Fishing Gear Selectivity and Catch Composition in the White Nile River: Implications for Sustainable Fisheries Management

This survey was conducted in Al-Kalakla Fishery (KF) and Jabel Awlia Dam Fishery (JADF) in the White Nile River, Khartoum state to identify the selective and non-selective fishing gear. The results showed the selective fishing gear represented by gill-nets and seine nets (beach nets) in both fisheries with clear variation in use. In KF, fixed nets were dominant (56%) in fishing and followed by drift net (33%), while cast nets were absent in this fishery. In JADF, fixed nets were dominant (63%) in use and followed by cast nets (14%). The average net length was 150 m with width 1.5 m. Non-selective fishing gear was luring gear represented by long-lines (Sareema and Jago). Average length of long-lines was 200 m with 200 hooks in both KF and JADF. Results showed selective tendency of particular mesh sizes of gill-nets in both KF and JADF towards some fish species as: Nile Perch (Lates niloticus L. 1758), Bayad (Bagrus bayad, Forskal, 1775), Kabarous (Bagrus docmak, Forskal, 1775), and large sizes of Dabis (Labeo niloticus, Forskal, 1775) were caught by fixed nets. Bulti (Tilapias), small sizes of Dabis (Labeo niloticus) and Gargur (Synodontis schall, Bloch and Schneider, 1801) were caught mostly by drift nets around breeding grounds and cast nets. Kas (Hydrocynus forskalii, Cuvier 1819), Kawara (Alestes dentex L. 1758) and Shilba (Schilbe intermedius, Ruppel, 1832) were caught by seine nets.

Species Composition and Biomass of Bycatch in Cutlassfish Trawl Fisheries of the Persian Gulf: Implications for Stock Assessment

Cutlassfish trawl fisheries have been used in the Persian Gulf, but very little information about species composition of the large rates of bycatch caught in this region is available. The data on total species composition of 40 hauls from vessels operating off the fishing grounds of Persian Gulf was collected from May 1st 2009 to 10th August 2010. From the estimated 952.3 tonnes of bycatch taken annually in the fishing grounds of cutlassfish, 39 species from 32 families were obtained which include: 30 teleost species with 88.3% of the total biomass (841.4 t) from the main composition of the catches and followed by 7 elasmobranchs with 8.3% (79.7 t) and 2 invertebrate with 3.3% (31.2 t) of the biomass. With 554.3 tonnes (58.2% of the total biomass), the major species in trawl bycatches were Nemipterus japonicas (234.1 t), Saurida tumbil (229.5) and Ilisha melastoma (90.5%). There was a significant difference in the total bycatch taken (biomass and number) from different depths. Some mean catch rates of the abundant species differed significantly between seasons which displayed dial differences in their catch values. This study provided the first comprehensive study of the species composition of cutlassfish trawl in fishing grounds of Bushehr waters in the Persian Gulf. The examination of the bycatch indicates the large impact on stocking density of commercial and non-commercial species in this region; which with respect to decline in stocking density of demersal fishes of Persian Gulf in recent years, has caused increasing concerns. The data collected in this study can be used in the quantitative assessments of fisheries pressure on bycatch stocks in the Persian Gulf.

Participatory Water Management and Rural Development: A Case Study of Small-Scale Water Resources Development Projects in Bangladesh

Agriculture and fisheries are dependent on water; hence, integrated approach in water management involving local stakeholders is the key to solve the food and water crisis for today and future. In Bangladesh, major small scale water resources development interventions are undertaken by Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) Bangladesh, under its Small Scale Water Resources Development Projects (SSWRDSP) to facilitate mainly the plant crop production and rural employment generation. The subproject level operational field is basically the floodplain area which is also the major natural fisheries resource base of the country. The research takes an eclectic approach, using both quantitative and qualitative methods in information gathering. It reviews relevant external secondary data sources and internal SSWRDSPs field data. The primary sources included extensive field visits, household survey for beneficiaries and Water Management Cooperative Association (WMCA) interviews of a specific sub-project that made significant impact in increasing cereal and fish productions. Transcripts of field visit, field notes and relevant literature are analyzed on the basis of themes, patterns and data of interrelationships among those that addressed the research goal. This paper describes the augmentation of crop and fish production and thus, rural socio-economic development complied with the participatory water management process prevailing in Bangladesh with its future prospect.

Impact of Storage Time and Temperature on the Viability of Stored Ova of Kutum (RUTILUS FRISII KUTUM) in Ovarian Fluid

Abstract
Effects of post-stripping oocyte ageing and temperature on egg viability rates were studied in kutum (RUTILUS FRISII KUTUM). Eggs were retained outside the ovarian cavity (IN VITRO storage) with ovarian fluid at various temperatures of 4, 10, 12 and 26°C. Stored ova of six female kutum were fertilized separately after 0 (control eggs fertilized prior to storage), 2, 4, 6, and 8 h post-stripping (HPS) using fresh and pooled sperm obtained from five males. Eyeing, hatching and eyed egg mortality rates were recorded as an index of egg viability. The results indicated that the maximum eyeing (87%) and hatching (75%) rates of eggs took place at 0 HPS followed by 8 HPS (> 80 and > 70%, respectively) at 4°C. As storage temperature increased, egg viability decreased to 80, 70 and 50% viable at 8 HPS at 4, 10 and 12°C, respectively. The eggs stored at 26°C lost their viability almost completely after 4 HPS. Eyed-egg mortality increased from 13% at 0 HPS to 48.2% and at 4 HPS, at 26°C. This study demonstrated that the IN VITRO storage method is an applicable effective fertilization technique that can be used for restocking programs of kutum within 8 h at temperatures ranging from 4 to 12°C.

Assessing the Vulnerability of Fish Farmers in Southwestern Nigeria in the Context of Climate Change

Abstract
Production systems and livelihoods in South Western Nigeria are at risk of climate variability and change; the fisheries sectors are no exception. The study examined the vulnerability of fish farmers in Ondo and Ekiti States of Nigeria to Climate change. A total of 120 respondents were purposively selected, interviewed and used for data analysis. Result indicated that the fish farmers in Ondo and Ekiti States witnessed unprecedented change in weather conditions as reflected in unusual excessive downpour of rain thus affecting their productivity through flooding. Most of these fish producers were young, mainly males, literates, and experienced fish farmers but relied mainly on personal savings and money borrowed from friends and relatives for fish farming. They practiced the extensive system of fish culture, utilizing local feeds and depended mainly on streams, rivers and rainfall. Fish production is concentrated in wet season. Most farm sizes were below 1 ha, and utilized earthen pond. About 65% experienced flooding with about 61.6% loosing within 3501 to 5000 fishes at a time. All categories of fishes were flooded. Majority of the fish farms were not insured by any insurance company while the few that were insured experienced untimely and inadequate compensation, also very few received compensation from the Government. Climate change resulted in low productivity, low income, starvation, poor health as well as poor standard of living of the respondents.

Exploring Karyological Characteristics of a Novel Cytotype of PUNTIUS CONCHONIUS (Hamilton, 1822) in Dal Lake, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India

Abstract
The karyotypic and cytological characteristics of Rosy barb, PUNTIUS CONCHONIUS (Hamilton, 1822) (cyprinidae) were investigated by examining metaphase chromosomes spreads from the anterior kidney following Thorgaard and Disney (1990). The fishes were obtained from the local fishermen and transported live to the Limnology and Fisheries Laboratory of Centre of Research for Development, University of Kashmir. Ten fish were injected intraperitoneally with two doses of phytohemagglutinin (PHA), 4 µg g-1body weight with a 20 h interval to induce cell division. After 8 h in 20°C water, the fish were injected intraperitoneally with colchicine 0.05% at 0.5 ml/50 g body weight to depress the cell division in the metaphase stage and left for 2 to 3 h before sacrificing. Kidney and gill epithelia were used for karyotype analysis. The diploid chromosome number of the fish was 2n = 50, consisting of 11 pairs of metacentric, 8 pairs of submetacentric and 6 pairs of telocentric chromosomes respectively. Centromeric index, arm ratio and Fundamental Number were determined as 0 to 50, 1-∞ and 88 respectively. No heteromorphic sex chromosomes were cytologically detected.
