Oral manifestations in progressive systemic sclerosis: Case report

Abstract

Progressive systemic sclerosis is a chronic sclerotic disease which causes diffuse, increased deposition of extra cellular matrix in connective tissue with vascular abnormalities, resulting in tissue hypoxia. Aesthetic and facial dysfunctions are followed by important oral and facial manifestations. Most oral manifestations begin with tongue rigidity and facial skin changes. Bone resorption of mandibular angle and widening of periodontal ligament space on periapical radiographs are important radiological findings. Other systemic changes include the involvement of internal organs which leads to serious complications as well as disorders in the cardiac muscle and Raynaud´s phenomenon. The objective of this paper is to report a case of systemic sclerosis in patients with oral and facial manifestations of the disease. A brief review of the literature, focusing on dental alterations is also presented.

Abstract

Biopsy is an important surgical procedure done for the accurate diagnosis of many mucosal lesions. Thus, it is essential for every dentist to know its implications. This article explains the indications, contraindications and several points to be followed during biopsy procedure and the transportation of the specimen to the histopathological laboratory. Knowing these points would help to avoid the unnecessary delay, wrong diagnosis and will improve the understanding between the clinician and the pathologist.

In-office dental bleaching efficacy assessment in function of the light exposure regime by digital colorimetric reflectance spectroscopy

Abstract

In-office dental bleaching has been subject of several studies. Generally those studies quantify through visual analysis, the shade reduction of the teeth submitted to different bleaching protocols (light sources, bleaching agent concentrations and irradiation time). The objective of this work is the determination of the influence of four irradiation protocols on the obtainment of better aesthetic results using a colorimetric spectrophotometer that quantifies color changes in each situation imposed. Forty bovine incisors were selected in function of similar anatomic characteristics; a concentrated coffee solution was used to stain the teeth. A commercial spectrophotometer was used to measure the color changes during evolution of the experiment (stain and bleaching phases) and the obtained data was analyzed by the ANOVA test. The obtained data showed the evolution of teeth color during the staining period, as well as, the color reduction that each bleaching protocol achieved. Based on our findings it is possible to conclude that bleaching protocols with larger irradiation periods did not showed significant differences when compared with shorter irradiation protocols, in that way the use of protocols with 30 min or more of consecutive irradiation are not clinically justified and also can cause several side effects.

A comparative evaluation of a commercially available herbal and non-herbal dentifrice on dental plaque and gingivitis in children

Abstract

Gingivitis is common in all age groups and is thought to be a non-specific inflammatory reaction to a complex indigenous microbiota. Studies indicate that the prevalence of gingivitis increases during early teenage years. Supragingival plaque control is an effective method of controlling gingivitis. Undoubtedly, the most widely practiced form of oral hygiene is tooth brushing with a dentifrice. Recently, interest in natural-based products has increased. Most of the herbal products are known to have a variety of medicinal properties. A study was conducted to evaluate plaque and gingival status in children by daily supervised tooth-brushing for a period of 21 days with commercially available herbal dentifrice in comparison with non-herbal dentifrice. 30 children between ages 8 to 10 years with full complement of dentition were subjected to the study after scaling. Plaque and gingival scores were recorded throughout the course of the study at 0, 7 and 21 days .The mean scores were subjected to statistical analyses. There was significant reduction in plaque and gingival score from day 0 to the end of the study in both groups. Though herbal dentifrice showed more effectiveness than the non-herbal dentifrice on the reduction of gingival scores, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups.

An in vitro preliminary study on the growth inhibition of oral microflora by snake venom

Abstract

Oral health in most Brazilian municipalities is still a big challenge, particularly with regards to universalization, the equity of care and the high cost involved in restorative therapy. The demand to discover new natural products with antibacterial activity for the prevention of dental diseases, and perhaps with less health and financial impacts, would be very important to obtain an effective way to control the formation of a biofilm pathogenic and dental caries. The objective of this work is to study the feasibility of the use of the biotechnology venom, native from different snakes, to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans, which is the principal agent involved in dental caries. Our results showed that the venom of snakes Bothrops moojeni and Bothrops jararacussu inhibited the growth of S. mutans and the component responsible for the inhibition appears to be hydrogen peroxide. Although, it is still not fully conclusive, the tests already carried out show that snake venom is an important tool used to inhibit the growth of pathogens, especially those involved in caries diseases.

Abstract

The cysts that arise from odontogenic apparatus or those which have the ability to produce a lining similar to that of the tooth forming structures are referred to as odontogenic cyst. The cysts that are commonly considered to have neoplastic potential include dentigerous cysts, odontogenic keratocysts, calcifying odontogenic cysts, glandular odontogenic cysts and radicular cysts. The neoplastic component must be identified in the histopathology, since it is major factor in determining the diagnosis, treatment plan and prognosis.
