Abstract
The following study has been done to study the effect of proficiency in English on the performance of engineering students in group discussion. The hypothesis was framed in such a way that the higher the student’s proficiency in English, the better will their performance be in group discussion. The first year students of Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology were taken as respondents. Group discussion sheets were prepared and every student was marked by three examiners on six dimensions, each dimension consisting of five marks. Class test marks of the same students were also collected. Correlation between group discussion marks and class test marks was calculated and the correlation was high. The result showed that the students who have good proficiency in English have good self-efficacy and also perform well in group discussions. Previous studies have also shown that students who have low proficiency in English have low self-efficacy, and as such they fear to perform in groups and in public. Students who are well proficient in English Language perform better and are well settled in the global market because of their better thinking and expression capability.
Key words: Proficiency, group discussion, expression capability, good self-efficacy.

Abstract
The Indian life insurance industry has its own origin and history. Since its inception, it has passed through many obstacles, hindrances to attain its present status. The income earning capacity of an individual citizen of a nation and the eagerness and awareness of the general public are the two key determinants of the growth of any insurance industry. As a result, wider mass-employment opportunities and sound educational system should be made available. In addition, the general public must be kept abreast of more knowledge and importance of life insurance, as these steps help to boost the growth of insurance industries. In this Indian context, insurance habit among the general public during the independence decade was quite rare and in the following decades, it increased slowly. There was a remarkable improvement in the Indian insurance industry soon after the acceptance and adaptation of liberalization, privatization, and globalization (LPG) in the year 1991. After 1991, the Indian life insurance industry has geared up in all respects, as well as it being forced to face a lot of healthy competition from many national as well as international private insurance players. The fall in the savings rate and increased competition in the primary market and particularly the aggressive mobilization by the mutual fund posed serious challenges to LIC.
Key words: Life insurance, liberalization, globalization.

Abstract
Institutions are established to accomplish specified goals. To achieve these goals, the human resource is seen as one of the most crucial factors, without which the goals are as good as dead. This study empirically examined strategies for employee recruitment, retention and performance in the Federal civil service (FCS) of Nigeria. To achieve the objectives of the study, questionnaires were administered to civil servants at the Office of the Head of the civil service of Nigeria and structured interview was carried out with civil servants at the FCS Commission, Abuja. The study adopted the chi-square analytical technique to analyze the variables. The results showed that the strategies for employee recruitment into the civil service are mainly based on Federal character principle (equal representation of people from different sections of the country), merit, political consideration and government discretion. In terms of strategies for employee retention, the study found that the service lagged behind in providing adequate incentives to retain its workforce for performance compared to what is obtainable in the private sector. It therefore recommends that while Federal character principle may be necessary as strategy for employee recruitment into the FCS because of Nigeria’s multicultural, ethnic and religious diversity, its application should however be carried out to reflect merit within the principle. In addition, appropriate incentives should be provided to retain competent employees for performance.
Key words: Federal civil service of Nigeria, strategies, employee recruitment, retention, performance.

Abstract
The purpose of this research paper was to find out the Ethiopian managers behavioural patterns and managerial competencies. The study explored this point from two dimensions (employees’ view point and the managers’ view point). Relevant literature reviews on behavioural patterns and managerial abilities with specific emphasis on the behaviours of managers and their competencies were made. Structured questionnaires and sporty personal interviews were administered to 500 managers and 2000 employees of Ethiopian corporate organizations located in the Capital City, Addis Ababa. Two types of questionnaires were prepared, one for measuring behavioural patterns and the other for measuring managerial competencies of the managers under observation. The questionnaires were administered to both the employees and managers. The survey data were analyzed by using statistical package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and microsoft excel software packages. The finding of this research showed that the responses from the managers and the employees with regard to the managerial behaviours and competencies were strongly contrastive for both the variables measured (managerial behaviour and managerial competence). The managers were found to view themselves as behaviourally positive (assertive) and managerially competent while the employees were found to view their managers as behaviourally either submissive or aggressive and managerially incompetent. The contrasting view of the managers and employees on the behavioural patterns and managerial competencies of the management community would establish a foundation based on which strategic corrective action plans can be put in place for the future. These corrective plans include skill development plans and behaviour oriented trainings. This paper puts forward thoughtful views of the behavioral patterns and managerial competencies of Ethiopian managers. It is analyzed both from employees’ view point and managers’ view point with the purpose of providing objective data to help design action plans that will motivate the prevalence of appropriate managerial behaviour and competencies.
