Evaluation of Antioxidant Activity in Origanum rotundifolium Boiss. from Turkey: Essential Oil and Various Extract

This study is designed to examine the chemical composition and in vitro antioxidant activity of the essential oil and various extracts of Origanum rotundifolium Boiss. from Turkey. The total of the 40 identified components accounted for 97.23% (GC) and 95.10% (FID) of the total oil. Major components of the oil were borneol, terpinen-4-ol, and spathulenol. To determine the presence of well known and widespread phenolic compounds, water-soluble extract of O. rotundifolium was analyzed by HPLC. In the methanol-soluble extract, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, (+)-catechin, and ferulic acid were found in several quantities. Antioxidant activity of the essential oil and extracts of O. rotundifolium has been determined by four different test systems namely DPPH, b-carotene/linoleic acid, chelating effect and reducing power. A strong correlation was observed between the radical scavenging capacity and polarity of the extracts. The methanol-soluble extract which contains the most polar phytochemicals showed the strongest antioxidant effect in all test systems. As expected, amount of the total phenolics and flavonoids was very high in methanol-soluble extract.

Bioactivity Profiling of Hydnora abyssinica A. Braun Against Diverse Microbial Groups: Fungi and Bacteria

Root samples of Hydnora abyssinica were collected from Wad Medani city, central Sudan, to examine their antimicrobial potentials. Root extracts, aqueous, methanolic and chloroform, were obtained and bioassayed in vitro for ability to inhibit growth of 6 human pathogenic fungi and 4 types of bacteria, the differences in bioactivity of aqueous, CHCL3 and MeOH extracts were analyzed. Despite extreme fluctuations in activity, the undiluted aqueous extract was the most inhibitory followed by methanolic extract, while the chloroform extract was the least effective. Growth of pathogens was inhibited by all extracts in a concentration dependent manner. Phytochemical analyses showed preponderance of condensed tannins and phenols in the plant root extracts. The results confirmed the antibacterial and antifungal activity of the roots and support the traditional use of the plant in healing bacterial infections, the possibility of therapeutic use of Sudanese H. abyssinica as antimicrobial agent is worthy of further investigations.

In Vitro Mass Propagation of Stevia rebaudiana: A Strategy for Sustainable Production of a Key Medicinal Plant

Experiments were conducted for standardization of in vitro culture technique of Stevia rebaudiana, an important non-caloric sweetening herb to explore its potential for micro-propagation and callus culture. Nodal segments of the selected herb as explants were cultured for micro-propagation on MS medium containing 0.1 mg/l N6-benzyl amino purine for shoot initiation. Maximum plantlets (83.2 ± 0.445033) were found in MS medium treated with 3.5 mg/l N6-benzyl amino purine at multiplication stage. Young leaves were placed on MS medium containing 2 mg/l 2-4- Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid +1 mg/1 Kinetin was given best result of callusing. Higher regeneration of plantlets (3.8 plantlets/calli) was obtained by placing callus on MS medium with 5 mg/l BA + 1 mg/l NA. Highest rooting average (11.1 ± 0.264052) was recorded on 1/2MS medium with 100 mg/l activated charcoal. The rooted plantlets were hardened in 1:1:1 ratio of sand: soil: vermicompost and successfully established in soil.

The Effects of Herbal-Marine Compound MS14 on Quality of Life in Multiple Sclerosis: A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Crossover Trial

Current research into new drugs is focused on agents that will change multiple sclerosis process. MS14 is an herbal-marine product, based on anecdotal evidences in traditional Iranian medicine (TIM). The objective of this study was to assess the safety and efficacy of MS14 in volunteer patients. This study was a randomized placebo -controlled, double blind, crossover clinical trial in patients who had not responded to common MS drug regimens. Common toxicity criteria and quality of life (QOL) ques-tionnaire were assessed. No significant changes were observed in vital signs, biochemical, hema-tological, liver and kidney function tests. Moreover, the improvement of patients' mobility (lower limb) was significant, comparison before treatment and placebo group (p-value: 0.048). These results suggest the potential benefits of MS14 on QOL in patients and attenuating and remodeling of multiple sclerosis disease and although the results confirm the safety and relative efficacy of MS14.

Characterization and Standardization of Niprisan: A Herbal Remedy for Sickle Cell Disease

Niprisan is a dry extract preparation of five components: the seeds of Piper guineense; flower buds of Eugenia caryophyllata; stem parts of Pterocarpus osun; leaf stalk of Sorghum bicolor and trona. The product was developed in our Institute from a traditional recipe used in Nigeria for treating sickle cell crises. This study aims to provide for the components, the following specifications: foreign matter; loss on drying; total ash; and water extractable matter, using the methods prescribed by the WHO (1998) for quality control of medicinal plant materials. The trona was analyzed with methods adapted from BP (2004). The results suggest the existence of one variety of E. caryophyllata; but two varieties of S. bicolor and trona, differing in loss on drying; and two varieties of P. guineense and P. osun, differing in both total ash and water extractable matter. The implications of the results for good manufacturing practice are discussed.

Investigating Flavonoid-Induced Glycemic and Lipid Regulation from Nelumbo Nuficera Leaves in a Diabetic Mouse Model

This study evaluated flavonoids extracted from lotus (Nelumbo nuficera Gaertn) on reducing hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia in alloxan-induced diabetic mice. flavonoids from lotus(FLL) was orally administered once a day after 3 days of alloxan -induction at 50 and 200 mg/kg for 28 day, and the results showed that fasting blood glucose ,serum TC and TG levels were significantly decreased, whereas serum HDL-c level were increased. The dosage of 200 mg/kg is more effective than that of 50 mg/kg. In addition, FLL did not exhibit any toxic symptoms in the limited toxicity evaluation in male mice. The above results suggested that FLL could control blood glucose and modulate the metabolism of glucose and blood lipid. So we conclude that the FLL should be evaluated as a candidate for future studies on diabetes mellitus.
