Spatiotemporal Analysis of Land Use/Land Cover Changes in Ilorin Emirate (1986-2006) Using Landsat Data

This paper examines changes in land-use and land-cover pattern in Ilorin Emirate in Nigeria between 1986 and 2006. Landsat images of Ilorin Emirates at three epochs (1986, 2000 and 2006) were used. An administrative map of local governments in Kwara State and a land-use map of Ilorin were used as base maps. Global Mapper Software was used for the image enhancement; image classification was done with environment for visualizing images (ENVI) software and was later exported to the ArcGIS for further processing and analysis. The land consumption rate and land absorption coefficient was determined to aid the quantitative assessment of change. Subsequently, an attempt was made at projecting the observed land-use / land-cover for a period of 14 years ending at 2020. The result of the work shows a gradual growth in built-up land between 1986 and 2000 and this tends to grow more rapidly between 2000 and 2006. It was also observed that the change by 2020 may likely follow the trend observed in 2000 and 2006. It is recommended that the information from the results of this work should be use to optimally and effectively plan and manage the study area.

Physico-Chemically Treated Sand for Fluoride Removal from Water: An Equilibrium Investigation

In this study, heat and chemically treated sand was applied as an adsorbent for the removal of fluoride ions from aqueous solutions. The influence of different parameters such as calcination time, dosage, initial fluoride concentration and pH were evaluated. Results indicated that activated sand can be used for defluoridation of water. This can be achieved by coating sand with 10% Fe2O3, a calcination time of 3 h and pH around 6. The adsorption also increased with initial fluoride concentration and adsorbent dose. This study also showed that up to 90% of fluoride was adsorbed with 12 g of adsorbent in 50 ml of 10 mg/L fluoride solution. The sorption data were best described by the Freundlich isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 10.3 mg/g. According to these findings, physico-chemically modified sand has potential application as an adsorbent for fluoride ions removal.

Laterite-Based Fluoride Removal: Equilibrium Adsorption Studies on Acid-Treated Kenyan Lateritic Mineral

Adsorption of fluoride (F) ions from water using acid treated lateritic mineral (LM-1) from Kenya was studied by batch experiments. The effect of acid-treatment of adsorbent and change in temperature, mass of LM-1, pH and selected competing ions was evaluated. The adsorption process was strongly influenced by temperature, pH and adsorbent dosage. The percentage F removal increased the presence of the nitrate and the chlorate ions but decreased the presence of sulphates, chloride and phosphate ions. Adsorption isotherms were classified according to Giles’ classification and the adsorption data validated using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The data correlated to both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms although the data fit to the Freundlich model was somehow better. This showed that F adsorption onto LM-1 followed a mixed adsorption mechanism in which physisorption reactions involving intra-particle diffusion of F into mesoporous sites in LM-1 became increasingly important at higher concentrations and temperatures whereas ion-exchange mechanism involving surface OH- appear to dominate at low surface coverage in more alkaline conditions. With maximum adsorption capacity of 10.5 mg/g, LM-1 could be used to remove F water.

Predicting Meteorological Trends in Makurdi Using Artificial Neural Network Approach

The mean daily data for sunshine hours, maximum temperature, cloud cover and relative humidity data, were used to estimate monthly average global solar irradiation on a horizontal surface for Makurdi, Nigeria. The study used artificial neural networks (ANN) for the estimation. Results showed good agreement between the predicted and measured values of global solar irradiation. A correlation coefficient of 0.9982 was obtained with a maximum percentage error (MPE) of 0.8512 and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.0032. The comparison between the ANN and some existing empirical models showed the advantage of the ANN prediction model.

Occupational Health Concerns: Evaluating Ill-Health Behaviors of Lime Kiln Workers in Central India

In present study, an extensive health survey of 573 lime kiln workers of Maihar and Jhukehi region of Madhya Pradesh was done for impact assessment of occupational and environmental health hazards’ exposure on their health behavior. Various physical and physiological disorders of workers were screened with the cooperation of physicians and consultants. Among the observed health anomalies, eye disorders with 39.08% were ranked the highest, followed by respiratory disorders (20.06%), cardiovascular disorders (17.44%), skin disorders (15.70%), and gastrointestinal disorders (7.64%). Health illness was observed to increase with aging and length of hazard exposure.

Bioremediation of Irgalite Dye Using Immobilized Pseudomonas putida on Agricultural Waste-Derived Activated Carbon

A carbon sorbent derived from an agriculture waste, mustard straw was applied to study the removal of irgalite dye from aqueous solution. Comparative study on adsorption and simultaneous adsorption and biodegradation (+) of irgalite dye using Pseuodomonas putida (MTCC 1194) with activated carbon prepared from mustard straw showed removal of 83.3% higher SAB, with respect to adsorption (70%). For biodegradation of irgalite by P. putida at shake flask level Haldane's growth model fitted the best.
