Examining the Role of Air Velocity in Optimizing Pad Evaporative Cooler Performance

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the relationship that is found among the velocity of the air passing through the pad, the obtained decrease at the temperature of the air passing the pad and the cooling efficiency at the cellulose based evaporative cooling pad, and be of help to the people who designed and operate these systems. In this study, cellulose based evaporative cooling pad (CELdek R 7060-15, Munters AB, Kista, Sweden) was used and the tests conducted were completed at 2 periods. Air velocities were determined as 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 ms-1 at the first period, and 0.75, 1.25 and 1.75 ms-1 at the second period. The water flow rate at the air velocities, chosen for both periods, was selected as 4 Lmin-1m-2. As a result of the research, it was determined that it was not possible to make a mathematical connection among velocities of the air passing through the pad, obtained decrease at the temperature of the air passing the pad and the cooling efficiency. However, it can be said that the most appropriate air velocity for the pad used in the test should be higher than 0.5 ms-1 and lower than 1.5 ms-1.

Forests as Guardians of Water: A Case Study of Istanbul’s Drinking Water Supply

Abstract

Istanbul has administrative, social and economic, drinking water problems. The forest areas of Istanbul are more important to drinking water than any other of the forest’s activities, because most of the drinking water dams are located in forest areas. This study is aimed at determining the differences between past and present forestry applications concerning drinking water production in Istanbul for a 600 year period. The level of future drinking water problems in Istanbul was also estimated. Using descriptive analysis method similarities and differences between past and present forestry applications in producing drinking water were identified. Furthermore, the trend of Istanbul’s water demand and supply for the 2010 and 2030 term was also predicted with a scenario. This study indicates that Istanbul city has historically experienced drinking water and forest resources shortages. In the past administrators were very keen to conserve forest areas and drinking water resources for the city. Various regulations to protect and improve the utilization of water resources have been created throughout the history of Istanbul. These measures today are not as effective as they once were which causes exploitation and destruction of water resources.

The Dynamics of Turkey’s Fishery Product Imports: A Quantitative Assessment

Abstract

In this study, economic factors which are effective upon the import demand of fishery products in Turkey were studied. Import demand of fishery products in Turkey is affected by the world prices, agriculture programs and policies of the governments. Turkey’s import demand of fishery products was approached as a function of domestic prices, per capita income, lagged amount of import (t-1), exchange rate of the US dollar (USD)-Turkish lira (foreign exchange rate) and the factor of trend. Parameters were estimated with regression analysis. The study is a time series analysis and the data include the period between 1996 and 2008 and they are annual. Consequently, while the gross national product, domestic real prices, exchange rate of dollar and lagged import variable were found statistically significant among the factors that affect the analysis of Turkey’s import demand of fishery products, trend factor was not found statistically significant.

Exploring the educational requirements of tea-planters in Guilan, Iran

Abstract

Agriculture has various roles on the development of Iran in different aspects. The most obvious roles are: food preparation, rural's migration prevention to urban areas, preservation of economical and political independence and material preparation for many industries. Tea is one of the crops among agricultural productions which it is still confronted with a series of poor natural and managerial barriers and lack of modern technology as well because of its key role including the most popular drink among Iranians, job creation, currency loss prevention and so on. This research was conducted with the goal of investigation of educational needs of Guilanian tea-planters in 2006 in Guilan province, Iran. 80% of domestic tea in Iran is produced in Guilan province. Statistical population of this research is farmers who are known as tea-planter according to the local norms. Among 67681 Guilanian tea-planters, 280 ones were selected randomly using Cochran's cluster test (formula) to represent the whole population. Independent variables of this research are: age, educational level, range of income, under-cultivation level, social participation, sex (gender), participation in educational and extensional activities, and the use of communicative channels and their relationship were also considered and contrasted with educational needs of tea-planters. The major device for data collection was questionnaire, which was determined after its validity and reliability. For data analysis and interactions existed among variables, descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, variance…) and inferencing statistics were used. The results obtained through the test of theories cleared that there was a meaningful and negative relationship among educational level, economical situation, under-cultivation level, connection of tea-planters with the extension agents of Agricultural Jihad with their educational need. There was also a meaningful and positive relationship between the contact of tea-planters studied and other tea-planters in the area and their educational needs. There was no meaningful relationship among age, use of communicative channels, use of educational and extensional classes, connection of tea-planters with local leaders and factory owners, tea-planter's use of radio and TV and studying of extensional periodicals with the range of educational need. Educational needs of the tea-planters who participated in educational-extensional activities or those who participated in cooperations and unions were less than that of tea-planters who didn't participate in such activities, cooperatives, and unions.

Assessing allocative efficiency among Kenyan smallholder farmers: A case study of Irish potato producers in Nyandarua North District

Abstract

Irish potato production in Kenya has been on the decline, yet this crop is a major staple and a source of cash from sales. Using a random sample of 127 smallholder farmers in Nyandarua North district this paper applied a dual stochastic efficiency decomposition technique and a two - limit Tobit model, after disaggregating economic efficiency components using a dual stochastic frontier function, to analyze resource allocative efficiency in Irish potato production. This is in view of the unclear determinants of declining potato production trends in Kenya and considering that the Irish potato is a major staple and cash crop. The paper establishes that Irish potato production in Nyandarua North district is characterized by decreasing returns to scale with a mean allocative efficiency of 0.57. It was further established that farming experience, access to extension and credit, and membership in a farmers’ association positively and significantly influenced allocative efficiency. Implications of the study results are drawn.

Investigating the interplay between no-till techniques and roundup ready soybean technology

Abstract

The objective of this study has been to identify the factors that influence the concurrent adoption of no-till technology and roundup ready (RR) soybean technology. Using data from a survey of 610 soybean growers in the United States and a two-equation probit model, our results reveal that ignoring the simultaneous nature of the decision to use no-till and RR soybean technologies could lead to the mis-specification of the model and hence our ability to reveal and understand the factors that influence the concomitant adoption of these technologies will be obscured by the inconsistent estimates that will result.
