The Impact of National Culture on Economic Productivity and Competitiveness

Herciu Mihaela*, Ogrean Claudia and Belascu Lucian

Lucian Blaga University, Sibiu, Romania.

Accepted 18 October, 2025

The 21st century offered new challenges for the national economy. One of the most controversial aspects of globalization was the worldwide spread and dominance of the American culture. The cultural dimensions that characterize a nation had a major impact on national competitiveness, although in the globalization age the nations are tending to lose their own identity and culture. Competitiveness always was the motive which generates economic growth through productivity. The multicultural dimension of the world is a well-known and acknowledged fact. It is manifested both inside the borders of a nation, and outside them, and there are certain nations which are called „immigration countries” in which an own culture is impossible to bring into the debate, rather a conglomerate of cultures. The main idea of the paper was to identify the impact and the link, with the help of CORREL index, between cultural dimensions – power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance measured by Geert Hofstede – and national competitiveness of a country measured by World Economic Forum through global competitiveness index (GCI). The results exhibited a significant impact of cultural dimensions on national competitiveness.

Key words: national competitiveness, cultural dimensions, power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance.

Accepted 09 November, 2025

In today’s dynamic marketplace, manufacturing companies are under strong pressure to introduce new products for long-term survival with their competitors. Nevertheless, every company cannot cope up progressively or immediately with the market requirements due to knowledge dynamics being experienced in the competitive milieu. Increased competition and reduced product life cycles put force upon companies to develop new products faster. In response to these pressing needs, there should be some new approach compatible in flexible circumstances. This paper presents a solution based on the popular Stage-Gate system, which is closely linked with virtual team approach. Virtual teams can provide a platform to advance the knowledge-base in a company and thus to reduce time-to-market. This article introduces conceptual product development architecture under a virtual team umbrella. The paper describes all the major aspects of new product development (NPD), NPD process and its relationship with virtual teams, Stage-Gate system finally presents a modified Stage-Gate system to cope up with the changing needs. It also provides the guidelines for the successful implementation of virtual teams in new product development.

Key words: Modified stage-gate system, virtual product development, conceptual model.

Mark Lungu

E-mail: [email protected]

Accepted 24 March, 2025

This paper uses a score board to determine the sources of macroeconomic imbalances in the Malawi economy during the period 2003 to 2014. The study employs a scoreboard to capture and assess macroeconomic imbalances. The design of the scorecard is based on the European monetary Union (EMU), developed under the Macroeconomic Imbalance Procedure (MIP) in September 2011. From the external sustainability side, Malawi has high external position vulnerabilities which are depicted in sources of imbalances in the economy namely the persistent current account deficit, Net international Investment Position (NIIP) deficit, unfavorable terms of trade as evidenced by the low export market share and unstable Real Effective Exchange rate (REER). From the internal sustainability perspective, sources of macroeconomic imbalances include volatile gross domestic product, unstable prices, high government domestic debt, low private sector credit, high unemployment and low capacity utilization.

Keywords: Macroeconomic, Exchange rate, Policy, Utilization, Imbalances.

Accepted 5 April, 2025

This paper examines the relationship between human well-being and forms of community capital in the eight Black Belt counties in the west- central region of Alabama. This region is one of the poorest in the United States with high proportion of African- American populations. Cross-sectional spatial regression models were estimated using the data from the U.S. Population and Economic Census, Geographic Information System, and satellite imageries of 2000. The results indicate that geographic space is highly segregated in these counties and African Americans are less likely to be found in areas high in built, natural, and political capital. Service-providing entities such as financial, industrial, and social capital are located more in urbanized centers. The results suggest that social capital is strongly correlated with human well-being. The findings provide spatially-explicit empirical insights and suggest targeting rural development policies to create more social capital and address specific needs of the region, especially of African-American populations.

Key words: African Americans, census data, land cover, proximity, rural, social capital, spatial.
