propagated by stem cuttings. There was significant reduction in number of days to shoot initiation and growth in sawdust medium in the wet season. Sawdust and soil gave a better performance of the cuttings in opening of apical buds, initiation of shoots, percentage of rooted cuttings, number of vines, vine length and number of opposite leaves on vines in both seasons. Even though, both media performed similarly in most of the attributes, sawdust medium will be preferred to soil because it is readily available and affordable. Effective and high percentage rooting of G. latifolia stem cuttings, which will provide excellent conservation of a selected clone derived from virgin forest and hybridization, could be achieved in sawdust medium during the dry season.

Analyzing the Effectiveness of Forest Policy in Nigeria: A Case Study of Edo State

Abstract
The research was undertaken from 1997-2000 to investigate how forest policy has faired in meeting the set objectives in forestry contexts and development in study area. The result showed that deforestation and consolidation of forest reserves accounted for 73.64 and 3.10%, respectively. The result also revealed that there was significant difference in the participation of professional foresters and taskforce as well as regeneration and exploitation of forest resources (P<0.05). It also revealed that there were significant differences among the threats to forest protection (P<0.05) and further analysis with LSD identified trespass as the most dominant threats. The result also showed that the increase in employment, creation of man made forest and encouragement of private forestry accounted for 41.65, 19.85 and 10.19% respectively. It was observed that there was no significant difference among the various rates of decline of the forest estates under review.

Assessment of fallow and cover crops for nematode control in diverse agroecological zones of Southwestern Nigeria

Abstract
A study was conducted in three agroecological zones of south-western Nigeria to evaluate the effect of siam weed (Chromolaena odorata) and mucuna (Mucuna utilis) cover/fallow crops on plant-parasitic nematode population. The natural bush regrowth was used as control. Plant-parasitic nematodes were identified and counted during the fallow periods. Eleven genera of nematodes were identified and three (Meloidogyne, Pratylenchus, and Helicotylenchus) species were predominant across the trial locations. Other important genera present were Scutellonema, Tylenchorhynchus and Rotylenchus species. Nematode population densities of pre-crop were lowest in Alagba soil (Rhodic lixisols) at Ikenne in the wet forest zone of Nigeria. The populations in Iwo soil (Rhodic haplustalf) at Ibadan, a dry forest zone was lower than in the Temidire soil (Plinthic luvisol) at Ilora in the derived savannah of south-western Nigeria. There was significant suppression of nematode population densities under the different crops as the fallow period increased. The population reduction in the different locations depended on the nematode species and the cover crops. The natural bush re- growth had the least effect on the nematode suppression at the end of the fallow period. On the average, siam weed fallow reduced nematode population densities by 67-79%, mucuna by 64-72% and the natural bush by 30-49% across the trial locations. For effective nematode suppression with fallow cropping, proper determination of the principal nematode species predominant in an environment is essential.

Biocontrol of Zonocerus variegatus population using Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium sp.

Abstract
Microbial control of caged populations of Zonocerus variegatus was carried out using indigenous fungal entomopathogens isolated from the grasshopper’s cadaver. Bioassay response indicated a dose-dependent mortality coupled with drastic reduction in food consumption among spores infected grasshoppers. Lethal time (LT50) of 4.6 days for 103 spores/ml and 3.8 days for 107 spores/ml of oil formulation of Beauveria bassiana were observed. While Metarhizium sp recorded LT 50 of 9.0 days and 2.8 days for 103 and 107 spores/ml, respectively. The results obtained were discussed in relation to use of the isolates in the control Z. variegatus infestation in forest agro-ecosystem of south west, Nigeria.

Abstract
The cashew seedlings survival after planting is a major factor affecting the productivity of the cashew-based agroforestry systems. This research investigated the factors influencing the cashew seedlings survival at juvenile stage for the resilient and productive cashew-based agroforestry systems in Burkina Faso. Different cashew seedlings clones were planted in three field experiment plots in the south west region. The living, dead, stressed percentages and numbers of seedlings were evaluated after 15 months to assess the survival. The seedlings survival was sensitive to the rainfall, temperature and soil conditions and under the genetics factors control. The application of the good sylvicultural practices would improve the seedlings survival. The cashew adaptation to the rainfall, temperature and soil conditions was under the genetics factors control. The farmers training and awareness increase about the good sylvicultural practices and the intensification of the research for selecting and promoting the cashew clones that are adapted to the rainfall, temperature and soil conditions of the different regions of the cashew production could improve the seedlings survival contributing to the productive and resilient cashew-based agroforestry systems. Further research to investigate the cashew nuts production and quality of the clones is required to recommend the performant clones.

Abstract
The loss of Africa’s forests and bioresources is occurring at an alarming rate, a consequence of increasing population pressure, agricultural land degradation, urbanization and neglect. There is a growing recognition worldwide that conservation and sustainable management of bioresources are pressing priorities in the world today. The choice of conservation methods and techniques depend on the objectives of the particular conservation effort, the breeding system and behaviour of the species in question as well as the available resources including funds, trained personnel, infrastructure and technologies. The use of biotechnological tools and “bioprospecting” will open new vistas in medicine, agriculture, silviculture, horticulture, environment and other important issues. This paper reviews some biotechnological tools that could be harnessed in promoting conservation and sustainable use of bioresources.
