Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Coastline Dynamics Using Digital Photogrammetry: A Study of Samsun, Turkey

Coastline and coastal areas are not only the supports for local economics based on fisheries and agriculture, but also, a source of food and energy, apart from offering diverse opportunities for recreation and tourism. Moreover, they provide protection to coastlines against storms and other meteorological perturbations. Coastline mapping and coastline change detection are critical for coastal resource management, coastal environmental protection and sustainable coastal development and planning. Changes in the shape of coastline may fundamentally affect the environment of the coastal zone. These may be caused by natural processes and human activities. The coastal areas of Turkey have been under an intensive restraint associated with a population press due to the internal and external touristic demands. Aerial photos with a medium spatial resolution and high resolution satellite imagery are ideal data sources for mapping coastal land use and monitoring their changes for a large area. This research is focused on the coastline monitoring and its potential change estimation by digital photogrammetry techniques using aerial data images at the eastern coasts of the Black Sea in Turkey. The study area includes the coastal zone located in Samsun, Turkey coasts. The aim of this study is to analyze coastline changes in 1935, 1972 and 2006 in Samsun, using aerial data images. Results show that digital photogrammetry, which is using the images as data source, are an effective approach for monitoring coastal land use status of large area, and over 95.32 ha areas were filled up along the coastal land between the 1935 - 1972 periods and over 70.74 ha areas were filled up along the coastal land between the 1972 - 2006 periods in the study area. Consequently, coastal land use change monitoring is necessary for coastal area planning in order to protect coastal areas from climate changes and other coastal processes. It is found that significant changes in land cover occurred during the study period.

Nutritional Profile and Reproductive Characteristics of the "Wesafu" Ecotype Cichlid in Epe Lagoon, Nigeria

A common cichlid of the Epe Lagoon, Lagos, Nigeria is an important food fish and viable candidate for culture in meeting the millennium goal and vision 2020 in the subregion. The intense fisheries of this ecotype also pose a conservation issue. The comparative protein contents of the cichlid fishes were 21.80, 18.34, 19.13, 18.71 and 18.08% for Wesafu, Sarotherodon galileaus, Sarotherodon melanotheron, Tilapia guineensis and Tilapia mariae, respectively. The highest percentage of protein was obtained for Wesafu. The results of the lipid determination showed that Wesafu had 0.9% lipid which is higher than others with T. guineensis having the least (0.4%) value for lipid. The result showed that all the fish studied belong to low oil category and therefore can be classified as lean fish. The major component of fish muscle is moisture. There was a progressive increase in the number of ripe eggs (absolute fecundity) from larger fish to smaller one. However, the relative fecundity followed a reverse order. Female Wesafu produce only a few hundreds to less than 2,000 eggs per spawn but inter-spawning period varied from 25 to 30 days in the present study. It was observed that this parameter (spawning frequency) was not affected by the weight of the broodstock. Although Wesafu could be seen as a commercially important fish species based on its credentials of deeper body, high economic value, in terms of price, white flesh and good taste, its aquaculture potential may be affected by its low fecundity. On the courtship behavior, Wesafu exhibits a characteristic golden yellow radiation during breeding period. During courtship, the fish display a characteristics kissing lifestyle. This appears different from that of Oreochromis niloticus which displays a poking courtship behavior with the female swimming in front while the male pokes the side. The result of this finding showed that of all the brooders in all hapas, only females that had eggs/hatchlings in their mouthparts. This comes to show that Wesafu probably belong to the genus, Oreochromis. Although this study has identified Wesafu as a probable member of the genus, Oreochromis, there is the need to identify the fish at a molecular level to see if it belongs to any of the known species of Oreochromis, or perhaps a simple strain.

Assessment of Gill Net Selectivity for Major Fish Species in Khartoum State, White Nile

Gill-net selectivity is a size and type of fish that caught depending upon specific mesh size of a used gill-net. In this study, four different mesh sizes (4, 6, 8 and 15 cm) were used in al-Kalakla Fishery (KF) and Jabel Awlia Dam Fishery (JADF) in the White Nile for studying their selectivity. The results of a catch per unit effort (CPUE) study showed that meshes 4 and 6 cm had higher productivity in fishing in KF than that in JADF; whereas, meshes 8 and 15 cm caught more fishes in JADF than in KF for the entire year. In KF, autumn season was the best for fishing with meshes 6 and 8 cm. In JADF, summer and autumn were the best for fishing by meshes 4 and 6 cm. The gill-nets of the study were highly selective for fish species according to their body size. Five fishes of small sizes (body depth at around 4 cm) as Tilapias (Oreochromis niloticus: Linnaeus, 1758; Tilapia zilli: Gervais, 1848; Sarotherodon galilaeus: Linnaeus, 1758), Kas (Hydrocynus forskali: Cuvier, 1819; Hydrocynus vittatus: Castelnau, 1861; Hydrocynus brevis: Günther, 1864), Nile Perch (Lates niloticus: Linnaeus, 1758), Dabis (Labeo vulgaris: Heckel, 1847) and Bayad (Bagrus bayad: Forsskål, 1775) were caught intensively by mesh of 4 cm during all seasons in both KF and JADF; whereas, meshes of 8 and 15 cm caught occasionally bigger fishes ranged between 8 to15 cm as Nile Perch and Bayad. The selectivity of these nets reflected over-fishing caused in the White Nile.

Optimizing Gillnet Mesh Size for Sustainable Fisheries Management in the Yeji Sector of Lake Volta

The study was conducted in Stratum VII (Yeji sector) of Lake Volta where commercial fishermen arbitrarily use gillnets, from June, 2009 to March, 2010. The catches of monofilament gillnets, the most dominant gear used in Stratum VII were investigated for dominant fish species composition and selectivity parameters. The study revealed the dominance of two fish species (Synodontis membranaceus and Schilbe mystus) which together contributed about 45% by number of gillnet catches. The optimum selection length (total length) of the 5 cm mesh size gillnet for S. membranaceus was 19.7 cm and S. mystus was 18.2 cm. The result showed that using monofilament gillnets with mesh sizes 3 and 5 cm could have increase pressure on juvenile population. The mean monthly catch for the study period was estimated to be in the range of 0.3961 × 10-3 – 3.2427 × 10-3 (standard deviation, δ=1003.9) metric tonnes. With reference to precautionary approach to fisheries management, a legal minimum mesh size of gillnets of 8 cm may be appropriate for conservation and sustainable exploitation in Stratum VII.

Assessment of Lead Levels in Lagos Lagoon Fish: Diversity and Human Health Implications

In this study, a total of eighteen fish species were recorded in the Lagos Lagoon, Nigeria during a one year survey. Among the animals species recorded, the following, Galeoides decadactylus, Dentex gibbosus, Elops lacerta, Scomber japonicus, Ethmalosa fimbriata, Lutjanus agennes, Caranx senegallus, Callinectes amnicola, Paeneus notialis and Mytilus edulis were considered to be abundant in the Lagos lagoon based on the frequency of occurrence in fishermen catches. The analysis of the lead content in muscles of the edible fisheries revealed that the animals accumulated measurable quantity of lead in the edible parts. The level of lead detected in most (12 out of 18 species) of the fisheries species were found to be lower than the daily allowable concentration of 2.0 µg/g standard recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Fishes species with high level of lead in their edible parts include Senegal jack, C. senegallus (2.188 µg/g), Bobo croaker, Pseudotolithus elongatus (2.024 µg/g), Cassava croaker, Pseudotolithus senegalensis (3.157 µg/g), crayfish, Penaeus notialis (25.46µg/g), edible mussel, Mytilus edulis (17.69 µg/g) and crab, Callinectes amnicola (10.19 µg/g). The mean levels of lead in Mytilus edulis, Penaeus notialis, and Callinectes amnicola collected from the Lagos lagoon were about 8 to 24 times higher than the WHO daily allowable standards for lead in sea foods and are therefore unsafe for human consumption. The need for regular monitoring of the levels of metals and other contaminants in edible fisheries resources and collaboration between environmental, health and food agencies to avert human tragedies due to lead accumulation are discussed.

Automated Fish Length Measurement via Digital Image Analysis: A Novel Methodology

Fish is an important source of protein in most countries in the world. The need to know the reproduction and population of fish is crucial for optimum exploitation of fish resources in maintaining the requirement of mankind in the future. In fisheries research, the length of a fish is the main parameter needed to identify fish reproduction, recruitment, growth and mortality. Current method used to acquire these length samples could be problematic as it is manually done; the fish need to be purchased in large quantities and then measuring one by one is time consuming and imprecise. The manual process may lead to overflowing cost. The fish length from digital images (FileDI) framework attempts to avoid this problem using a combination of optical theory and image processing techniques that automatically measures the length of the fish. It reduces cost, faster than previous method and yields accurate length measurement. Preliminary test has shown that the confident level of the FiLeDI framework accuracy is as high as 95% for fish length measurement.
