Necrophagous Arthropod Succession on Carrion in Yaoundé, Cameroon: Baseline Data for Central African Forensic Entomology

The first investigation of arthropods associated with carrion in Cameroon was carried out within the campus of the University of Yaounde I (Cameroon) from 17thJanuary, to 3rd April, 2006. Carcasses of rats (Rattus norvegicus Berkenhout, 1769 var WISTAR) were exposed for colonization by the local fauna of arthropods. The visiting and colonizing arthropods were collected daily during the study periods. 1980 arthropods of forensic importance belonging to 4 classes, 16 orders, 39 families and 3 subfamilies were identified. Among the insects assessed were Coleoptera: Cleridae, Curculionidae, Dermestidae, Histeridae, Mordellidae, Ptiliidae, Scarabaeidae, Silphidae, Staphylinidae (subfamily Tachyporinae), Trogidae; Dermaptera; Diptera: Anthomyiidae, Calliphoridae, Cecidomyiidae, Culicidae, Drosophilidae, Ephydridae, Fanniidae, Heleomyzidae, Lauxaniidae, Muscidae (subfamily Phaoniinae), Phoridae, Piophilidae, Sarcophagidae, Sciaridae, Sepsidae and Sphaeroceridae; Hemiptera: Aphididae, Anthocoridae, Cicadidae; Hymenoptera: Formicidae (subfamilies Myrmicinae (genera Pheidole, Tetramorium and Monomorium), Formicinae (Paratrechina longicornis and Oecophylla longinoda) and Dolichoderinae), Braconidae, Proctotrupidae, Scelionidae, Chalcididae; Lepidoptera: Tineidae; Psocoptera; and Thysanura. Other arthropods such as Arachneida and Myriapoda (Chilopoda and Diplopoda) were also collected. This study illustrates the diversity of the cadaver fauna in Cameroon and provides an approximation of the succession pattern of arthropods associated with carrion through a field experiment (77days).

Divergent Life-History Patterns: Evidence from Amphipods and Crayfish in Canadian Boreal Lakes

Principal components analysis was used to determine the degree of covariance among life-history traits in eight populations of the amphipod Hyalella azteca and four populations of the crayfish Orconectes virilis inhabiting Canadian boreal lakes. Assumptions of tightly coupled traits which vary unidimensionally as a single fixed unit or "tactic" are untenable for these organisms. Instead, populations are characterized by an independence among demographic traits which contradict some established beliefs in life-history trade-offs. The degree to which organisms display traits which can vary independently will influence the resulting phenotypic flexibility of life history responses to varying environmental conditions and may dictate ranges of latitudinal distribution.

Soil-Vegetation Relationships and Herbaceous Diversity in Lower Dachigam National Park, Kashmir Himalaya

Assessment of edaphic features and herbaceous diversity was evaluated in two different sites (Site I, forest) and (Site II, pastureland) in the lower Dachigam National Park of Kashmir, Himalaya. The study was done on seasonal basis and the results revealed higher trend for edaphic factors at Site I (moisture content, 31.22%; organic carbon, 4.33% and total nitrogen, 0.33%). However, soil temperature varied from (6 to 25°C) at Site I. pH showed acidic (5.41, Site I) to nearly neutral kind of nature (6.91, Site II). Diversity index (H′) showed higher trend during summer season at both sites. Dominance index showed inverse relationship to diversity index (H′) at both sites. Richness index depicted maximum value in spring (Site I) and summer (Site II). Equability or evenness index showed highest value at Site I (winter) and Site II (summer). Comparatively average values showed higher trend at Site I in Shannon diversity (Site I = 2.655, Site II = 2.435), richness index (Site I = 3.297, Site II = 2.652) and equability index (Site I = 0.915, Site II = 0.852). Dominant species based on frequency and density at Site I were Fragaria nubicola, Poa annua, Stipa sibirica and Trifolium pratense whereas Site II was dominated by Cynodon dactylon, Origanum vulgare, Salvia moorcroftiana and Thymus serphyllum. Maximum similarities between the two communities were recorded in spring and minimum in winter season. The study concluded that seasons have great influence on edaphic factors and species diversity. During spring and summer season an increase in species diversity was observed which declined as autumn and winter approached due to multitude of factors. The study recommended urgent need for seasonal monitoring of soil characteristics and plant diversity in the two selected sites.

Comparative study of the thermal behavior of the modeled kiln and the experimental kiln used for ceramics firing in northern Togo

This study consisted of validating a furnace model through a comparative analysis of simulation and experimental data. The gas kiln converted into a wood kiln was modeled using Comsol Multiphysics software and simulated based on Navier-Stokes equations. A metric study was conducted, as well as graphical representations, to evaluate the consistency between the simulation results and those of experimental measurements. The value of the bias measures the accuracy of a model and indicates the extent to which an estimation method tends to overestimate or underestimate reality. On the other hand, the confidence interval (CI) that we use helps to assess the reliability of the model's results. Based on the visual observation of the temperature profile over time, the simulated values seem to match the experimental ones. The comparative analysis of the experimental and simulated temperature profiles gives a bias value of -5.58 and a 95% confidence interval (CI) containing zero (0), which shows that there's no significant systemic bias. The RMSE value (33.63) and MAPE value (~7.35%) show an acceptable average error between the experiment and the simulation. A high R² value indicates a satisfactory correlation between the simulation and the experiment.

Gender Perspectives on Water Resource Management and Use among Pastoral Communities in Jijiga Zone's Harshin District

A study was conducted in Harshin district, Ethiopia to monitor the condition, use and management of water resources among Harshin pastoralists. For the study, three sub-districts (Kebles), Harshin, Medeweyin and Lanqerta, were selected. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected using household surveys, key informant interviews and focus group discussions. The study found that water supply in Harshin district is 100% surface water system through rain water harvesting in Birkas, and 63, 100 and 0% in Harshin, Medeweyin and Lanqerta, respectively, do not have Birkas. Besides, 76% of the respondents were not satisfied with the quality of drinking water. Moreover, existing water supply sources contamination is exacerbated by low latrine coverage of 96, 50 and 0% in Harshin, Lanqerta and Medeweyin, respectively. Among the respondents, only 55% cleaned their storage material once in a week, while 18% never cleaned. However, 100, 33 and 50% of the respondents in Harshin, Lanqerta and Medeweyin, respectively, purify the water. The study recommends that strong assistance is required in maintenance of birkas, construction of silt traps and separate drinking structure for livestock coupled by capacity building and awareness rising for cleaning the available scarce water.

Feasibility Study of Small-Scale Used Engine Oil Recycling in Mechanic Villages: Potentials and Assessment

Mechanic village should be adapted in developing countries rather than the city-wide auto mechanic workshop practice. This is suggested because developing countries are yet to enforce environmentally friendly automobile workshops and mechanic practice. If all automobile repair works in different cities are confined to mechanic villages, collection, preservation, recycling and reuse of spent oil will become effective. The goal is to stop the habit of disposing spent automobile oil on the ground, which results in excessive trace metal pollution of topsoil and insecurity of food products in the affected areas. Beside environmental quality, business and employment opportunities will improve. Small-scale refining or reprocessing of used oil in mechanic villages is lucrative and recycling plants are affordable and available. Cost benefit analysis indicate strong environmental benefits and annual turnover in excess of $2,234,375.00.
