On-farm demonstration of improved rice (Oryza sativa L) varieties in Pawe Woreda of Benishangul Gumuz Regional State, Ethiopia

Abstract
Four varieties (Hidasie, Nerica-12, Nerica-4 and Pawe-1) were demonstrated and evaluated on a farmer’s field. Average yield performances of the demonstrated varieties show 42.66, 34.19, 33.41 and 32.23 quintal per hectare of Pawe-1, Nerica-3, Hidasie and Nerica-12 varieties respectively. Pawe-1 variety showed better yield performance. In the ranking, Pawe-1 was selected as the best-preferred. Based on farmers’ perception, Pawe-1 was ranked first as it produces a good yield, high tilling capacity, the white colour of the grain and preferred at the market with good price. This result indicates Pawe-1 variety is farmers’ best preferred and top performed variety which can be considered as a promising variety to be widely produced by rice farmers in the study area. The yield under demonstration plots was higher than the local cultivar and the use of research recommended rice cultivation method can reduce the technology gap to a considerable extent. Therefore, it is recommended that the office of agriculture of the woreda needs further scale up the varieties to other areas to benefit quite a significant number of farmers.

Domestic resource cost approach for international competitiveness of Turkish horticultural products

Abstract
The purposes of this paper can be translated into two main areas. Firstly, what are the main horticultural crops that can be produced and exported? Secondly, are these crops utilizing efficiently the limited resources available, and how much competitive is Turkey in relation to other producers within the region? This paper deals only with competitiveness in regards to price and not quality. Comparisons were made by calculating the domestic resource cost (DRC) ratios which refers to the ratio between Opportunity costs of domestic production and value added. The results highlighted the Turkish horticultural sector as having an international competitive advantage. The most competitive crops were tomatoes followed by melons, watermelons and tangerines for the year of 2004. These findings are also supported by foreign trade statistics on the basis of quantity and earnings.

Economic assessment of seed-tuber practices of yam Dioscorea cayenensis and Dioscorea rotundata planting materials

Abstract
Planting material from different tuber parts (proximal, medial, distal) of four yam (Dioscorea cayenensis and Dioscorea rotundata) varieties (Laboko, Gangni, Alakitcha, Gnanlabo) showed significant differ-ences in number of plants emerged and time of emergence. This result confirms the value of farmer’s variety-specific handling of seed tubers. For three out of these four farmer varieties, there were significant differences in mean value of days after planting to emergence between parts of planting materials used. For all varieties, the proximal parts sprouted earlier than the medium parts and than the distal parts, and the loss was the highest for the distal parts. The rate of emergence is of economic importance in managing yam planting material by farmers. All tubers planted emerged for both the proximal part and the entire tuber of the second harvest. There was a highly significant difference between yield performances. The joint effect of variety and seed type was highly statistically significant in determining the yield obtained by yam farmers in Benin. The marginal benefit was the highest for the proximal part except for Laboko for which the highest benefit was obtained from the use of the second harvest seed-type. Laboko provided also the lowest and negative benefit for the distal part.

The choice of feasible commodities for futures trading: A study of Iranian agricultural commodities

Abstract
In this paper an attempt is made to determine the most suitable agricultural commodities to be adopted for establishing a futures market in Iran. Two different approaches are adopted: the first involves identifying factors that contribute significantly to the success or failure of existing agricultural commodities futures contracts in established futures markets. The second involves simulating the hedging performance of potential commodities to determine the optimum contract choice. The results suggest that saffron, pistachios and rice are the three most feasible commodities to be adopted in order to establish commodity futures trading in Iran.

Effect of different sowing dates on the yield and yield components of direct seeded fine rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Abstract
The research was conducted to study the response of yield and yield components of direct seeded fine rice (Oryza sativa L.) to different sowing dates during 2008 at Agronomic Research Area, University of Agriculture Faisalabad. Experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications having net plot size of 4 x 3 m. Experiment comprised of six different sowing dates that is 31st May, 10th June, 20th June, 30th June, 10th July and 20th July. Experiment was sown in 20 cm apart rows with single row hand drill using seed rate of 75 kgha-1. Nitrogen and phosphorous were applied at the rate of 120 and 60 kgha-1 respectively. Urea and diammonium phosphate (DAP) were used as sources of nitrogen and phosphorus respectively. Full dose of the phosphorous and half dose of the nitrogen were applied at sowing while the remaining half dose of nitrogen was applied in two equal splits, at 20-30 days and 45-55 days after sowing (DAS). Yield components like tillers per meter square, number of kernel per panicle and 1000-kernel showed significant response to different sowing dates. The crop sown on 20th June (D3) produced the maximum number of productive tillers per meter square (328.7), kernel per panicle (94.47). 1000-kernel weight (18.82 g) and paddy yield (4468 kgha-1). The result showed that the direct seeding of super basmati on 20th June gave the best results in term of entire yield and yield components.

Economic contributions of the forest to the economy of Edo State, Nigeria

Abstract
Evidence from the results of this current study showed that there are significant contributions from the forest to the economy of Edo State. A total of 217 mills using wood as raw materials are established in the state .The study showed that the revenue that accrued to government from 1991 - 2002 is reasonable. Apart from about 10,000 workers employed by the wood working mills the government has a number of other workers in its payroll. The control staffs are not enough and this resulted in illegal activities with negative impact on the environment. Other forest products which enhance the income of the local people are numerous. Edible fruits gathering for sale is mostly by women. The most preferred fruits are the fruits of chrysophyllum albidum and most frequent timber species is Terminalia ivorensis. It was noted that the communities were not satisfied with the government’s activities as it holds the forest in trust for the communities. To avoid the clamour for resource control with its attendant problems of violence, destruction of lives and properties like what is happening in Niger Delta, inclusion of local communities in forest management and conservation efforts is recommended. Further more, to ensure survival of existing wood based industries, reasonable revenue to government, reduction of unemployment, economic empowerment of local women etc, increased funding of the forestry sub-sector to meet its obligations (Forest regeneration, conservation, protection etc) is suggested.
