Comparative growth performance of male and female freshwater prawn Macrobrachium tenellum (Decapoda: Palaemonidae) cultured in tropical earthen ponds

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to determine the performance growth and yield of male and female Macrobrachium tenellum, cultured in earthen ponds. A total of 6 earthen ponds containing 1,400 ± 50.0 m2 of water and a depth of 0.85 m were used. A total of 19,600 juvenile M. tenellum were introduced into each pond to a stocking density of 14 org m-2. The final length, final weight, specific growth rate, weekly growth rate and yield presented significant differences (P < 0.05) between sexes, with the males exhibiting higher values of these indicators. The survival rate was higher in females (65.0%). The total yield obtained in this culture reached 1,603 kg ha-1.

Effect of beach seine height and mesh size on catch characteristics in the southern part of the Caspian Sea

Abstract

In this study, the influence of height and mesh size of beach seine net on the amount of fishing, length frequency and species composition of caught fish was examined. Two beach seine nets with 20 and 24 m heights and each net with 30 and 33 mm center part mesh size were used by two fishing cooperatives during 2008 and 2009. Rutilus frisii kutum and Mugil auratus were selected as a target fish in this study. Catch and biological data were measured and recorded. Results indicated that the height and mesh sizes used in the present study had significant effect on the catch characteristics in terms of amount of species, catch rates and species composition. Amount of catch was reduced in 24 m beach seine in comparison with 20 m height net both in 2008 and 2009. There were significant differences between fish caught by 30 and 33 mm mesh size net in 2008 and 2009. With an increase in size of mesh net from 30 to 33 mm, amount of R. frisii kutum catches increased but amount of M. auratus catches decreased. There was no any especial effect of height and mesh size on fish length. Amount of bycatch also increased in relation to net height from 20 to 24 m.

Cropping system analysis of two agro ecological zones of Southwestern Nigeria

Abstract

Proper understanding of cropping system within agro ecological zone is needed if adequate agricultural development programme will be planned. Therefore, the study looked into the cropping systems practiced by farmers in Southwestern Nigeria, described the cropping system and crop combination of farmers and also described and compared the socio-economic characteristics of farmers in the agro ecological zones studied. Ogun (derived savannah zone) and Osun States (forest zone) were purposively sampled while multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select 298 farmers in both States. Structured interview schedule consisting of open and close ended questionnaire in addition to focus group discussion was used to quantify the socio-economic status of the farmers. The average age of farmers in the two agro ecological zones were 45.00 ± 3.24 and 48.00 ± 2.98 for forest and derived savannah zones respectively. The average year of formal education of the farmers were 6.00 ± 2.74 years and 7.00 ± 2.11 years for the forest and derived savannah zones respectively. Also, the average farm size of the respondents was 0.52 ± 0.17 ha and 0.47 ± 0.13 ha for forest and derived savannah zones, respectively. There was a significant difference between the farm sizes of farmers in the two agro ecological zones (P ≤ 0.01). About 43.00 and 34.00% apiece of respondents in forest and derived savannah zones practiced arable plus permanent crop farming system. Mixed cropping was the most preferred cropping system in the forest zone while mixed cropping and crop rotation were the dominant cropping systems in the derived savannah zone. The study therefore, concluded that cereal/tuber crop combination is the most practiced among farmers in the two agro ecological zones in Southwestern Nigeria which may affect the final productivity of the available land as the two crops combination depletes soil nutrient.

Abstract

Tilapia has become one of the major species of aquatic products in close link with both domestic and international markets. Nowadays, the demand for fish and fisheries product has being exacerbated by the continued increase in human population the world over. This was due to the fact that global captured fishery was declining following the increased human exploitation for the commercially important fishes. Aquaculture or fish farming has become one of the solutions to maintaining the continuous supply of fish to commercial markets. China was by far the largest producer and exporter of tilapia products irrespective of some constraints such as soaring production costs, price and weather fluctuations. In the country, tilapia production was mostly carried out in the southern and southeastern coastal areas where subtropical conditions favored the growth and reproduction of the species. This paper reports on production and marketing systems of tilapia in China. Tilapia products produced in China had to pass through different channels before reaching their final consumers. Major international markets for tilapia products produced in China included among others, the United State, European Union and Russia. This work will guide potential investors and competitors for tilapia market in China and the world at large.

Challenges and opportunities of irrigated crop production in Gedeb river catchment: Machakel Woreda, East Gojjam Zone

Abstract

This study has investigated the socioeconomic, institutional and biophysical constraints, opportunities, to what extent irrigation could improve the income of households and create employment opportunities in irrigated crop production. The river catchment has different agro-ecology and socioeconomic situations; thus, it was classified as upper, middle and lower catchments. From Laytemamagn, Yewela and Gotu irrigation areas 35, 70 and 35 households sampled randomly, and respectively. Survey, participatory rural appraisal tools and secondary sources were employed to collect primary and secondary data. For data analysis, one way ANOVA, T-test, Chi-square test, and mean were employed. The study revealed irrigated land holding size of farmers in Yewela was greater than lower and upper which cause to diversify livelihood strategy of farmers in Laytemamagn than Gotu. Crop intensity in Laytemamagn and Yewela was 200%. The extension service was inadequate and not packaged. Credit service bureaucracy like group collateral was constrained to improve irrigated crop production. Water governance was done by water users but interference by the government bodies aggravated water use conflicts. Streams drying, percolation and seepage of water determined water availability. Irrigation created employment opportunity for household members and the rural community, and also improved income. Therefore, policy makers and development practitioners should develop policies and strategies based on the agroecology and socioeconomic settings of irrigation areas to alleviate the challenges, and consolidate the opportunities.

Determinants of women’s participation in microfinance services: empirical evidence from Rural Dire Dawa, Ethiopia

Abstract

This study intended to identify the potential determinants of women’s participation decision in microfinance services in Rural Dire Dawa, Ethiopia. 203 participants were selected and stratified into users (151) and non-users (52). The survey data was analyzed using descriptive statistics like chi-square test and T-test. Binary probit regression model was also fitted. The study revealed that amount of monthly saving; family size and landholding in hectares were the significant determinants of the women’s participation decisions on microfinance services. Therefore, the study concluded that creating an enabling land access institutions and capital asset accumulation were priority strategy for microfinance development.
