Effectiveness of Protective Agents Against Maize Weevils (Sitophilus zeamais) and Larger Grain Borers (Prostphanus truncatus) in Stored Maize

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of natural available protectants to control S. zeamais and P. truncatus in stored maize grains. Results showed a reduction on live insects during maize storage in all protectants as opposed to no pesticides application. The pyrethrum flower powder and Actellic Super Dust were the most effective in killing both S. zeamais and P. truncatus followed by goat dung ash. Maize grains treated with goat dung ash indicated low weight loss, while maize grains treated with Sodium bicarbonate had high weight loss. It could be concluded that pyrethrum flower and goat dung ash are more effective in controlling S. zeamais and P. truncatus infestation. The efficacy of pyrethrum and goat dung as the powders in protecting stored maize grains against storage pests were validated in the present study. In general, all natural protectants used in this study have shown potentiality in the control P. truncatus and S. zeamais as they are more effective compared to no pesticide application treatment.

Influence of Culture Media and Explant Origin on the Micropropagation Efficiency of Dalbergia sissoo Roxb.: A Key Multipurpose Forest Species

Abstract

Attempts were made to evaluate the suitable explant and media type for micropropagation of Dalbergia sissoo from axillary bud explants of epicormic and coppice shoots origin. Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium and Woody Plant medium (WP) supplemented with N6 –benzyl adenine (BA) either alone or in combination with indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) were used for plantlet production. Auxilary buds of coppice shoots origin responded better than of epicormic shoot origin. Thus, the axillary buds of coppice shoot origin exhibited maximum response (84.6 %) on the medium with MS + 6.6 µM BA + 1.14 µM IAA where an average of 8.38 shoots/explant with 5.87 cm shoot length/shoot was recorded. MS medium was found to be superior to WP medium in terms of shoot numbers and shoot length. Rooting of in vitro shootlets was achieved on half strength MS medium supplemented with either IAA or indole-3-butyricacid (IBA). Rooting was best in the medium supplemented with 7.5 µM IBA. Rooted plantlets were acclimatized with 70 % survival rate.

The impact of livestock to community development  in Ekiti Central Local Government

Abstract

Livestock is an important source of food and income in rural areas for poor people. The present research study was conducted to estimate the impact of livestock to community development and poverty alleviation of people in Ekiti Central Local Government. A total of 200 livestock owners were selected using a multistage purposive sampling method for questionnaire interview. Descriptive and regression analyses were used to analyze anthropometrics data collected from 4 selected towns namely; Ado, Are, Afao and Ifaki Ekiti. Descriptive results indicated that 56.5% and 41.5% of the farmers kept livestock for home consumption and income generation. Benefits from livestock financially (63%), food (34%) and socially (3%). Regression analysis showed that there was significant effect of livestock production on income of livestock farmers. The limitation to four towns in the local government were due to scarcity of time, financial and other resources. Based on the results of this study, it is strongly suggested that livestock owners should look forward to the improvement of livestock production system in order to alleviate poverty in rural areas. The  government policy loan scheme should also be implemented to assist livestock owners in order to reduce poverty in the rural areas.

Copper distribution in different tissues of capoeta trutta (Heckel, 1843) from Munzur River, Turkey

Abstract

Heavy metal pollution of waters is a major environmental problem. Due to their toxicity, long persistence, bioaccumulative and nonbiodegradable properties in the food chain, heavy metals constitute a core group of aquatic pollutants. Capoeta trutta is an economically important fish and the object of significant commercial fishery in the Munzur River. Levels of Cu were measured in samples of the muscle, gill and liver tissues of C. trutta from Munzur River. In liver copper levels were higher at Station I (6.15 mg kg-1) polluted by domestic waste than Station II (5.48 mg kg-1) (P<0.05). The highest copper level (7.25 mg kg-1) was measured in muscle tissue at Station II. There was found no statically differences between stations in gill and muscle (P>0.05). It is suggested that ecological condition of freshwater fish and contamination levels in Munzur River must be regularly monitored.

Evaluation tools for agricultural development initiatives in Pacific Island economies

Abstract

This paper identifies and investigates high value agricultural products (HVAPs) related projects in the experiences of the Pacific islands developing countries (PIDCs). Based on analysis and evaluation of project reports, the paper identifies key factors and checklists which need to be evaluated in embarking on projects which affect the development of HVAPs related projects. The main elements of the proposed framework include external factors, level of integration of the value chain project to traditional agricultural system of the beneficiary country, market analysis, how holistic is the approach and linkages of the projects to other projects. The paper provokes thoughts for the development of a holistic framework to analyse HVAPs projects in the PIDC in particular and developing countries in general.

Aromatics variation in page mandarin floral and leaf tissues due to rootstock diversity

Abstract

The effects of rootstock on the volatile flavor components of page mandarin flower and leaf were investigated in this study. Flower flavor components were extracted by using ultrasound(US) water bath apparatus and eluted by n-pentane: diethylether(1:2) solvent and then analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. Leaf flavor components were extracted by using water distillation method and eluted by using n-hexane solvent and then analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. Fifty-two flower components and, sixty-nine leaf components including: aldehydes, alcohols, esters, ketones, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and other components were identified and quantified. The major flavor components were linalool, limonene, ocimene, α -pinene, sabinene and myrcene. The flower and leaf oil from plants grown on Swingle Citrumelo and Yuzu showed the highest content of aldehydes. Since the aldehyde content of citrus oil is considered one of the more important indicators of high quality, rootstock apparently has a profound influence on Page mandarin flower and leaf oil quality.
