First report of leaf blight of Bakul (Mimusops elengi Linn) caused by Pestalotiopsis clavispora (G.F. Atk.) steyaert in India

Abstract

Pestalotiopsis clavispora (G.F. Atk.) Steyaert was recorded for the first time on Mimusops elengi trees in the University of Mysore campus during 2015-2016. The fungus was isolated from the wilted plant parts and subsequent re-inoculation of the same to healthy plants and its pathogenicity confirmed. Pathogenicity tests showed that Pestalotiopsis clavispora could infect M. elengi, which developed the same symptoms under artificial inoculation conditions to that observed in the field. The fungus was identified based on morphological and culture characteristics as Pestalotiopsis clavispora. Identifications were confirmed using comparisons of DNA sequences of internal transcribed spacers (ITS) regions 1 and 4. This is the first report of Mimusops elengi leaf blight disease caused by P. clavispora.

Physiological and nutrition requirements for the determination of Alternaria helianthi in sunflower

Abstract

Ten isolates of Alternaria helianthi were collected from different sunflower growing areas of Tamil Nadu. Most isolates preferred pH levels of 6.96-7.15, temperature 29.22-33.93°C and incubation time of 24 h. The nutritional studies were taken up to know the best source of carbon and nitrogen required for the growth and sporulation of the fungus. Six different carbon sources tried, Glucose was found to be the best source of carbon for the growth and the seven different nitrogen sources tested, ammonium nitrate supported good growth and sporulation.

Compatibility nature of Azoxystrobin 25 SC with Pseudomonas fluorescens and Bacillus subtilis on chilli Plants

Abstract

An experiment was conducted to know the compatibility of Azoxystrobin 25 SC with biocontrol agents by poisoned food technique and turbidity method and with insecticides by emulsion stability test. The biological compatibility was done under glass house condition to find the percent injury. The compatibility showed that Pseudomonas fluorescens and B. subtilis were compatible with Azoxystrobin 25 SC at 5, 10, 50, 100 and 250 ppm, concentration. The physical compatibility studies showed that Azoxystrobin 25 SC was highly compatible commonly used with insecticides viz., Profenphos, Dichlorvos, Monocrotophos, Carbaryl, Dimethoate, Triazophos and Quinalphos. The results from the biological compatibility revealed that insecticides, Dichlorovos and Profenphos were found to be less compatible with Azoxystrobin 25 SC when compared to other insecticides.

Effect of seed treatments on disease incidence, seed quality, seed yield, stick yield and fibre yield following line sowing method in CVL-1 variety

Abstract

The present study was conducted to clarify the jute seed storage sustainability using biological agent. The experiments were conducted in the field of JAES and KRS of BJRI and conducted during the period April 2012 to January 2013. Two different seed treatments viz. Provax-200 and BAU- Biofungicide and Seeds having moisture content 9.5% were used for the experiment. Disease incidence occurred lowest at JAES and KRS with BAU- Biofungicide treated seeds were used. BAU- Biofungicide and Provax-200 showed superior means for controlling field fungi with higher seed yield and better improvement of seed quality. The highest disease incidences 20.32% and lowest disease incidences 6.37% were recorded under control and BAU- Biofungicide treated seeds, respectively. Negative relations between disease severity and seed yield, fibre yield and stick yield were observed in seed treatments with BAU- Biofungicide and Provax-200. The highest seed yield (619.58 kg/ha), fibre yield (4.79 ton/ha) and stick yield (10.54 ton/ha) were recorded under BAU- Biofungicide treated seeds and lowest seed yield (461.81 kg/ha), fibre yield (2.87 ton/ha) and stick yield (6.08 ton/ha) were recorded under control treatment. Thus, seed treatment by BAU- Biofungicide enhanced the quality and yield of the jute seed and fibre in the field.

Effects of the Pathogen in Meloidogyne incognita eggs on growth of nematode and sugarbeet reproduction under conservatory conditions

Abstract

The impact of three levels of Meloidogyne incognita eggs, that is, 1000, 2000 and 3000 eggs/ plant on plant growth parameters of sugarbeet cv. Nejma and its development and reproduction under greenhouse conditions at 17 ± 5°C was studied. Results indicated that reduction percentage of sugarbeet growth parameters were greatly affected, where the marginal effect was more pronounced on roots than shoots. Moreover, as the inoculation level increased from 1000 up to 3000 eggs of M. incognita /plant, the percentage reduction of plant growth parameters increased, where the highest values were recorded to be 48.97 and 24.18% by 3000 eggs/ plant for shoot dry and whole plant fresh weights, whereas, their lowest values of 30.93 and 4.05% resulted by inoculation level of 1000 eggs/ plant for the same plant growth criteria, respectively. Moreover, the highest rate of nematode reproduction on sugarbeet plants cv. Nejma was recorded by the level of 2000 eggs per plant with value of 1.05 whereas the lowest ones of the same criterion resulted by the levels of 3000 or 1000 eggs per plant that were 0.85 or 0.84, respectively. M. incognita infection to sugar beet plants cv. Nejma at the three levels of egg inoculation obviously reduced N, P, K and total chlorophyll content on leaves of sugarbeet with values of 9.9% (N), 18.5% (P), 8.8% (K), 1.58% (chlorophyll) and 20.0% (N), 27.4% (P), 18.4% (K) and 5.9% (chlorophyll) by 1000 and 3000 eggs/ plant, respectively compared to the uninoculated plant.

Screening major diseases of safflower over elite material under field conditions

Abstract

A field experiment with three replications was conducted at the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on oilseeds at Marathwada Agricultural University (MAU), Parbhani, Maharashtra on the screening of different elite material against major diseases. Significant differences in resistance to all the diseases were found in the elite material tested. Among the 46 elite lines, 21 and 33 elite lines registered highly resistant reaction against Alternaria leaf spot and to root rot, respectively while 15 lines registered resistant reaction to wilt. This study concludes that screening elite lines for resistance to diseases is an important step in developing varieties/hybrids with improved resistance to different diseases.
