Prevalence of bovine cysticercosis and age relationship at post-mortem in Nyagatare Slaughterhouse

Abstract 

Bovine cysticercosis caused by the larval stage of the human tapeworm Taenia saginata is a zoonotic disease of great public health significance especially in developing countries. The present study was conducted on 291 slaughtered cattle at Nyagatare slaughterhouse in Eastern Rwanda between December 2013 and April 2014 to determine prevalence of bovine cysticercosis and its associated risk factors. Nine out of the 291 meat carcasses examined at postmortem were found to be infected with the parasite (3%). The infestation rate was higher in adult cattle than young cattle, where the highest prevalence (66.7%) was detected in older cattle 5 years and above followed by the carcasses of middle aged cattle of 3-5 years. The infestation was lowest in carcasses of cattle of young age (2-3 years). There was no significant difference (p>0.05) between breeds of slaughtered cattle, where out of 9 infected animals, 5 were from local breed and 4 were from crosses breed. On the other hand, the infestation rate was higher in female than male carcasses, but there is no significant variation was observed between sexes of cattle (p> 0.05). The infestation was mainly found in the heart muscles (35%, n=9), followed by masseter muscles (29.5%, n=9), tongue muscles (29.5%, n=9) and diaphragm muscles (6%, n=9). However, there was no significant difference (p>0.05) in the distribution rates of the cysticerci in the various organs of the cattle slaughtered at the abattoir.

The roles of milk collection centers in milk distribution channels in Turkey: A case study of Antalya

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to discuss the factors affecting the milk collection centers role in assuring safe distribution channel in Antalya, Turkey. The research was based on the original data obtained by face to face interviews in 2007 in Antalya province. Under random sampling method, 82 milk farms which sell milk to milk collection centers and 74 farms which do not sell to milk collection centers were selected. The empirical (Logit) model was used for evaluating the factors which affect milk selling decisions to milk collection centers. According to results of the research, milk selling decisions were significantly affected by income and demographic characteristics. Empirical findings also showed that milk producers who receive milk incentive premiums were affected by the price level of milk incentive support. In this paper, a special emphasis is given to milk production distribution and safe distribution channels in Turkey.

Potential of farm-produced crop residues as protein sources for small-medium yielding dairy cows

Abstract

The nutritive value of fifteen crops and by-products were investigated in terms of the protein and energy value for rumen microbial protein synthesis using in-situ and mobile bag techniques. The sunflower feedstuffs and the cotton seed cake have low digested carbohydrates, which may limit optimum microbial protein synthesis, while forage legumes and cereals have higher digested carbo-hydrates (P< 0.05). Thus, one way of improving protein digestibility protein rich crops is to feed them with cereal crops. The cereal grains (maize, sorghum and pearl millet) and the forage legumes (groundnut and cowpea tops) showed a negative protein balance value, suggesting that nitrogen limited optimum microbial protein synthesis in relation to the available carbohydrates (P< 0.05). The nitrogen (N) content of the ram press sunflower cake (43 g/kg DM) was within the range of the N content found in the commercial dairy concentrates (32 - 57 g/kg DM). However, the N in the sunflower was more degradable in the rumen (92%) than that in the commercial dairy concentrate (P < 0.05). It can therefore, be concluded that the ram press sunflower cake is potential source of N for small-medium yielding dairy cows.

Study of the leucocytic formula of milk in the ewes of race ouled-djellal in the east of Algeria

Abstract

The study was carried out in a private ovine exploitation of Ben M’ Hidi (wilaya of El-Tarf), located at northeast of Algeria during the period going from June 2000 to May 2002. It related to 13 nursing ewes of race Ouled Djellal including six first calf cows and seven multipares. The diagnosis of the subclinic mammites was made according to California Mastitis Test (CMT) without bacteriological study. The counting of the somatic cells was carried out using an optical microscope on cell of Malassez and the various types of distinguished cells (polynuclear, macrophages, and lymphocytes). The results of the CMT made it possible to distinguish three ewes reached from subclinic mammites on a total of 13 examined ewes. The given leucocytic formula at the beginning of lactation in the healthy ewes showed a prevalence of the lymphocytes (44 to 47%); the rate the polymorphonuclear ones and macrophages varies from 21 to 25%. In the batch of the ewes reached, that is, subclinic mammites, the rate of lymphocytes range between 23 and 29%, the rate the polynuclear ones are 28 to 34 %; the macrophages represent the highest rate (40 to 47%).

Microbial quality of milk, produced by small scale farmers in a peri-urban area in South Africa

Abstract

Milking practices have improved with the development of technology and have transformed both small and large-scale production methods, however, some producers in rural and peri-urban areas have not adopted these new methods and hand milking is still the most frequently used method. This study was conducted in a typical South African peri-urban area, where the state of environmental health is still developing. The objectives were to determine the presence of contaminating organisms in the milk produced by the small-scale farmer as well as to make suggestions regarding the improvement of the milk quality to these farmers. By considering the total viable counts, coliforms and Escherichia coli, it was evident that undesirably high numbers of micro-organisms were ubiquitous, exceeding the SANS by far. Results furthermore indicate that the counts of the coliforms and E. coli also differed significantly during the summer and winter months. The high presence of E. coli found in the milk samples points to the fact that faecal contamination was unavoidable and unnoticed cow illnesses are likely to be one of the causes of the alarmingly high microbial counts. Traditional practices are likely to contribute to the contamination of the milk and proliferation of the micro-organisms.

Seroprevalence of Q fever in dairy cows in northeastern China

Abstract

A total of 564 serum samples were randomly collected from 29 farms located in the nine main dairying districts in China’s north-eastern Heilongjiang Province from 2009 to 2010, and the seroprevalence of antibodies against COXIELLA BURNETII was determined by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The average seroprevalence of C. BURNETII in dairy cattle was 10.1% (57/564). The seroprevalence of C. BURNETII in aborting cows (11.6%) was higher than that in non-aborting cows (5.1%). Dairy cows aged 3 years had the highest seroprevalence (20.5%), followed by dairy cows aged 4 years (14.3%). Dairy cows in their first pregnancy had the highest seroprevalence (25.8%). There was an apparent association between C. BURNETII seropositivity and abortion, age, and number of pregnancies (P < 0.05). The results of the present survey indicate that C. BURNETII infection in dairy cows is widespread in Heilongjiang Province, and it may be one of the most major causes of dairy cow abortion.
