Phytochemical Profiling and Biological Activity of Tanacetum parthenium (L.) Cultivated in Egypt: Implications for Medicinal Use

Abstract
Phytochemical investigation of Tanacetum parthenium (L.) family Asteraceae cultivated in Egypt resul-ted in isolation and identification of four flavonoids isolated from the aerial part, four sesquiterpene lactones isolated from the leaves, two sterols isolated from the roots. A comparative study of the essential oil content of the leaves and the flower heads was performed using (GC/MS) revealing the presence of 42 and 30 components with the major components camphor (constituted 37.7 and 48.4%) and chrysanthenyl acetate (constituted 33.8 and 26.3%) in the leaves and the flower heads, respectively. Different extracts of T. parthenium (L.) showed significant analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antispasmodic and uterine-stimulant activities in addition to the in vitro cytotoxic effect.

Herbal Medicine Awareness Among Pharmacy Students in Pakistan: Assessing Knowledge, Usage, and Educational Gaps

Abstract
The objective of study was to evaluate the knowledge of students on herbal medicines in Pakistan. To evaluate knowledge among the students, a questionnaire based study about herbal medicines was designed. Mean age of responding students was 22 years, some of them had used herbal medicines in past and some were still using. Majority of the students were interested in the information related to herbal medicines. The response of students about herbal medicines was good. But they had a little knowledge about their adverse effects. But some of them had no idea about the interaction between herbal medicines and allopathic medicines. Herbal medicine information should take a part of pharmacy curriculum for undergraduate students. Education program should be started amongst the pharmacists about the safety of herbal medicines in Pakistan.

Assessing the Bioassay Performance of Spinosad Dust Against Storage Pests: Insights from Laboratory Trials in Kenya

Abstract
Laboratory bioassay trials were conducted at the National Agricultural Research Laboratories and Kiboko sub-centre in Kenya to determine the efficacy of spinosad dust 0.125% admixed with shelled grains, compared to a “cocktail” of pirimiphos-methyl 1.6% and permethrin 0.3% (Actellic super dust) against four important storage-insect pests: Sitophilus zeamais (Motsch), Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) and the larger grain borer, Prostephanus truncatus (Horn). Spinosad dust was applied at 0.35, 0.7 and 1.44 parts per million (ppm), and Actellic super dust at 10.5 ppm. All treatments were significantly (P=0.05) better than the control except when applied against T. castaneum. Spinosad at 0.7 and 1.44 ppm was able to control S. zeamais over the 24-week trial period. Similarly, all treatments gave good control over P. truncatus and R. dominica, with not apparent significant differences (P=0.05) between treatments on the latter. On P. truncatus, Spinosad showed better performance than Actellic super dust (P= 0.05). All levels of spinosad dust appeared to perform better on P. truncatus compared to Actellic super dust, but spinosad dust, unlike Actellic super dust, was unable to control T. castaneum. The evidence from this trial suggests that spinosad dust may have potential in controlling major storage-insect pests, with special applicability against the destructive larger grain borer, P. truncatus.

Impact of Chinese Medicinal Herbs on Neutrophil Phagocytosis and Antibody Production in Two-Month-Old Piglets Vaccinated for Classical Swine Fever

Abstract
Two-month-old piglets were fed with 1, 1.5 and 2% immune synergist of Chinese medicinal herbs together with vaccination against classic swine fever. Serum IgG and IgM levels increased more than the control group on day 30 (P<0.05). B and T lymphocyte proliferation in piglets fed with 1.5 and 2% herbal immune synergist markedly increased on day 30 as compared to the control group (P<0.05). Improvement was also observed in T lymphocyte CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ and CD3+/CD8+ levels. Meanwhile, there were significant differences in SOD activities and rate of neutrophil phagocytosis between synergist groups and the control group. These results suggest that herbal immune synergist of Chinese traditional herbs prescription enhances the protective effect of classic swine fever vaccine.
