Econometric analysis of the effects of water hyacinth on the fish catches in Lake Victoria, East Africa

Abstract
Lake Victoria is Africa’s most important source of inland fishery production. The lake serves as a source of human food and raw material for the fishmeal industry. Several challenges face the lake fishery, including the invasion of water hyacinth. This paper analyses the effects of the invasion of water hyacinth on fishing in Lake Victoria. A static catch per unit of effort functions were estimated using Schaefer models for Lake Victoria fisheries. The investigation on the trend in the lake’s stock during the period 1985 - 2005 focused particularly on the effect of the water hyacinth on fish stocks and fish catches coefficients. The results shows that the fish catch declined due to the growing abundance of water hyacinths. The impact of the hyacinth on the fish catch was greatest in the Kenya section of Lake Victoria.

An evaluation of Iken fishing strategy in tropical Lekki lagoon, Nigeria

Abstract
This paper presents the results of the investigations of the fish aggregating device which served as fisheries enhancement techniques for the improvement of the productivity of the Lekki Lagoon between March 2006 and February 2008. The performance of the floating Island (Iken fishery) depends on the size and the thickness. Chrysichythys nigrodigitatus contributed 25.51, 23.42 and 25.19% of the total weight of fish from floating Island with water hyacinth, Vossia sp and Cyperus sp dominant plant respectively. Tilapia guineensis contributed 17.0, 21.55 and 23.18% for water hyacinth, Vossia sp and Cyperus sp as dominant plant respectively. The fishing with acoustic yielded the highest catch by weight (47.22%) followed by fishing without acoustics (33.33%) with the least recorded in the open lagoon (19.44%). Management measures to maintain optimal production from Iken fishery should include the use of luxuriant water hyacinth which will reduce deforestation and erosion of the mangrove belt. The community managed resource enhancement should evolve from the existing traditional practices to meet both economic and social objectives as a major management strategy.

Abstract
This study is on the implementation of a semi-automatic labelling system (LS) of the Mediterranean Sea seafood harvest to address the increased need for seafood authentication and inherent difficulties of commonly used indirect techniques for estimating fisheries yield and fishing effort. Sensitive data required for anti-counterfeit policies, such as date and catch area, can be acquired and recorded on the label by user-friendly automated software that excludes any possible manipulation by the crew. Based on results obtained from the installation of the LS on bottom commercial trawlers, the system certified the origin of the seafood products and simultaneously provided, indirectly, geospatial fisheries yield and fishing effort data of the main exploited species.

Water pollution: A review of microbial quality and health concerns of water, sediment and fish in the aquatic ecosystem

Abstract
This paper reviewed aquatic ecosystem pollution with particular reference to pathogens in water, sediment and fish and their human health concerns. It highlighted the historical perspective of the relationship between microbes and humans regarding the “ranging war” between them, arising from the reckless exploitation of the biosphere by humans and the resultant “revolt” by microbes in the form of various pathogenic diseases that now plague mankind. Also highlighted are pathogens and diseases in both wild and cultured fish, citing reported cases in Nigeria to include Samonella, Shigella and Leptospira spp., Proteus vulgaris, Escherichia coli, Citrobacter diversus, Pseudomonas florescens, Aeromonas hydrophilla, Staphylococus aureus, Klebsiella aerogenes, Edwardsiella tarda and Flexibacter columnaris. Some human diseases contacted from contaminated/infected fish and fisheries’ products that have been reported in Nigeria were reported to include: food poisoning and gastroenteritis, diarrhea, bacillary dysentery, typhoid and paratyphoid, clonorchiasis and superficial wound infections and ulcers. In conclusion, the paper reviewed the modes of infection of water related and fish-borne diseases of human health concerns and recommended ways to ameliorate their infection and spread.

Size composition, growth, mortality and yield of Alectis alexandrinus (Geoffory Saint -Hilaire) in Bonny River, Niger Delta, Nigeria

Abstract
A twelve month study on the size composition, growth, mortality and yield of Alectis alexandrinus revealed a length range of 11.5 - 33.8 cm (standard length) . Employing the length frequency method in the FISAT II package gave the following results for the Von Bertanlanffy growth parameters: L = 35.23, K = 0.680, to = 0.3214 and = 2.926. The total mortality (Z) was 2.47, natural mortality (M) 1.39 and fishing mortality (F) 1.08.The relative biomass per recruit (knife edge selection) was Lc/ L = 0.05, E10 = 0.355 and E50 = 0.278. Although the exploitation rate (E) was 0.44 the Emax was 0.421 indicating moderate exploitation of the fish in Bonny River. There is room for increased effort in the fisheries.

Effect of industrial wastewater on total protein and the peroxidase activity in plants

Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of industrial wastewaters on protein and the peroxidase activity in Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., Capsicum annuum L., Phaseolus vulgaris L. and Vicia faba L. Industrial wastewaters were taken from Dardanel Fisheries Company, Tekel alcoholic drinks companies’ wastewater treatment plants and from one station which is located in the middle of the Sarıçay River. Wastewaters were applied to 6 weeks old plants with directly irrigation water. Physiological changes in the plants were observed by the means of measuring the protein and enzyme activity. The largest increase in protein was observed as 190.9 and 136.3% in V. faba treated with Sarıçay River water and Tekel wastewater, respectively. In P. vulgaris which was treated with Dardanel wastewater, the total protein amount increased by 84% compared to control plants. After the wastewater treatment, the peroxidase activity decreased in all plants. The largest peroxidase decrease was 80% in L. esculentum treated with Tekel wastewater. In P. vulgaris, peroxidase decreased by 59 and 51% when treated with Dardanel wastewater and Sarıçay River water, respectively. It was concluded that the increase in total protein amount and the decrease in peroxidase activity demonstrated the industrial wastewater’s blocking effects on plants defense systems.
