Utilizing Information and Communication Technology to Enhance Fisheries Industry Development in Malaysia

Abstract
There is a considerable relationship between information and communication technology (ICT), community and industry development. Abundance of previous research have tried to investigate ICT benefits for groups such as farmers, rural community, urban community, students, teacher and businessmen but yet there has been very little research on the roles of ICT can play for the development of the fisheries industry and the fishermen. Based on this problem statement, this paper aim to fulfill the three objectives determined which are to 1) to identify the most preferred ICT among the fishermen; 2) to identify the problems and obstacles faced by the fishermen in using ICT and 3) to determine the benefits that ICT can offer to the fishermen. This is a qualitative study; data was gained through four in-depth interviews guided by an interview guide with responsible agencies officers and fishermen. The questions served as a guide, but allowed respondents freedom and flexibility in their answers. ICT in this paper refer to global positioning system (GPS), sonar, wireless set, computer, internet and mobile phone. Based on the results gained, it can be concluded that GPS is the most preferred ICT among the fishermen. Among problems that need to be overcome to further encourage ICT usage among the fishermen are the negative attitude towards ICT usage, expensive cost, still depends on the traditional way, no exposure on ICT usage and ICT benefits, and no need for them to use the computer and the internet and increasing age. Based on the analyses done, it can be concluded that ICT offers a lot of benefits such as increasing socio-economic level of the fishermen, increase fishermen knowledge and skills on ICT, ease the communication process and enhance the safety aspects of the fishermen when they are on the sea. Based on the results gained it is recommended that the number of ICT seminar, workshop and course given to the fishermen should be doubled with the older fishermen should be included as one of the target groups while ICT subsidy for the fishermen can be given to the fishermen who need it.

Effects of Enhanced Water Flow on the Flow System and Wastewater Properties in Indian Sewage-Fed Fisheries

Abstract
In this study, we estimated the impact of enhanced flow on shallow wetlands that receive major effluent discharge from an adjoining metropolitan city. The local people use the shallow wetlands for pisciculture. Beginning in 1998, the population of the city began to rise and the amount of effluent discharge increased. The excess load is now a problem for the city engineers, and they plan to manage the sewage by increasing the area of the sewage network. The depth of the wetlands is also decreasing due to an increase in suspended solids. The quantity of the toxic load suspended in the discharge has increased the silt content, which has consequently further reduced the depth of the wetlands. The excess flow on low depth wetlands may cause overflows and destroy both the ecosystem and the livelihood of the local people. In this study, the pattern identification capability of neuro-genetic models was used to estimate the impact of the excess flow on sewage-fed wetlands. Two neural network models were created to estimate whether fisheries can accommodate the enhanced flow. According to the results of this study, the East Kolkata Wetlands, India can accommodate 1450 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage, if the average depth of water is increased to 1.18 m.

Reproductive Strategies and Gonadosomatic Index of Bathygobius soporator in the Estuarine Ecosystem of Badagry Creek

Abstract
A study was conducted in Badagry Creek in Lagos, Nigeria on food and feeding habits and reproduction of Frillfin goby (Bathygobius soporator). Data collected from the study intend to serve as a baseline for carrying out further study on the fishes and fisheries of this water body. B. soporator is one of the numerous and diverse fishes of the family Gobiidae which share certain similarities in their life histories. Gobies are among the most successful fishes. They are resident intertidal species which could be found in pools, rocky pools, lagoons, creeks and estuaries. Specimens were collected from the Badagry Creek via Oto-Awori Fish Jetty between January, 2008 and January, 2009. Foods and feeding habits and reproduction were studied in this creek. Seven groups of food items were encountered in the stomachs of the fish, viz; Crustaceans, Pisces, Insects, Detritus, Bivalves, unidentified food materials and Gastropods. The most eaten of these were the crustaceans contributing 34% by number and 38.30% by frequency of occurrence. The presence of other fish species in the stomachs explained the piscivorous habit while the unidentified food materials demonstrate its herbivorous character. Its predatory and carnivorous tendency was exhibited by the presence of insects, bivalves, crustaceans, and gastropods. Presence of sand grains was an indicator of its benthic nature. The specimens were classified as either male or female. Four hundred and seventy and five specimens representing 98.95 and 1.05% of total catch were classified as males and females, respectively giving 1 (male): 0.01 (female) sex ratio. This is significantly different (P>0.05) from the expected or theoretical one male:one female ratio and not in conformity with sex ratios that were reported for some fishes in the adjacent Ologe, Lagos, Lekki and Epe lagoons which favoured more females. The Gonadosomatic index (GSI) of this species varied from 0.00 to 2.89%, meaning less than 2.89% of the fish’s body mass was converted to gonads for reproduction. The pre-spawning and spawning stages of this species contributed 86.75 and 13.25% of the specimens, respectively. Post spawning stages were absent.

Optimizing Storage Conditions for Kutum (RUTILUS FRISII KUTUM) Ova: Effects of Duration and Temperature

Abtract
Effects of post-stripping oocyte ageing and temperature on egg viability rates were studied in kutum (RUTILUS FRISII KUTUM). Eggs were retained outside the ovarian cavity (IN VITRO storage) with ovarian fluid at various temperatures of 4, 10, 12 and 26°C. Stored ova of six female kutum were fertilized separately after 0 (control eggs fertilized prior to storage), 2, 4, 6, and 8 h post-stripping (HPS) using fresh and pooled sperm obtained from five males. Eyeing, hatching and eyed egg mortality rates were recorded as an index of egg viability. The results indicated that the maximum eyeing (87%) and hatching (75%) rates of eggs took place at 0 HPS followed by 8 HPS (> 80 and > 70%, respectively) at 4°C. As storage temperature increased, egg viability decreased to 80, 70 and 50% viable at 8 HPS at 4, 10 and 12°C, respectively. The eggs stored at 26°C lost their viability almost completely after 4 HPS. Eyed-egg mortality increased from 13% at 0 HPS to 48.2% and at 4 HPS, at 26°C. This study demonstrated that the IN VITRO storage method is an applicable effective fertilization technique that can be used for restocking programs of kutum within 8 h at temperatures ranging from 4 to 12°C.

Adaptation Strategies for Fish Farmers Facing Climate Change in Southwestern Nigeria

Abstract
Production systems and livelihoods in South Western Nigeria are at risk of climate variability and change; the fisheries sectors are no exception. The study examined the vulnerability of fish farmers in Ondo and Ekiti States of Nigeria to Climate change. A total of 120 respondents were purposively selected, interviewed and used for data analysis. Result indicated that the fish farmers in Ondo and Ekiti States witnessed unprecedented change in weather conditions as reflected in unusual excessive downpour of rain thus affecting their productivity through flooding. Most of these fish producers were young, mainly males, literates, and experienced fish farmers but relied mainly on personal savings and money borrowed from friends and relatives for fish farming. They practiced the extensive system of fish culture, utilizing local feeds and depended mainly on streams, rivers and rainfall. Fish production is concentrated in wet season. Most farm sizes were below 1 ha, and utilized earthen pond. About 65% experienced flooding with about 61.6% loosing within 3501 to 5000 fishes at a time. All categories of fishes were flooded. Majority of the fish farms were not insured by any insurance company while the few that were insured experienced untimely and inadequate compensation, also very few received compensation from the Government. Climate change resulted in low productivity, low income, starvation, poor health as well as poor standard of living of the respondents.
