The effects of water type on growth, survival and condition of Poecilia velifera

Abstract
Seven growth periods were completed on juvenile velifera (Poecilia velifera) for a period of 2 weeks to determine the optimal water type for best daily growth, food intake, feed conversion ratio, weight gain, survival and condition factor. Four water types (T1 = 25°C W1, T2 = 30°C W1, T3 = 25°C W2, T4 = 30°C W2) were used to grow up P. velifera for 105 days. In each aquarium, fifteen individuals were stocked and fed to satiation twice a day. Bulk weight of each group was measured 2 weeks interval. Growth rate did not increase with water temperature. Water quality made difference. Fish with W1 grew better than with W2. Fish in T1 had the best growth (daily growth 10.37 mg/day). Food intake was the highest in T1. Feed conversion ratio did not differ significantly among groups. Survival was low among 4 groups (T1, T2, T3, and T4 were 55.6, 53.3, 53.3, and 33.3%, respectively), but not significant. Condition factor was the best in T1 (1.61).

Antimicrobial potentials of indigenous Lactobacillus strains on gram-negative indicator bacterial species from Clarias gariepinus (Burchell.) microbial inhibition of fish-borne pathogens

Abstract
This study tries to evaluate the ability of L. fermentum LbFF4 isolated from Nigerian fermented food (fufu) and L. plantarum LbOG1 from a beverage (ogi), to inhibit some fish bacterial pathogens (Citrobacter, Enterobacter, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, Pseudomonas and Salmonella species) under in vitro conditions. Overall phenotypic antibiotic resistance of 124 Gram-negative bacterial isolates obtained from the gut contents of cat fish, Clarias gariepinus, using agar disc-diffusion method, indicated very high resistance to amoxicillin (88.8%), augmentin (85.1%), cotrimoxazole (80.6%), tetracycline (72.3%), gentamicin (61.9%) and nalidixic acid (57.5%). Multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) of 37.5 - 87.5% were also recorded. None of the forty four Lactobacillus strains (L. brevis, L. delbruekii, L. fermentum, L. plantarum and L. reuterii) isolated from the gut contents of C. gariepinus was inhibitory in vitro towards the Gram-negative bacterial species. However, L. fermentum LbFF4 and L. plantarum LbOG1 exhibited in vitro antibacterial activities against 41.1 and 47.6% of the Gram- negative bacterial species respectively. The susceptibility patterns of the indicator pathogens using the probiotic candidates were significant. The potential probiotic candidates were able to survive relatively low pH (3.5 - 5.5) and the fish bile. This study therefore, signifies that lactobacilli-based probiotic candidates from Nigerian fermented foods and beverages can serve as adjunct, inhibitory food-supplements in the control of bacterial fish-borne pathogens of C. gariepinus.

A survey for the presence of microcystins in aquaculture ponds in Zaria, Northern-Nigeria: Possible public health implication

Abstract
Aquaculture ponds in Zaria, Nigeria, were screened for the occurrence of the hepatotoxic microcystins using an ELISA method. Four genera of cyanobacteria (Microcystis, Nostoc, Planktothrix and Anabaena) were recorded from 11 aquaculture ponds screened. These cyanobacteria are generally known to produce microcystins and other bioactive substances. Six of the 11 aquaculture ponds had detectable concentrations of microcystins (ranging from 0.6 to 5.89 µg/L). This means that there is the possibility of bioaccumulation of microcystins in fish. The implication of this is that people that feed on contaminated fish from these ponds stand the risk of microcystins poisoning.

A review of the use of prebiotic in aquaculture for fish and shrimp

Abstract
It has been documented in a number of food animals that gastrointestinal bacteria play important roles in affecting the nutrition and health of the host organism. Thus, various means of altering the intestinal bacteria to achieve favorable effects such as better resistance to pathogens, enhancing growth and immune stimulation of the host organism have been investigated in various fish and shrimp. In this respect, probiotics and prebiotics are used in farm animal and for aquaculture, although the probiotic approach has been extensively used and advocated, viability after ingestion is difficult to guarantee and almost impossible to prove. The prebiotic concept dictates that non viable dietary components fortify certain components of the intestinal flora. This concept has the advantage that survival of the ingested ingredient through the upper gastrointestinal tract is not a prerequisite because it is indigenous bacterial genera that are targeted. Despite some positive effects prebiotic supplements on fish and crustaceans have been published however it seems such information for aquatic organism is inadequate. This paper will give short review of recent studies in which the effects of various prebiotics have been evaluated for potential application in the aquacultural production of fish and shrimp.

Marketing system of wild and hatchery reared fry of Penaeus monodon and its value chain in Bangladesh

Abstract
A study was conducted between January - August, 2006 concerning the Penaeus monodon fry marketing systems in Bangladesh based on the existing one and economic evaluation of marketing activities. In Bangladesh, P. monodon fry marketing of the wild and hatchery reared ones is almost exclusively handled by private entrepreneurs. The Government of Bangladesh has no command on this issue except the banning of wild fry catching. The market chain from fry catchers or fry producers to shrimp farmers passes through a number of intermediaries: fry faria, fry traders, fry commission agents and retailers. The existing marketing system is buyer-driven chains where producers that is shrimp hatchery owners have little ability to influence the price, on the other hand, wild fry catchers or small farias dependent on the dominant buyers or larger arathdars. The fry value chain is complex, different intermediaries of each node of the chain is an important actor to determine the fry value. The price differences between hatchery fry producer and the shrimp farmers was 250 BDT while wild fry catcher and shrimp farmers was 450 BDT. The farias, arathdars, traders and commission agents purchase P. monodon fry from the fry catchers, hatcheries and from one another and they trade in different volumes across different regions. Moreover, these agents usually run on a commission basis and charged 50 BDT per 1000 fry selling while the price was higher than 250 BDT per 1000 fry and charged 20 BDT while the fry price is lower that is, below 250 BDT per 1000 fry.

Abstract
Drought and water shortage have become a world-wide problem in recent years with the effect of global warming. Water-saving agriculture has become an inevitable direction of agronomical research, it has been developed from practices through agronomic water saving to engineering water saving and to the approaches in biological water-saving. The essence of biological water-saving should be the high-efficient use of water through biological ways, namely the “utilization and exploitation of physiological and genetic potentials of organisms so as to acquire more agricultural output and better economic and ecological benefits by utilizing smaller or same amounts of water or poor quality water”. As a systematic approach, biological water-saving should not only be applied with priority in crop production, but also in other aspects of agriculture and industries such as husbandry, aquaculture, landscaping, sewage water management, water and soil environmental conservations. Therefore, biological water-saving represents the human effort in the construction of a resource-saving and environmental-friendly society.
