Evaluation performance of irrigation water management: A case study of Karacabey irrigation scheme in Turkey

Abstract
The objective of this study is to assess the performance of irrigation water management of the Bursa– Karacabey irrigation scheme (KIS) located in the western Turkey. The study was carried out in two stages. In the first stage, performance of irrigation water management was assessed using two physical and three financial performance indicators for six years during the period 2002–2007. According to the results, the physical performance indicators, which are average irrigation ratio and relative water supply, were found to be 61% and 0.77, respectively. Nevertheless, the financial performance indicators, which are the effectiveness of fee collection, the financial self sufficiency of fees collected to cover management, operating and maintenance budgets, and the staffing number per unit area were found as average 103%, 0.94 and 0.003 persons/ha, respectively. In the second stage, the irrigation water management was tested and assessed by the Logit model taking farmers perceptions concerning satisfaction with taking irrigation service. The probability of the satisfaction in irrigation fee policy and maintenance of irrigation and drainage canals was significant at 0.01 and 0.05 levels, respectively. Most of participants (80%) who use water from the KIS have been satisfied with taking service from the Karacabey Water Users’ Association. According to the research results, it may be claim that the management with regard to physical performance was negative; on the other hand, the management with regard to financial performance and water user satisfaction was positive.

Effect of kitchen wastewater irrigation on soil properties and growth of cucumber (Cucumis sativus)

Abstract
Scarcity of freshwater is becoming an increasing problem primarily in the arid and semi-arid regions of the world. The study was designed to investigate the effects of wastewater irrigation on soil properties and growth parameters of cucumber (Cucumis sativus) in southwestern Nigeria. The irrigation treatments consisted of kitchen wastewater, rainwater and groundwater in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) in three replications. Soil samples were collected in the 0 to 20 cm range, analyzed before irrigation application and after harvest according to USDA standard procedures while crop growth parameters were recorded 3, 5 and 7 weeks after planting. Soil pH decreased in all the soil samples after the different water applications, the lowest pH from kitchen wastewater. Electrical conductivity (EC) increased slightly in all soil samples, the highest EC value of 8.59 × 10-4 dS/m from groundwater irrigation. The sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) increased in all the irrigation treatments but was below the critical value of 13. The stem girth and leaf area were not significantly affected by water type (WT) during the three periods of evaluation but leaf numbers and plant length differ significantly at seven week of growth. Soil condition was not significantly impacted by the use of kitchen wastewater, however, appropriate wastewater treatment and water management practices have to be followed to remove the toxic elements which could be hazards to vegetable production and the environment.

INTRODUCTION
The 2012 Quivira Coalition conference was my second. I had come the year before to hear the likes of Christine Jones, Doug Weatherbee, Greg Judy, Sara Scherr, and David Montgomery; I came back to hear Allan Savory, Gabe Brown, Jill Clapperton and a group of other amazing speakers in 2012.
At this second conference, I noticed that one wiry, gravel-voiced woman shot up her hand after every speaker. She asked questions -- tough questions! -- or commented on their speech, and I could see that whoever was at the dais took the audience a little more seriously because she was there. I learned from her as well as from the scheduled speakers.
Luane Todd is simply a dynamo of agricultural wisdom and enthusiasm. She was a Texas city girl whose husband convinced her to move to a rundown Ozarks ranch to raise cattle in 1975. By the time he left 11 years later, she had fallen in love with the place – with the rolling wooded hills, the rhythms of nature, the animals and the promise of the grassland. She knew that if she was going to run the ranch successfully by herself, she had to find a better approach than that urged by the ag experts – a costly combination of tillage, seed and chemical purchases, and visits from the vet. Todd became an ecological pioneer, figuring out how to work with nature so that her land, animals, and cash flow thrived.
Now retired, she reads extensively and travels to conferences to build upon her own hard-won wisdom and pass it on to the next generation of farmers and ranchers.

Agriculture in Nigeria has greatly improved in the past few years because of the advent of technology and other necessary infrastructures. Initially, most Nigerian farmers merely engage in subsistence farming to provide food for their family while very little is made available in the market. Growth in agricultural output has no doubt been on the rise as farmers are stepping away from subsistence agriculture and embracing modern farming techniques - investing in large scale farming and ultimately increasing agricultural products
