Hard dental tissue lesions in inhabitants of an industrial zone

Abstract
The aim of this epidemiological study was to determine the level of hard dental tissue lesions in an air-polluted environment, as well as to evaluate, as one of the factors, the impact of the environment on the occurrence of these lesions and their frequency. An epidemiological study was conducted in the city of Pancevo, which is is one of the most powerful industrial centers in Serbia. 160 patients of both sexes aged 20 years and more, were subjected to routine clinical examinations. The control group consisted of 160 patients of both sexes from Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. The Klein-Palmer DMFT system and SiC index were calculated in assessing the prevalence of dental caries. Also, teeth indicated for extraction, were analyzed for the presence of heavy metals. The average value of the DMFT index in the investigated group and in the control group was 20.41 and 16.52 respectively. A highly statistically significant difference (p=0.0024) was found in the group of patients aged 51 to 60 years, and extremely statistically significant difference (p=0.0005) in the group of patients aged over 60 years. SiC index values were also higher in all age groups from the investigated group than in the control group. In patients of all age groups from the investigated group, a statistically significantly higher value for lead concentration in extracted teeth than in patients from the control group was documented. Noncarious lesions were diagnosed in 44% patients from the investigated group and 24% patients from the control group. The most common lesions in patients from the investigated group were irregular (50%) and wedge-shaped (47%) defects. In patients from the control group a significantly higher percentage of irregular shaped defects (80%) was diagnosed compared to wedge-shaped defects (19%). The results of this study indicate that a polluted environment is one of the factors that cannot be ignored in hard dental tissue lesions etiology, but also requires confirmation by further comprehensive basic research.

Primary oral tuberculosis following dental extraction in a patient undergoing hemodialysis: A case report

Abstract
Primary oral tuberculosis after dental extraction is almost non-existent, and there is very little data on its clinical, pathological and radiological features. A 34 year-old Turkish man in good condition was treated with known chronic renal failure due to hypertension and who had been undergoing maintenance hemodialysis, 3 times a week for 3 months. He presented with swelling of the submental region following two teeth extractions diagnosed as teeth abscesses. Following the biopsies from the lesions, the histopathological findings, an analysis of the positive culture, demonstrated mycobacterial cord factor and polymerase chain reaction response to the Mycobacterium confirmed primary oral tuberculosis after dental extraction. The patient had no evidence of tuberculosis anywere else in his body. Medical and periodontal treatment were curative. This case highlights the importance of considering tuberculosis because of (1) the rarity of primary oral tuberculosis after dental extraction, (2), the presence of the Mycobacterium cord factor is considered as a virulence factor in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis, (3) the patient’s being young and in good condition displayed a favourable response to anti-tubercular and periodontal treatment.

Antibacterial influence of Omega diode laser exposure durations on Streptococcus mutans

Abstract
The oral cavity with plaque contained Streptococcus mutans and other bacteria considered to be the major aetiological agents of caries due to their presence in relatively high numbers in plaque, prior to the appearance of carious lesion and its ability to rapidly degrade carbohydrates and induce a tolerance to low level pH environments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the bactericidal effects of omega diode laser on S. mutans with intervals exposed time. S. mutans isolated from patients with high caries risk were exposed to different interval time (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 s) and then swabbed to the rabbit teeth. The bactericidal effect was shown in the exposure time of 15, 20 and 25 s without any curiosity sign on the rabbit teeth, the caries sign appeared on the low time exposed (5 and 10 s). A diode laser can eliminate the S. mutans when irradiated above 10 s.

Tooth mortality in khat and non khat chewer in Sana’a Yemen

Abstract
Many health problems of Yemen have been associated with khat. There is a wide spread belief that periodontal disease is more severe in khat chewers than non-chewers. The present investigation was designed to examine tooth mortality and the patterns of tooth loss in khat chewer and non- khat chewer in a selected population in Sana’a -Yemen. A total of 2506 individuals, 1216 males and 1290 females ranging in age from 15 to 64 years were examined. The status of every present permanent tooth was assessed. Individuals who chewed one or two times a week for five years were considered as khat chewer. Individuals with no khat chewing history or chewed less than 5 times in their lifetimes were considered as non-chewer. Female khat chewers had significantly higher teeth loss compared to other sub-groups, irrespective of whether they chewed khat or not. In the 15 to 24 age category, there was no significant difference between male khat and non- khat chewers. Female khat chewers had the highest teeth loss in this age group and it was significantly higher than any other sub-group in this age group. Male khat chewers also had significantly higher teeth loss compared to male non- khat chewers. Female khat chewers had a significantly more lower teeth loss than female non- khat chewers. Present study has shown that khat chewing is a one of the risk factors associated with teeth loss. Khat chewers had significantly higher tooth loss as compared to non khat-chewers. Female khat chewers had a significantly higher teeth loss compared to non- khat chewers (especially in age group 55 to 64). Male khat -chewers had significantly more lower teeth loss compared to other groups.

Animal experiment of periodontal tissue remodeling in application of mini-implant anchorage for incisor intrusion

Abstract
The aim of the present study is to observe the remodeling of periodontal tissue in application of mini-implant anchorage for incisor intrusion in dogs. Six adult male beagle dogs were used for the experiment. On the buccal site, a mini-implant was placed at the interalveolar septum between the maxillary second incisor and the third incisor on each side. The six maxillary incisors were connected together through the segmental wires and the individual bands were welded by brackets. An intrusive force (120 g) was applied by Ni-Ti coil spring on each side. An animal was sacrificed at the end of 0, 1, 3, 7, 14 and 30 days, respectively, after the activation. X-ray examination, HE staining and receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand (RANKL) immunohistochemistry staining were performed afterwards. Then, we found that the periodontal tissue in apical area and crest of ridge remodeled most actively. In addition, the periodontal tissue on the buccal and the lingual sides also remodeled. In conclusion, the incisor teeth were not only intruded vertically but also showed rotation of the crown towards the labial side and the root towards the palatal side, by using mini-implants as anchorage. Besides, if the force applied was excessively large, it would cause apical root resorption.

Periodontal health status and prevalence of root caries in Brazilian adults of Aracaju city

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and severity of periodontal disease and root caries in a Brazilian population, in the city of Aracaju, state of Sergipe. Two hundred subjects, age ranging from 20 - 60 years old, were recruited. The following full-mouth clinical parameters were evaluated: number of missing teeth, number of exposure root surfaces (gingival recession) and root caries, bleeding score, root caries index (RCI), and periodontal screening recording (PSR). The outcomes demonstrated a mean of 4.54% of missing teeth per patient, bleeding score of 29.72, 1.26 root caries, and a RCI of 9.21%. The most prevalent PSR score was 2 (for all the mandible sextants), 0 (2nd sextant), 1 (3rd sextant), and 3 (1st sextant). Based on theses results, it is concluded that the prevalence of periodontal disease and root caries occur with low frequency in the subjects evaluated.
