Screening of Selected Bioactive Compounds from Radix isatidis for Antiviral Efficacy

This study aimed to investigate the effects of eleven chemical constituents from Radix isatidis (Indigowoad root) on the inhibition of a mouse lung-adapted variant of the influenza A1 virus (FM1) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in vitro and to identify the effective antiviral components of R. isatidis. The inhibitory effects of these chemical constituents against FM1 and RSV were measured using the methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay. Viral suppression rates were used as an evaluation index to compare the antiviral activity of the eleven chemical constituents. The results showed that the eleven chemical constituents exerted stronger inhibitory effects on FM1 as compared to RSV. Among these chemical constituents, indirubin and isovitexin had the strongest antiviral activity.

Amelioration of Carbon Tetrachloride-Induced Liver Damage in Albino Rats Using Methanolic Extract of Kydia calycina Leaves

The hepatoprotective activity of methanolic extract of Kydia calycina (Malvaceae) (KCME) at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg were evaluated by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) intoxication in rats. The toxic group which received 1 ml/kg (50% CCl4 in olive oil) per oral, alone exhibited significant increase in serum alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), alkaline phosphate (ALP) and total bilirubin (TB) levels. It also exhibited significant (P < 0.001) decrease in serum total protein (TP) and albumin (ALB) levels. The groups that received pretreatment of K. calycina leaves extract at a dose of 250 and 500 mg/kg per oral showed reduced levels of the ALT, AST, ALP and TB effects were compared with standard drug (Silymarin 50 mg/kg). The KCME 500 showed a better hepatoprotective activity (P < 0.001) than KCME 250 comparable to the reference standard drug (Silymarin). The histopathological studies indicated that the hepatic damage induced by CCl4 were remarkably reduced by the standard silymarin, KCME 250 and KCME 500, and showed a reduced fatty changes, necrosis and broad infiltration of lymphocytes produced by CCl4.

Inhibition of Early Atherogenesis by Co-Administration of Amaranthus caudatus and Hypericum perforatum Extracts

Hypercholesterolemia, a high cholesterol diet and oxidative stress increase serum low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels resulting in increased risk for development of atherosclerosis. Antioxidants play an important role in inhibiting and scavenging radicals, thus providing protection to humans against contagious and degenerative diseases. The aim of this study was to assess the anti-fatty streak effects of concurrent hydroalcoholic extracts of Amaranthus caudatus L. (A. caudatus) and Hypericum perforatum L. (H. perforatum) as this were investigated in hypercholesterolemic rabbits and was compared with lovastatin. Rabbits were randomly divided into four groups which were fed with normal diet (control), high-cholesterol diet (hypercholesterolemic control group), high-cholesterol + concurrent hydroalcoholic extracts of A. caudatus (75 mg/kg daily) and H. perforatum (75 mg/kg daily) (treatment group), and high-cholesterol + lovastatin (10 mg/kg daily) (treatment group) for 60th days and then blood samples were obtained to measure plasma cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), apolipoproteinA (apoA), apolipoproteinB (apoB), malondialdehyde (MDA), C-reactive protein (CRP), Ox-LDL and AI aorta was also obtained for histological evaluation. The observation showed decrease in plasma cholesterol, TG, HDL, LDL, apoB, CRP, MDA, OX-LDL, AI and increased apoA and HDL between treatment groups and hypercholesterolemic control groups (P>0.05). The mean size of produced fatty streak also showed significant reduction in the treatment groupIII compared to the hypercholesterolemic group (P<0.05). This results showed that combination of hydroalcoholic extracts of A. caudatus and H. perforatum has anti-fatty streak effects in hypercholesterolemic rabbits.

Evaluation of the Reproductive Endocrine and Andrological Effects of Trichilia monadelpha Extract in Male Albino Rats

A lot of anti-malarial drugs are known to have serious detrimental effects on the sperm indices in experimental animals as well as in man; although recently, some drugs have been shown to have no adverse effects on testicular functions. The dearth of information on the reproductive toxicity of Trichilia monadelpha, a potent antimalarial plant in West Africa, especially in the South Western part of Nigeria, makes this study important. The effects of the aqueous extract of T. monadelpha were studied on sperm motility, viability and counts and serum concentration of testosterone in male albino rats. Oral administration of 400 mg/kg/day of T. monadelpha stem extract was administered for 4 weeks. The control rats received the vehicle, and all treated rats had corresponding recovery groups. There was a significant increase in sperm motility and viability (P < 0.01) as well as an insignificant difference in the sperm counts (P > 0.05) and there was a decrease in the serum testosterone level at P < 0.01. The results suggested that the administration of T. monadelpha at a dose of 400 mg/kg/day that was employed in this study had no adverse effects on testicular functions in the rat.

Pain is the most common complaint in any kind of disorder. Despite its different nature, place and cause in various cases, pain is the main complaint of about half of the patients that are referred to physicians. Opiates and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, NSAIDS have been used for pain control many years ago, but these drugs also have some side effects. Regarding the complications and continuous pain in preoperative patients, some safe analgesics with better effects and little adverse effects are needed. Since many years ago in Iran, rose extract products are used in food production as jam and soft drink, and also in traditional medicine. The aim of the current research is to evaluate the effectiveness of preemptive prescription of rose extract in patients with elective cesarean sections (because of its little side effects) and compare its effects with placebo prescription. In a double blind placebo-controlled clinical trial, 92 patients had been studied in 2 equal groups. Group A were given rosehip extracts capsule and Group B were given placebo capsules. After preemptive prescription of Capsules A and B (15 min before anesthesia), the pain score was evaluated with visual analog scale (VAS) in varied hours after surgery in the ward, and then, the findings were analyzed. Analgesic drugs are needed for the palliation of post-operation pain. Total dosage of analgesics and the severity of pain in Group A at any time were lower than in Group B. There are no significant side effects in both groups. The initiation of breast feeding and its effects on newborns were same in both groups. According to our study, rosehip extract can be used in elective surgical patients without any significant side effects in order to improve pain and it is a more effective product when compared with NSAIDS and opiates.

Antioxidant Efficacy of Grape Seed Extract in Attenuating High-Dose Garlic-Induced Hematological and Plasmatic Toxicity

High dosage garlic exerts adverse health properties and grape seed extract (GSE) exhibit a variety of beneficial effects, even at high dosage. In the present study we evaluated the toxic effect of high dosage garlic treatment on blood parameters and the protective effect of GSE co-treatment. Rats were intraperitoneally injected with 5 g/kg body weight (bw) crude garlic extract during one month and co-treated or not (vehicle 10% ethanol) with GSE (500 mg/kg bw). Blood parameters were evaluated. Data confirmed that high dosage garlic induced anemia, increased MCV, reduced the MCHC, but has no effect on MCH. Garlic also has no effect on glycemia, calcemia, natremia and kaliemia. GSE co-treatment counteracted almost all garlic’s effects. High dosage garlic induced a toxic effect into erythrocytes parameters and GSE has real contradictory property.
