Evaluation of IgM against Toxoplasma gondii in under marriage women and its pathogenicity relation with demographic factors

Abstract
Toxoplasmosis is an acute infectious disease with worldwide spread between human societies and domestic animals. This study has been carried out to determine the immunity against toxoplasma infection in women at the time of marriage counseling in Zahedan and its relation with conducted demographic factors. This descriptive - analytical study was conducted on 280 women referred to marriage counseling of central laboratory of Zahedan city from January 2010 to May 2010. Immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibody levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method and disease relationship was examined with place of residence, educational status, keeping cats at home, and keeping domestic animals and way of meat consumption (cooked or half-cooked) based on statistical tests. In this study the rate of positive cases of IgM was obtained as 5/4%. The results of this study showed no significant relationship between IgM positive cases and education, place of residency and maintenance of domestic animals at home, but significant relationship between IgM positive cases and maintenance of cats at home was observed. Thus, among those who kept cats at home, the rate of IgM antibody positive cases had increased. On the other hand those who had consumed half-cooked or raw meat, positive cases of antibodies increased and significant relationship between the two cases was observed. The results of this study indicated that 94/6% of referred women are negative for toxoplasma antibody and they are at risk of acquiring toxoplasmosis especially during pregnancy and its complications of congenital infections for their babies.

Laboratory evaluation of the entomopathogenic fungi

Abstract
In this study, the pathogenicity of five Iranian isolates of Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae was evaluated against adults of Callosobruchus maculatus adults by immersion bioassay method at 27 ± 1°C and 60 ± 5% R.H. under laboratory conditions. Cumulative mortality of the cowpea weevil at day 11 after treatment with B. bassiana isolates IRAN 187C, IRAN 429C, IRAN 441C and M. anisopliae isolates IRAN 715C and DEM I001 by conidial suspensions at low and high concentration ranged between 29.4 to 86.2, 9 to 88.3, 21.1 to 96.3, 24.8 to 84.4 and 20.9 to 80.9%, respectively. The LC50 and LT50 values for IRAN 187C, IRAN 429C, IRAN 441C, DEMI001 and IRAN 715C were 1.9×107, 9.8×106, 2.4×107, 2.6×108 and 1.2×108 conidia/ml and 7.8, 6.7, 7.2, 7.7 and 7.8 day, respectively. IRAN 441C of B. bassiana had the highest virulence against adult cowpea weevil because it had lower LC50 and LT 50 and caused the highest mortality (76%) in treatment by suspensions containing 1×108 conidia/ml. B. bassiana had higher virulence than M. anisopliae against adult of cowpea weevil.

Variation of abundance of Planctomycetes in typical aquatic environments of the China seas

Abstract
The CARD-FISH approach with the HRP labeled oligonucleotide probe Pla-46 was applied to investigate the abundance of Planctomycetes in the China seas. Our data subtly revealed that the abundance of Planctomycetes was varied from 0.23 to 20.53×104 cells/ml in 10 sampling sites of Yangtze River estuary and from 0.15 to 10.25×103 cells/ml in the 3 water depth profiles of the South China Sea (the maximum abundance found in the euphotic zones) respectively. Even though 20 times higher than in the water depth profiles of the oligotrophic South China Sea, the abundance of Planctomycetes in Yangtze River estuary is lower than that of in soils and sediments according to previous publications. To the best of our knowledge, the present work is the first systematic assessment and comparison of the abundance of Planctomycetes in typical aquatic environments. Our results showed that the variation of abundance of Planctomycetes differed with hydrological, physical, and chemical features, providing the patterns of the abundance in oligotrophic water, estuary, and water depth profiles; this is important information of their quantitative distribution, potential ecological roles.

Clinical features, epidemiology and outcomes of infective endocarditis at a general hospital in China: A 10-year survey

Abstract
This study retrospectively investigated the epidemiology, treatment and outcome of infective endocarditis (IE) in People's Liberation Army (PLA) General Hospital from 1997-2007. Totally, 65 cases were included. The results showed that bacteria were isolated from 63.08% of the IE cases. Staphylococcus was the main pathogen causing IE (43.9%), followed by Streptococcus (41.5%). Surgical treatment was performed for 81.5% (53/65) of the IE patients. The most common surgery was aortic valve replacement conducted for 58.18% of the IE patients. Six patients (9.23%) died during hospitalization. Antimicrobial agents including penicillin, vancomycin and quinolones were most frequently utilized. We concluded that early diagnosis, timely surgery and appropriate utilization of antibiotics can improve the prognosis of IE patients.

Antioxidative activity of lactic acid bacteria in yogurt

Abstract
The antioxidative effect of intact cells and cell-free extract of Lactobacillus casei subsp. casei SY13 and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus LJJ, isolated from the traditional yogurt, was evaluated by various antioxidant assays. The results showed that two Lactobacillus strains had good antioxidant capacity, inhibiting the peroxidation of linoleic acid by 62.95% and 66.16%. The cell-free extract showed excellent scavenging superoxide anion and hydroxyl radicals activity. The intact cells on 1,1-Diphenyl-2-Picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging ability and chelating ferrous ion capacity were superior to cell-free extract. The highest reducing activity was equivalent to 305 and 294 μM L-cysteine. This study suggests that two strains are high antioxidative bacterial strains. Antioxidative property of lactobacilli would be useful in the dairy manufacturing industry. They could beneficially affect the consumer by providing dietary source of antioxidants.

Expression of chitinase and chitin binding proteins (CBP’s) by Listeria monocytogenes J0161 in biofilm and Co-culture broths

Abstract
Listeria monocytogenes is a dreaded pathogen colonizes to form biofilm in the natural environments and in food processing facility. Biofilm state makes the bacterium resistant to antimicrobial agents. L. monocytogenes, an intracellular parasite also colonizes the mammalian epithelial cells in the gut. Chitinase and other chitinolytic proteins expressed by L. monocytogenes contribute to the colonization of the bacterium in the intestine. It has been reported that chitinase and chitin binding proteins are essential for attachment of the bacterium to the epithelial cells. In this study, we have pursued to analyze, if chitinase and chitin binding proteins play a role in biofilm formation and the expression of these proteins otherwise in a co-culture state. We report the expression pattern of these proteins, which supports our claim that chitinase and chitin binding proteins have a role to play in biofilm formation.
