Sustainable management of municipal solid waste in Morocco: Application of PROMETHEE method for choosing the optimal management scheme

Abstract

In this paper, alternate schemes are examined and analysed aiming at the improvement of MSW management in small urban municipalities in Morocco. These schemes are estimated by developing and applying the PROMETHEE method consisting in a multi-criteria analysis of the parameters and the constraints bound to the financial, technical, environmental and social-institutional aspects. Thus, 10 alternate management schemes were compared and ranked according to their performance and their efficiency. The obtained results will certainly help the decision-makers to make a decision for the best management scheme which hold in account particularities of every region, commune or municipality in Morocco.

Bio-medical wastes disposal and management in some major hospitals of Mysore City, India

Abstract

The disposal of biomedical wastes have been studied at various hospitals like, Krishnarajendra Hospital, Mission Hospital, J.S.S. Hospital, Basappa Memorial Hospital, Apollo Hospital and Vikram Hospital for the period of six months by analyzing the procurement lists. Various issues like quantities and proportions of different categories of wastes handling, treatment and disposal methods have been examined. The process of segregation, collection, transport, storage and final disposal methods of infectious and non-infectious wastes have also been observed. One way analysis of variance test has been carried out to determine the possible interrelationship between the wastes originating from different departments of different hospitals. The proper disposal methods have not been employed in K.R. Hospital followed by J.S.S. Hospital and Mission Hospitals when compared to other hospitals. In addition, the differences in the infrastructure were examined and the consequences for waste segregation and disposal methods were also discussed under economic and ecological aspects. For this existing problem, proposed systems of bio-medical waste management are described to improve the disposal practices. A waste management strategy has also been proposed.

Abstract

Indiscriminate dumping of solid wastes along the streets and roads corners causes a lot of deadly infectious diseases which could be responsible for the large proportion of morbidity and mortality in Nigeria. A deterministic model needed for short and long term waste management and management information system in Anambra State sanitation and environmental protection agency (ANSEPA) is considered in this paper. A review of literature on model methods is presented, with brief method of the study and analysis used for the determination of the required results. Moreover, this study was aimed to determine which type of integrated solid waste management option or programme will be used to implement minimized cost and maximized benefit (benefit cost ratio) over a long period of planning period. Consequently, the model will be used by the decision makers in finding the solution to environmental, economical, sanitary, technical and social goals, through the use of equipment, routine maintenance, personal and sundry.

Public health implications of using water from wells located near municipal waste dump sites in parts of Zaria

Abstract

This study aimed at determining the contamination level and seasonal distribution of pathogens in well water located near municipal solid and liquid wastes. A total of 186 samples of well water, soil from dumpsites and liquid waste close to sampling wells were obtained from parts of Zaria. The samples were examined using standard procedures. Total plate count, coliform count determinations were done for two seasons. The mean coliform count in the study are 4.66±3.8 for wells near solid and liquid waste, 4.54±3.6 for wells near solid waste and 4.64±3.9 for wells near liquid waste. The entire well water sample had coliform counts higher than recommended standard for drinking water. The numbers in all cases were higher in the wet seasons.

Effect of leaching on heavy metals concentration of soil in some dumpsites

Abstract

Study on the effect of leaching on heavy metals concentration at dumpsites was conducted by analyzing samples of soil collected from different dumpsites located within Ikere and Ado Ekiti metropolis, South Western Nigeria. The samples were analyzed for concentrations of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, Mn, Ni, Sn and Zn. Control soil samples were taken at 200 m away from the last sampling point on each dump site down the slope and were also analyzed for the presence of these heavy metals. The results of the analyses show a significant difference in the concentration of these metals from the centre of each dumpsite at interval of 10 – 70 m down the slope (p < 0.05). The dumpsites were found to contain significant amount of toxic heavy metals. Hence, phytoremediation processes were suggested.
