Phytochemical and biological investigation of Tanacetum parthenium (L.) cultivated in Egypt

Abstract
Phytochemical investigation of Tanacetum parthenium (L.) family Asteraceae cultivated in Egypt resul-ted in isolation and identification of four flavonoids isolated from the aerial part, four sesquiterpene lactones isolated from the leaves, two sterols isolated from the roots. A comparative study of the essential oil content of the leaves and the flower heads was performed using (GC/MS) revealing the presence of 42 and 30 components with the major components camphor (constituted 37.7 and 48.4%) and chrysanthenyl acetate (constituted 33.8 and 26.3%) in the leaves and the flower heads, respectively. Different extracts of T. parthenium (L.) showed significant analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antispasmodic and uterine-stimulant activities in addition to the in vitro cytotoxic effect.

Use of Jatropha gossypifolia stem latex as a haemostatic agent: how safe is it?

Abstract
The stem latex of Jatropha grossypifolia is routinely used by local and some urban dwellers in Southern Nigeria to stop bleeding from nose, gum and injured skin. Safety of its use was investigated in different groups of wistar albino rats using different doses of the latex. Different numbers of incisions were made on the thighs of different groups of animals and different doses of the stem latex applied. The procedure was repeated on daily basis for 18 days. The control group was not incised. The animals were sacrificed and the effect of the stem latex on blood biochemistry and haematology were assessed using standard techniques. There were no statistical significant differences (P>0.05) in the result of biochemical and haematological parameters obtained for the control and experimental animals. The findings of this study showed that the stem latex of Jatropha gossypifolia has no harmful effects.

Toxicity studies on an unripe Carica papaya aqueous extract: Biochemical and haematological effects in wistar albino rats

Abstract
Aqueous extract of unripe Carica papaya is consumed by some sickle cell patients for its antisickling activities in some parts of southern Nigeria without considering its safety. The effects of the extract on functions of the liver, kidney and bone marrow were investigated in 30 wistar albino rats. The rats were in 6 groups of 5 animals per group. The first group is the control and the other five groups were the study groups. The oral acute toxicity of the extract (LD50) was determined, different doses, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 mg/kg were administered daily to the study groups (A, B, C, D, E) respectively for 6 weeks. Liver, kidney and bone marrow function tests were assessed using standard techniques. The results obtained for biochemical and haematological parameters for the control and experimental groups showed no statistical significant different (P>0.05). This result showed that the intake of unripe C. papaya extract had no adverse effects on the functions of these organs in rats.

Clinical effect of chronic osteomyelitis treated by integrated Chinese-Western therapy

Abstract
Both Western and Chinese medicine have their own advantages in treating chronic osteomyelitis. In this study, we investigated the methods and clinical effect of chronic osteomyelitis treated by integrated Chinese-Western therapy. This is a prospective study. A total of 121 cases of chronic osteomyelitis (treated in the Military Training Medicine Institute hospital from January, 2002 to February, 2010) were divided into three groups, respectively treated with methods of traditional Chinese medicine, methods of Western medicine and integrated Chinese-Western therapy. All the patients were followed up and ranged from 8 to 56 months, with an average of 30 months. The total effective rate of the cases treated with methods of traditional Chinese medicine was 66.7%, cases treated with methods of western medicine was 54.8%, cases treated with integrated Chinese-Western therapy was 88.9%; the average period of hospitalization of cases treated with methods of traditional Chinese medicine was 59.3 days, cases treated with methods of western medicine was 74.6 days, cases treated with integrated Chinese-Western therapy was 43.7 days. There was a significant difference between the first two groups and the last one in terms of effective rate and average period of hospitalization. It is conspicuously effective to treat chronic osteomyelitis with integrated Chinese-Western therapy, which proved to be more powerful in improving recovery rate and reducing period of hospitalization than pure methods of traditional Chinese medicine or pure methods of Western medicine.

Abstract
This article is based on the results of a preliminary ethno-botanical research survey conducted in Makkah Al-Mukarramah area. The main objective of this paper was to enlist the wealth of crude drugs (botanical medicinal materials) available in the Attar shops (herbal drug stores) along with their folkloric uses. A total of 71 species, belonging to 40 families and 69 genera were enlisted and their therapeutic uses were also described.

Ethnozoological study of traditional medicinal animals used by the people of Kafta-Humera District, Northern Ethiopia

Abstract
Zootherapy is the healing of human ailments by using therapeutics based medicines obtained from animals. The present study reports the use of drugs of animal origin that have been practiced by the people of Kunama in Kafta-Humera district, Northern Ethiopia. Ethnozoological data was collected from 30 traditional healers who were selected based on their experience and recognition as experts from September to November, 2010. Sixteen species of medicinal animals were collected and identified for treating 18 different human ailments, of which about 44% were domestic animals. The traditional medicine were administrated orally (14, 63.6%) and dermatologically (8, 36.4%). Majority (17, 77.3%) of the remedy preparations did not have additive substances. Different parts and products of animals that were used for remedy preparations include bile, milk, blood, pancreas, urine, hair and fecal matter. The medicinal animals have various methods of preparation for different types of ailments like crushing, powdering, squeezing, direct use and cooking. Most of the traditional medicinal animal preparations were used in fresh form (16, 72.7%). Further studies concerning the conservation and management of the animal resources are needed. People of the study area should take care of their animal resources so as not cause total eradication.
