A study of vegetative propagation by mini-cuttings and their rooting potential of canjerana with different concentrations of IBA

Abstract

Canjerana (Cabralea canjerana (Vell.) Martius) is a tree species indigenous to Brazil that when grown and managed in plantation systems are of great ecological and economic importance. Due to the difficulty of producing seminal seedlings, we examine the possibility of vegetative propagation by evaluating the rooting potential of canjerana mini-cuttings with different concentrations of indolbutyric acid (IBA) and substrate combinations. Mini-cuttings were treated with 2000 mg/L of IBA and planted in commercial substrate; coarse sand; carbonized rice husks; and a combination of the two. Apical and nodal mini-cuttings were treated with 0, 1000, 2000 and 3000 mg/L of IBA and planted in a combination of commercial substrate, coarse sand and carbonized rice husks. A mini-clonal hedge was formed with three clones of canjerana to evaluate mini-stump productivity and mini-cutting rooting. The combination of commercial substrate, coarse sand and carbonized rice husks maximized mini-cuttings rooting. Nodal mini-cuttings had higher rooting capability than apical ones. The application of 3000 mg/L of IBA improved rooting differentiation and growth of canjerana mini-cuttings. Canjerana clones differ in rooting capability and survival rates in vegetative propagation systems, but the use of a mini-cutting propagation system is a feasible production technique for this important species.

Evaluation of seedling emergence of Senna siamea as influenced by crude oil in soil

Abstract

A study was carried out in 2011 at the Nursery site of the Department of Forestry and Wildlife, Faculty of Agriculture, Delta State University, Asaba Campus, Nigeria to evaluate the seedling emergence of Senna siamea as influenced by crude oil in soil. 0.0, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0 and 10.0% (w/w) of the oil constituted treatments 10 seeds were sown in the soil crude oil mixture. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. The results showed that contamination of soil with crude oil significantly (P≥0.05) reduced percentage germination, delayed germination by increasing the days to 50% germination and reducing the rate of germination in S siamea when compared with the uncontaminated plots. The effects were generally oil level-dependent. Only two seeds planted in 10.0% (w/w) of soil contaminated germinated while the majority did not sprout. This study has shown that oil in soil has a significant effect of reducing seedling emergence in Senna siamea. This study has a great ecological significance especially in the Niger Delta.

An assessment of community perceived impacts of participatory forest management on community livelihoods

Abstract

Participatory Forest Management (PFM) process was piloted in Arabuko Sokoke Forest (ASF) Dida beat in 1997 as an alternative forest management approach This was necessitated by national outcry over forest resource degradation, clamour for democratization and need for better forest governance. The motivation for introducing PFM were as diverse as were the stakeholders: for KFS and other government departments’ it was forest protection and biodiversity conservation with communities being motivated by anticipated opportunity to access benefits and participate in forest management. Non-Governmental Organizations were motivated by pioneering PFM introduction in Kenya and community poverty alleviation. The objective of this study was to assess community perceived impacts of PFM on community livelihoods and forest management. PRA tools and household questionnaire were used for the survey of 40 randomly selected households. The study has shown that PFM can contribute to better forest management. About 87.5% of respondents perceived that the forest condition had improved since 1995. PFM contributes to improved livelihoods as indicated by 64% of the respondents in the PFM villages of Dida who perceived that household well-being overall improved between 1995 and 2005 compared to Vimburuni village (non PFM village) in which only 31% of respondents indicated improved wellbeing.

Pathway and genes for the biosynthesis and action of abscisic acid in carnation flowers

Abstract 

The pathway and genes for the biosynthesis and action of abscisic acid (ABA) have been elucidated in great detail using major model plants and crops, such as Arabidopsis, maize, rice and tomato, tobacco and so on, as experimental materials. However, a few studies have been done with minor crops and ornamentals. ABA plays a causal role in the induction of ethylene biosynthesis in carnation flowers. In this review, therefore, it was aimed (1) to reconstitute the pathway for ABA biosynthesis and action in carnation with ABA-related genes, which were recently identified from its flower tissues, and (2) to cross-check the identities of the identified genes with genes deposited in a carnation data base (Carnation DB), which was recently released to the public. A total of eleven identified ABA-related genes were allocated in their right steps, reconstituting the pathway for ABA biosynthesis and action. Furthermore, the cross-check of the genes in the reconstituted pathway with those in the Carnation DB could specify the function of five genes, which had remained un-annotated in the Carnation DB. This review suggested that the pathway for ABA biosynthesis and action, the same as that in major model plants and crops, is functioning in carnation, and implied that this is the case in other minor crops and ornamentals.

Variation in anatomical features along Acer platanoides (Sapindaceae) branches

Abstract 

This paper investigates the balance between hydraulics and mechanics in tree branches by analyzing changes in the percentage of area composed of four cell types along Acer platanoides L. branches. Percent area composed of vessels members, fibers, ray parenchyma, and axial parenchyma were compared at five locations along each branch from the stem towards the branch tips. The percentage of each cell type was not found to be correlated with the angleof branch attachment to the trunk, nor the top versus bottom of each branch location. In general vessel radii decreased in the distal direction along each branch. Percent area comprised of vessels was highest in the middle of the branches and lowest at both ends, while the percent area for fibers did not differ in the secondary (radial) growth. Vessel to fiber ratios were found to vary in the same pattern as percent area vessel, which suggests that water movement is governing the balance between hydraulics and mechanics in these branches.

The Performance of open field Gerbera in response to planting time

Abstract

Adjustment in planting time is one of the effective means of improving cut flower output under open field conditions. A field experiment was carried out on Gerbera with eight different dates of planting (15th March - 15th October) on Alfisol during 2006 to 2009. Difference in planting time induced a significant difference in performance of Gerbera, due to variation in soil moisture content (153.2 g/kg in May planting to 301.6 g/kg in August planting, coinciding linearly with rainfall received). However, the treatment with June planting produced the best response in terms of number of leaves/plant (15.96), leaf area (138.78 cm2), plant height (27.09 cm), flower size (9.12 cm), stalk length (35.77 cm), number of flowers (220.1/m2) and flower yield (2.95 kg/m2) compared to rest of the other dates of planting. The study, hence, suggested that an effective benchmark of optimum soil moisture (201.0 g/kg, that is, 82.8% of 33 KPa soil moisture) is necessary to harness upon the benefits of suitable planting time under rainfed open field conditions.
