Antifungal Potential of Compost Extracts Against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. albedinis in Date Palm

Bayoud, vascular wilt of date palm caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. albedinis (Foa), is widely distributed in all date palm growing regions of Morocco. It is the most serious disease of the date palm. Compost is recognized for their ability to improve soil characteristics and to protect the crops against biotic and abiotic stress. In this experiment, in vitro effects of different concentrations of sterilized and unsterilized compost extract on the growth of F. oxysporum f. sp. albedinis were evaluated. All concentration of unsterilized compost extract decreased radial growth of Foa. In fact, fungal radial growth inhibition ranged from 20 to 97%. Higher antifungal activity was noted in 30 and 40% concentration (more than 93%). Nevertheless, sterile compost extract inhibited mycelia growth only for the 40% concentration with 18% fungal growth inhibition, while lower concentrations were not effective.

Inhibition of Yeast Proliferation and Pathogenesis by Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

Studies on yeasts exposed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) as potential anti-mitochondrial antifungals. In this study, various NSAIDs were tested for antifungal activity on the human yeast pathogens Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans. Our results suggest a dual action for these drugs, that is, antifungal as well as anti-inflammatory. These results could be useful in the treatment of fungal infections.

Prevalence of dengue fever in non-malaria fever syndromes at Angré University Hospital, Abidjan

Introduction: Côte d'Ivoire has an ecology favourable to arthropods and reports a high burden of acute febrile illnesses. However, the contribution of arbovirus infections to the burden of acute febrile illnesses is poorly understood. Given this situation, the present study was conducted to determine the level of dengue circulation in non-malaria febrile syndromes. Method: This prospective study was conducted from June to December 2021. Serum samples were collected from non-malaria fever patients after obtaining their consent at the Angré University Hospital laboratory. Dengue virus detection was performed using several biological diagnostic tools: serological tests, antigen tests and RT-PCR. Results: A total of 72 febrile patients agreed to participate in the study, with a majority of male patients (51%) and a predominance of patients aged between 21 and 31 (25%). There was a high level of ignorance about dengue fever (74%) and more than 98% had never seen a case among their friends and family. In addition, 78% said they did not use impregnated mosquito nets and 87.5% reported regular exposure to mosquito bites, indicating a high level of vulnerability. Biologically, a seroprevalence of 17% (12/72) was detected, solely through the presence of IgG antibodies, suggesting past infections. However, no NS1 antigen or IgM antibodies were detected, and RT-PCR was negative for all samples. Conclusion: Dengue circulates at low levels among non-malaria fever syndromes, with no viraemia detected at the time of the study.

In Vitro Evaluation of Essential Oils, Salts, and Antioxidant Acids Against Pathogenic Fungi Causing Postharvest Diseases in Bananas

In vitro clove essential oil (1.0%), sodium carbonate (2.0%) and sorbic, salycilic and propinic acids (0.5%) completely (100%) inhibited mycelial linear growth of Colletotrichum musae and Fusarium moniliforme, which is the cause of postharvest diseases in banana fruits. In vivo different application methods, that is, spray, soaking and dusting were tested on crown rot, neck rot, finger rot and flower end rot under artificial infestation with causal pathogens. Soaking method significantly reduced major postharvest diseases incidence in banana fruits than spray and dusting treatments. Soaking banana fruits in clove suspension (2%) and sodium carbonate (4.0%) was the best treatment that completely inhibited (100%) crown rot and flower end rot diseases and significantly reduced finger rot and neck rot diseases. So, clove oil and sodium carbonate were the most promising agents for controlling major postharvest diseases of banana fruits as eco-friendly and alternative synthetic fungicides.

Prevalence of Rheumatoid Factor and Hyperuricemia in Healthy Elderly Population: A Cross-Sectional Study in Khartoum, Sudan

Aim of the study: This study aimed to determine rheumatoid factor and serum uric acid among Asymptomatic elderly individuals above 60 years of age. Methods: A total number of 103 individuals were screened for rheumatoid factor (RF), uric acid (UA) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) by using slide agglutination, enzymatic method and westergren tubes, respectively. Result: Of the 103 individuals tested, 10 (9.7%) were rheumatoid factor reactive most of them 6/10 (60%) were females. Twenty-two participants (21%) showed an elevated uric acid level (≥ 7.7mg/dl and ≥ 6.8mg/dl for males and females respectively); two of them were RF reactive. Among the ten rheumatoid factor positive individuals, elevated Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) was noticed in 9 with 5 having elevated ESR level of more than 50 mm/hr. Significant correlation has been detected between elevated serum uric acid and ESR (P value 0.046). Recommendation: It's highly recommended to screen periodically any elderly individuals (above 60 year) for serum uric acid and rheumatoid factor, which might help in early diagnosis and avoid any complication and co morbid diseases.
