Effect of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash on growth and flower yield of ratoon spider lily (Hymenocallis littoralis)

Abstract

The investigation was carried out to study the effect of various levels of N, P and K on ratoon spider lily. All the growth parameters were significantly influenced due to different levels of nitrogen. Application of nitrogen at 400 Kg N ha-1 with three equal split doses recorded significantly the highest plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf length and width, number of flower stalk per plant, length of flower stalk, number of flower buds per stalk, number of flower buds per plant, flowering duration of single stalk, number of flower buds per net plot as well as flower yield per hectare. Phosphorus also plays a significant role in improving growth parameters at higher level except, number of leaves per plant. Phosphorus at 200 Kg P2O5 was recorded maximum number of flower stalks per plant, number of flower buds per stalk, length of flower stalk, maximum flowering duration, number of flower buds per plant, number of flower buds harvested per net plot and flower yield per hectare. The optimum growth and flowering yield was obtained with application of 400 Kg N ha-1 and 200 Kg P2O5 ha-1.

Pathway and genes for the biosynthesis and action of abscisic acid incarnation flowers

Abstract

The pathway and genes for the biosynthesis and action of abscisic acid (ABA) have been elucidated in great detail using major model plants and crops, such as Arabidopsis, maize, rice and tomato, tobacco and so on, as experimental materials. However, a few studies have been done with minor crops and ornamentals. ABA plays a causal role in the induction of ethylene biosynthesis in carnation flowers. In this review, therefore, it was aimed (1) to reconstitute the pathway for ABA biosynthesis and action in carnation with ABA-related genes, which were recently identified from its flower tissues, and (2) to cross-check the identities of the identified genes with genes deposited in a carnation data base (Carnation DB), which was recently released to the public. A total of eleven identified ABA-related genes were allocated in their right steps, reconstituting the pathway for ABA biosynthesis and action. Furthermore, the cross-check of the genes in the reconstituted pathway with those in the Carnation DB could specify the function of five genes, which had remained un-annotated in the Carnation DB. This review suggested that the pathway for ABA biosynthesis and action, the same as that in major model plants and crops, is functioning in carnation, and implied that this is the case in other minor crops and ornamentals.

Assessing the effect of tree canopy stocking on home energy use savings during peak cooling months in West Virginia USA

Abstract
 
This study estimated the direct energy savings for homes in relation to tree cover. Specific site differences using actual electric usage for homes were identified. Four sites, ranging between thirty and forty houses per site, were selected at various canopy cover levels (15, 25, 39, and 54%). Tree attributes were measured for each parcel containing a house. Home energy use for cooling months (June-September) was obtained from Allegheny Power, for the years 2005-2008. A difference in tree height and crown area was observed, but these did not correlate with differences in energy use. The percentage of shrubs around the house was found to differ and a weak, but significant, relation was identified between percentage of shrubs and energy usage. Energy usage was lowest when canopy coverage was highest and state urban forest managers should concentrate efforts to increase the urban forest in cities and region that have low canopy coverage.

Effect of planting density and transplanting time on growth and curd yield of broccoli

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of planting density (50 x 30cm, 45 x 45cm and 60 x 45cm) with four transplanting dates (20th November, 10th December, 31st December and 20th January) in factorial randomized block design with three replications. The data revealed that significantly higher growth parameters viz., plant height (43.13cm), plant spread (86.66 cm), number of leaves per plant (27.50 cm), stalk stem diameter (48.10mm), curd weight (834.66g), curd length (21.12cm), curd width (24.87cm), harvest index (41.83%) and yield per hectare (37.04t) were recorded in December 10th planting (D2). Among the different spacings, wider spacing of 60 x 45 cm (S3) significantly recorded higher values for growth and yield parameters under study except plant height (39.01 cm) and yield per hectare (27.03 t). Interaction effect of different spacing and transplanting dates D2S1 (December 10th and 50x30 cm) was found to be non-significant for various parameters except plant height, harvest index and yield per hectare.

The Influence of Nitrogen and Phosphorus on the growth and bulb yield of Garlic (Allium sativum L.) Varieties at Beressa Watershed, MesqanWoreda, South Central Ethiopia

Abstract

Garlic is one of the most important bulb vegetables used as spice and flavoring agent of food and medicinal plants throughout the globe. Numerous problems accounted for the low productivity of garlic in Ethiopia, among which appropriate fertilizer management is the major factor. Therefore, this experiment was undertaken with the objective to investigate the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus levels on growth and bulb yield of two garlic varieties at Beressa watershed, Mesqan woreda, South Central Ethiopia under supplemental irrigation from November to April 2010/11. The treatments for the experiment were two garlic varieties, 4 levels of Nitrogen (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg N/ha) and 3 levels of Phosphorus (0, 50 and 100 kg P2O5/ha) arranged in Randomized Complete Block Design. Data on growth parameters (days to maturity, plant height, leaf number, leaf area, leaf area index and shoot dry weight) and total bulb yield were collected. The varieties showed significant difference on plant height, leaf area, leaf area index, shoot dry weight and bulb yield. Nitrogen also significantly affected bulb yield along with all the growth parameters. Phosphorus had significantly influenced number of leaf per plant and bulb yield. Leaf number per plant and bulb yield was significantly affected by the interaction of N and P. The highest bulb yield of 3.34 t/ha was recorded at 100 kg N + 100 kg P2O5/ha combination, and that was 244 % higher than the control and statistically similar to the yield 3.27 t/ha obtained at 100 kg N and 50 kgP2O5/ha combination for Tsedey92. Hence, tentatively 100 kg N and 50 kg P2O5 /ha using variety Tsedey92 was recommended for the farmers of the study area.

Abstract

The review of supply and marketing of floriculture in Ethiopia was conducted to analyses the production potential and to know the marketing share of the country. The data was collected from secondary and primary sources. Ethiopia has been operating in the floriculture industry for over 20 years. As is the case in many developing countries, the major export items of Ethiopia are dominated by few agricultural products that earn very small amounts in the international market. Moreover, most of the exports are destined to only few countries. Given the highly capital intensive nature of production and processing, rose farming is not a smallholder activity. It is also important to note the extremely tightly controlled time dimension of the logistics process, given the product attributes desired and the fragility and perishability of the roses. Another characteristic of the Ethiopian floriculture sector is the lack of domestically produced inputs that flower producers can access. The export volume and value of cut-flowers accounts for a small proportion of the total exports of Ethiopia. In recent years the sector is showing improvements in terms of the quality and quantity of exports to the international market.
