Small animal dermatology: diagnosis and management of skin disorders

Abstract:

Small Animal Dermatology: Diagnosis and Management of Skin Disorders is a comprehensive review of the diagnosis and management of skin disorders in small animals. This article aims to provide an overview of the current understanding and approaches to diagnosing and treating various skin conditions in small animals, including dogs and cats.The field of small animal dermatology has evolved significantly over the years, with advancements in diagnostic techniques, treatment modalities, and understanding of the underlying pathophysiology of skin disorders. The diagnosis of skin disorders in small animals requires a systematic approach, including a detailed history, thorough physical examination, and appropriate diagnostic tests. Various diagnostic tools such as skin scrapings, cytology, fungal cultures, histopathology, and allergy testing are discussed in detail. Once a diagnosis is established, the management of skin disorders involves a multimodal approach that may include topical therapy, systemic medications, dietary modifications, and environmental management. The article provides an overview of commonly used topical therapies such as shampoos, sprays, ointments, and creams. It also discusses systemic medications including antibiotics, antifungals, corticosteroids, immunomodulatory drugs, and novel therapies such as monoclonal antibodies. In addition to conventional treatments, this article highlights the importance of client education and compliance in the successful management of small animal dermatological conditions. It emphasizes the need for regular follow-up visits to monitor treatment response and adjust therapy if necessary. Furthermore, it addresses the role of nutrition in maintaining healthy skin and coat in small animals.

Canine Behavior Problems: Understanding, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Abstract:

Canine behavior problems are common and can have a significant impact on the quality of life of dogs and their human families. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of canine behavior problems, including their understanding, diagnosis, and treatment. Canine behavior problems can be broadly classified into two categories: behavioral and psychological. Behavioral problems include barking, chewing, digging, and house soiling, while psychological problems include anxiety, fear, and aggression. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, environment, and socialization. To diagnose canine behavior problems, a thorough history and physical examination are essential. This includes observing the dog's behavior, interviewing the owner, and conducting a series of tests to rule out underlying medical conditions. Treatment for canine behavior problems depends on the specific problem and its underlying cause. Behavior modification techniques, such as positive reinforcement training and desensitization and counterconditioning, are often effective in addressing behavioral problems. Psychological problems may require medication, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), in addition to behavior modification techniques. In conclusion, canine behavior problems are complex and multifaceted, and their understanding, diagnosis, and treatment require a comprehensive approach. By using a combination of behavior modification techniques and medication, it is possible to effectively address these problems and improve the quality of life for dogs and their human families.
