Boosting barley (Hordium vulgare, L.) production through crop technology demonstration in transitional plain of inland drainage zone of Rajasthan (India)

Abstract

Barley (Hordium vulgare, L.) is cultivated since ancient times for several purposes like food grain, feed and fodder for cattle and breweries. Non adoption of recommended package of practices and improved varieties are major causes of low productivity of barley in the transitional plane of inland drainage zone of Rajasthan state. The present study was undertaken to assess the efficacy of recommended package of practices to augment yields on farmers’ fields in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan during 2009-10 to 2011-12. The improved cultivation package comprises high yielding variety, application of fertilizer and micronutrient, control of insect-pest and diseases by use of insecticide and fungicide at economic threshold level. The findings revealed that the adoption of the improved cultivation package improves yields by 13.89 to 21.66 % as compared to conventional cultivation practices. Technology and extension gap in cultivar RD 2552 was 8.50 and 5.10 q/ha and in RD 2660 was 6.50 and 8.10 q/ha, respectively. Yield gaps can be further minimized by crop technology demonstration. Data on technology index reduced from 18.00 % in 2009-10 to 12.50 % in 2011-12 exhibited the feasibility of the technology demonstration.

Abstract

Clinical pathology is collection of sample for analytical work performed in a clinical laboratory through specific pathology fields and it includes clinical chemistry, hematology and microbiology. It consists of simple blood test, microbiological tests as well as other fluid tests to detect, diagnose and monitor various disease related conditions. Entire procedure may involve a routine health check, a diagnostic test aimed at detecting a particular condition or disease and follow-up tests to evaluate effectiveness of the treatment for a condition, which are often a series of easy to administer, convenient tests conducted at special laboratories to deliver quick and fairly accurate results.

Optimum concentrate supplement to sorghum straw to reduce live weight loss in calves during summer season in Sudan

Abstract

A study was conducted in Rahad Agricultural Corporation with the objective to find the optimum level of concentrate that can offset live weight (lwt) loss during summer. Thirty Kenana x Friesian 1-1.5 year old calves were allocated to five levels of concentrate supplement (CS); 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 % of animal body weight and CS 100%. In treatment groups, where CS was proportionate to body weight, ad libitum sorghum straw was offered as basal roughage. Feed DM, OM, CP and CF were evaluated. Rumen fluid was analyzed for pH, NH3 and protozoal count. In blood, haemoglobin (Hb) and heamatocrit (PCV%) was examined. The results showed that the digestibility of DM, OM, CP, CF and total dry matter intake (DMI) increased significantly with increasing level of CS in the ration. Rumen fluid pH was not affected by supplementation but was significantly decreased (P0<05) in exclusively concentrate fed calves (100% CS). Rumen NH3 was not affected by the level of supplement except in 100% CS feeding. Total protozoal count was unaffected by the different levels of CS. Both Hb and PCV% were significantly (p<0.01) increased with higher levels of CS. Optimum levels of CS was found at 0.34% of animal body weight. It could be concluded that CS of 0.5 % of body weight of calves improved feed digestibility, blood Hb and PCV% and prevented live weight loss. Increased CS levels of 1% and 1.5% increased significantly (P<0.1) MR compared to full concentrate feeding.

Status of specific diseases in Bovine of Himachal Pradesh

Abstract

The present study was carried out to find out the morbidity and mortality rates of specific diseases in bovine under the village condition in Himachal Pradesh state. A total of 540 livestock owners constitute the ultimate sample from twelve veterinary hospitals and thirty six villages for the study. The sampling scheme followed in the present study was Stratified three-stage random sampling. The result showed that mastitis has highest morbidity rate 4.18% followed by EBH 0.68%, FMD 0.63%, and warts 0.57% and Actinomycosis 0.26%. The mortality rate was maximum for HS and rabies each 0.104% followed by EBH 0.05%. Mastitis has highest number of cases in zone (I) and zone (II) (each 1.18%) and EBH (0.68%) were only recorded in zone IV. Warts cases (0.36%) were maximum in zone (III) and Actinomycosis (0.21%) were maximum in zone (I) HS and Rabies (each 0.1%) were only found in zone.

Assessment of fish products demand in some water bodies of Oromia, Ethiopia

Abstract

The study was conducted to prioritize the fish products per water bodies and to know the supply potential of the fish products in six different Oromia water bodies. As methodology PRA was conducted to accomplish the experiment. Multistage sampling technique was employed during data collection by using structured questioner.  Different fish specimens was collected and processed in different fish products and demand was analyzed using five (5) point hedonic scale. Demand of fish products was inelastic in Ethiopian fasting season on the other hand fish products was supply elastic. Demand for fish products is higher in fasting season but supply is lower in comparison with non-fasting season. The price of fish per kg was higher in fasting season than when not fasting; which is not true of "demand law". At Zeway  lake and Koka reservoir smoked, filleted and dried was preferred successively but gutted and whole fish was not preferred, Langano lake filleted and dried fish was preferred and gutted, smoked and whole fish was not preferred, Beseka lake and Melka wakena filleted and smoked fish was preferred and dried, gutted and whole fish was not preferred, Gilgel gibe reservoir filleted, whole fish and dried fish was preferred and  smoked and gutted fish was not preferred depending on five point hedonic scale.

Evaluation of different formulated post emergence herbicide on the weed control efficiency and performance of transplanted lowland rice (oryza sativa) at Badeggi and Yandev

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted during the raining season of 2010 at the experimental field of National Cereals Research Institute, Yandev and Badeggi to evaluate post emergence herbicides on control efficiency and performance of transplanted lowland rice. The treatments were Orizo plus at 4 litres per hectare,  2.4 kg propanil plus 375 ml MCPA /ha, 2.4 kg propanil plus 200 ml MCPA/ha, 2.4 kg propanil plus 120 g condax, applied at 3 weeks after planting. 1.6 kg propanil plus 250 ml/ha MCPA was applied at 3 and 5 weeks after planting.  Also 240 g condax per hectare was applied at planting and 3 weeks after planting and Butaclor 4 L/ha at planting.  Other treatments included hand weeding at 3 and 6 weeks after planting and a weedy check as control. The experiments were laid out in a Complete Randomized Block Design and replicated thrice. The variety of rice used was FARO 52 (WITA 4). Application of 2.4 kg propanil plus 375 ml MCPA /ha, 2.4 kg propanil plus 200 ml MCPA/ha drastically reduced both weed density and dry matter at both location throughout the sampling periods. Higher weed control efficiency was also recorded with application of 2.4 kg propanil plus 375 ml MCPA /ha and 2.4 kg propanil plus 200 ml MCPA/ha.  Rice yield and yield components were superior with the application of 2.4 kg propanil plus 375 ml MCPA /ha and 2.4 kg propanil plus 200 ml MCPA/ha.
